A Sinner In Mecca Trailer – A gay Muslim risks everything to film his Hajj

May 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sinner-in-mecca-slideEvery year millions of Muslims from around the world travel to Saudi Arabia to complete the Hajj in Mecca, a pligrimage seen as a religious duty which every follower of Islam should complete at least once (if they are capable). However, what if you are gay and wish to go on the Hajj, even though the fact homosexuality is illegal in Saudi, and many Muslims believe being gay is one of the worst sins there is?

It’s something Parvez Sharma had to face, and he decided to film his journey, something made far more difficult not just because you can still be executed for homosexuality in Saudi Arabia, but also because filming in Mecca is banned. While he filmed on iPhones and other small cameras to try to go under the radar, he still had equipment seized and footage deleted, although thankfully the fact he was gay did manage to slip by the authorities.

The documentary he made, A Sinner in Mecca, premiered last week as the Hot Docs Festival in Toronto, and a trailer for the film has been released too.

The Indian-born director told CBS News, “The Hajj is the highest calling for any Muslim. For years I felt I really needed to go, so this film is about me coming out as a Muslim. I’m done coming out as a gay man.”

A Sinner In Mecca has already met with condemnation in some places, including Iranian state media denouncing the documentary as a ‘Western conspiracy’, which is designed to legitimise the ‘despicable sin of homosexuality’.

Tangerine Trailer – The LGBT-themed Sundance sensation has a night out

May 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tangerine-film-slideOne of the big hits of this year’s Sundance was Tangerine, which initially ignited interest due to the fact the whole thing was shot in iPhones, but then had people gushing with praise for its actual content.

It’ll arrive in US cinemas on July 10th, and ahead of that comes a red-band trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘It’s Christmas Eve in Tinseltown and Sin-Dee (newcomer Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) is back on the block. Upon hearing that her pimp boyfriend (James Ransone, STARLET, “Generation Kill”) hasn’t been faithful during the 28 days she was locked up, the working girl and her best friend, Alexandra (newcomer Mya Taylor), embark on a mission to get to the bottom of the scandalous rumor. Their rip-roaring odyssey leads them through various subcultures of Los Angeles, including an Armenian family dealing with their own repercussions of infidelity. Director Sean Baker’s prior films (STARLET, PRINCE OF BROADWAY) brought rich texture and intimate detail to worlds seldom seen on film. TANGERINE follows suit, bursting off the screen with energy and style. A decidedly modern Christmas tale told on the streets of L.A., TANGERINE defies expectation at every turn.’

Saugatuck Cures Trailer – Take a look at the gay-themed film starring Glee’s Max Adler

May 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Saugatuck-Cures-slideIn Glee Max Adler played Dave Karosky, the homophobic bully who tormented Kurt but then turned out to be hiding the fact he was gay himself.

Now Max is back in gay-themed territory for Saugatuck Cures.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Saugatuck Cures, a family-friendly comedy, about a widowed bed and breakfast owner, Maggie Callaghan (played by Judith Chapman), living in Saugatuck, Michigan dealing with a second round of cancer. When she can’t afford treatment, Maggie’s gay son Drew (played by Glee’s Max Adler) becomes determined to raise money for her treatment, yet doesn’t have the slightest idea of how to do it. After a falling out with his affluent sister, Penelope, a religious conservative, Drew is convinced by his eccentric, best friend Brett (played by Danny Mooney), who is straight, to pose as ex-gay ministers in order to raise the money by “converting” homosexuals into heterosexuals! The two friends set forth on a crazy adventure, getting into a lot of trouble with the law, family conflicts and not knowing if they will have enough time to save mom.’

The film will be released on DVD and VOD in the US on June 30th, 2015. [Read more…]

Channing Tatum Enlists In An All-Gay World For The Forever War

May 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Channing-TatumA bidding war broke out last week in Hollywood for the sci-fi movie Forever, which has Channing Tatum attached to star. THR reports that Warner Bros. won out and has snapped up the package, which is based on Joe Haldeman’s 1974 sci-fi war novel.

Prometheus and Passengers screenwriter Jon Spaihts will write the script, about ‘a young man conscripted into a military task force during a war against an alien species named the Taurans. Through many battles, the man rises up the ranks of the military, but traveling through space has time-warping effects, causing him to age normally while Earth spins centuries.

‘The planet undergoes many changes, including humanity’s melding into one homogenous race, the eliminating of heterosexuality and the speaking of a new language. At the same time, the man tries to remain connected to his true love, a fellow (and female) soldier who also uses space-time to slow down her aging so she can be with him.’

Presumably the original book’s tendency to equate totalitarianism with homosexuality will be toned down, and may instead become an interesting role-reversal study, with straight people treated as gay people have been by society, allowing the movie to highlight those issues.

There’s no news on when it might shoot or who’s directing.

Brokeback Mountain Writers Reuniting For New Gay-Themed Drama

April 30, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Larry-McMurtry-and-Diana-Ossana10 years ago Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana won an Oscar for their script for Brokeback Mountain. Interestingly despite that success it’s the last feature writing credit for either of them (they’ve been attached to numerous projects but nothing that’s made it to the screen).

However now they’re reuniting and going back into the arena of gay-themed drama, according to Indiewire, with True Detective’s Cary Fukunaga set to direct.

The film doesn’t have a title yet, but it is ‘Based on the true story of Joe and his son Jadin Bell, a 15-year-old Oregon teen who killed himself in 2013 after suffering vicious bullying for being gay, the drama will be penned by the Oscar-winning “Brokeback Mountain” team of Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana. After Jadin committed suicide, his father set out across America to promote awareness and to rally against prejudice and bullying.’

It certainly sounds like a provocative and potentially moving story and hopefully Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana can do it justice.

The film is the first that distributor A24 is developing itself, although there’s no news on when it might arrive in cinemas.

Legend Teaser Trailer – Tom Hardy plays both Kray Twins in the upcoming movie

April 30, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

legend-tom-hardy-slideNope, Tom Hardy isn’t starring in a remake of the 1985 Ridley Scott fantasy, as this is something rather different. Instead he’s playing both Reggie and Ronnie Kray, which must have been an interesting acting challenge for considering he’s both of the main characters.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Academy Award® winner Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential, Mystic River) comes the true story of the rise and fall of London’s most notorious gangsters, Reggie and Ron Kray, both portrayed by Tom Hardy in an incredible performance. LEGEND is a classic crime thriller taking us into the secret history of the 1960s and the extraordinary events that secured the infamy of the Kray Twins.’

What’s not really hinted at in the teaser is that Reggie Kray was bisexual (while some say he exclusively slept with men, he identified as bisexual). He is believed to have been quite open about this even at the height of his gangster exploits. However it’s not clear how the film will handle this.

Emily Browning (Sucker Punch), David Thewlis (The Theory of Everything, The Harry Potter series), Christopher Eccleston (Thor: The Dark World) and Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service) also star. Legend is released in cinemas across the UK on September 11th. [Read more…]

Fifty Shades Darker Teaser – Our first look at Jamie Dornan in the sequel?

April 30, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fifty-shades-darker-movieI’m not 100% convinced by this, but numerous sources are suggesting it’s legit and so we’re posting it!

One of the reasons for being suspicious is that Fifty Shades Darker doesn’t have a director yet, and the February 2017 release date was only announced a few days ago. However after Universal had a huge hit with Fifty Shades Of Grey it’s not too surprising they quickly want to say that more will be coming.

Apparently when it does, it will be pitched as a thriller, according to the Universal top brass. It will further follow the kinky adventures of Jamie Dornan’s Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson’s Anastasia Steele. [Read more…]

Furious 7’s James Wan Wanted For Robotech Adaptation

April 30, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

james-wanJames Wan has had massive success in horror with Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring, but it’s Furious 7 that’s made Hollywood sit up and take notice that this is a guy that can handle a big, tentpole movie. Recently rumours emerged that he’s in contention to direct Aquaman and now Deadline reports that he’s in talks to hRobotech.

Sony Pictures is behind the long-gestating anime adaptation, which is envisioned as a sprawling sci-fi epic. The original animated series takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific island.

Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship’s energy source known as “protoculture,” and the planet’s survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.

The likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire have previously been involved in the film, but it doesn’t appear any actors are currently attached.
