Dan Stevens Will Be Colossal Opposite Anne Hathaway In The Arthouse Monster Movie

October 26, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dan-stevensA while ago Anne Hathaway signed up to star in the arthouse monster movie Colossal, and now she’s got some company, as Variety reports that Dan Stevens has signed up to co-star.

Since Hathaway attached herself in May, the film has had a little trouble, with Japanese Godzilla studio, Toho, suing the makers over similarities to their property (not helped by comparisons the filmmakers themselves made). However now it seems to be moving forwards.

The film will see Hathaway as Gloria, an ordinary woman who, after losing her job and her fiancé, decides to leave her life in New York to move back to her hometown. But when news reports surface that a giant lizard is destroying Seoul (which was previously Tokyo, so the makers do seem to be deliberately moving away from Godzilla), Gloria gradually comes to realize that she is strangely connected to these far-off events via the power of her mind. In order to prevent further destruction, Gloria needs to determine why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world.

Stevens will be the former boyfriend who ends up wanting her back.

Timecrimes and Open Windows director Nacho Vigalondo is set to direct the movie, which is already shooting.

October 26, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

suicide-squad-empire1There’s a lot of interest in Jared Leto’s take on the Joker, which will appear in the upcoming Suicide Squad. From images we’ve previously seen we know he looks manic and a bit scary, and now Empire has released a new cover which gives us a full figure look at Leto in character.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘An all-star roster of actors has joined new action adventure Suicide Squad, bringing DC Comics’ super villain team to the big screen under the direction of David Ayer (“Fury”).

‘The film will star two-time Oscar nominee Will Smith (“The Pursuit of Happyness,” “Ali,” “Focus”) as Deadshot; Joel Kinnaman (“Run All Night”, “Robocop”) as Rick Flagg; Margot Robbie (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Focus,” upcoming the “Tarzan” movie) as Harley Quinn; Oscar winner Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyers Club,” “Alexander”) as the Joker; Jai Courtney (“Divergent,” “The Water Diviner”) as Boomerang; and Cara Delevingne (“Anna Karenina,” upcoming “Pan”) as Enchantress.

‘Ayer is also writing the script for Suicide Squad, which is being produced by Charles Roven (“The Dark Knight” trilogy, upcoming “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”) and Richard Suckle (“American Hustle”). Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns are serving as executive producers.’

The film will be in cinemas August 2016.

Bloody Knuckles (US DVD/VoD Review)

October 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

Starring: Adam Boys, Kasey Ryne Mazak, Ken Tsui
Director: Matt O.
Running Time: 85 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: October 27th 2015 (US)

Travis (Adam Boys) is a comic book writer who’s made his name with his no holds barred creations, where no topic is off limits and he doesn’t kowtow to those who feel you shouldn’t cause offense. That includes his most popular character, a gay S&M superhero vigilante, called Homo Dynamous.

Local crime-lord/businessman Leonard Fong is one person who doesn’t like Travis’ comics, which have specifically targeted him, and decides the artist needs to be taught a lesson – having his right hand cut off. However, the hand isn’t going to take that lying down and comes back to life as a five-fingered avenging angel – something it has trouble getting the now depressed Travis to understand and help out with.

And when things get dangerous, a man who takes his Homo Dynamous cosplay extremely seriously may also be around to aid them. [Read more…]

Pasolini (Blu-ray Review)

October 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Willem Dafoe, Riccardo Scamarcio, Ninetto Davoli
Director: Abel Ferrara
Running Time: 84 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: October 26th 2015 (UK)

Abel Ferrara’s movie about director Pier Paolo Pasolini’s final day in 1975 has been described as ‘non-linear’, ‘cubist’ and ‘kaleidoscopic’, which should be a good hint that this is not a straightforward, simple movie. This is a movie for those who enjoy their films on the artier side and don’t mind something that asks them to piece things together to create a moment in someone’s life. It also helps if you know a little bit about Pasolini before you watch it.

Pasolini was a true artistic polymath, distinguishing himself as a poet, writer, film director, political figure and cultural philosopher. His leftist politics made him a controversial figure to some, although many couldn’t see past the ‘shocking’ elements of his work – but as Pasolini puts it, “To scandalise is a right, to be scandalised is a pleasure”. Mr. Holmes (DVD Review)

October 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ian McKellen, Laura Linney, Milo Parker, Hiroyuki Sanada
Director: Bill Condon
Running Time: 104 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: October 26th 2015 (UK)

You’d be forgiven for thinking that a movie about an aging Sherlock Holmes would be about the famed detective back on the case solving a murder and recapturing his glory days, but Mr. Holmes is something slightly different.

Holmes (Ian McKellen) is in his 90s, living in a remote cottage after leaving his illustrious career behind 35 years before. His main company is his cook/housekeeper, Mrs. Munro (Laura Linney), her son Roger (Milo Parker) and the bees that he keeps. He’s not trying to recapture his glory days, he just wants to be able to properly remember them, as creeping senility keeps making him to forget things, including what really happened on his final case.

He knows that the ending to the tale isn’t what Watson wrote in his successful books about Sherlock, but he’s having trouble remembering exactly what it was that led him to leave his former life behind. [Read more…]
