Backstreet Boys: Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of (Cinema Review)

February 26, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, A.J. McLean, Kevin Richardson
Director: Stephen Kijak
Running Time: 101 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: February 26th 2015

Well done making me feel old Backstreet Boys. It was recently their 20th anniversary, which makes me feel ancient, as I can remember when they were the new kids on the block (who were constantly compared to the New Kids Of The Block). This documentary was made as part of the celebration of that milestone, as well as to chronicle a new page in the Boys’ book, with the return of Kevin Richardson to the group, along with a new album and tour.

It’s the sort of documentary project that could have been far too laudatory and vain for its own good, but it turns out Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of is much more interesting than that. The film mixes showing us what is happening with the boys as they record their new album – including some major bust-ups and Brian having massive issues with his voice – with the history of the band. Gay Short Film Showcase: Bromance – Homoerotic male friendship gets explored through dance

February 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bromance-short-filmIf you put the words ‘modern’ and ‘dance’ together a lot of people immediately roll their eyes. Perhaps this video will change your mind though.

It’s a celebration of the Bromance, with three guys showing the bonds that can grow between men, and doing it through the medium of dance.

You’ll be pleased to hear that they don’t shy away from the homoerotic edge that can come with these friendships, whether it’s acknowledged or not, along with the a strong feeling of how these peoples’ lives are bound together.

It may not be ‘gay’ exactly, but it’s as close as you can’t get without saying ‘no homo’.

You can take a look at Bertil Nilsson’s sexy short film below.

First Look At Ben Whishaw As A Gay Man Drawn Into A Secret World In London Spy

February 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ben-whishaw-london-spyBen Whishaw is getting involved in a lot of espionage this year, as he’s reprising his role as Q in the James Bond movie Spectre, and he’s also heading to TV for the five-part series London Spy, based on a script by Child 44’s Tom Rob Smith.

Now the first image from the series has arrived, courtesy of Empire, showing Whishaw in front the Palace Of Westminster. The show may feature quite a few iconic locations, as a few weeks ago I personally came across Ben filming the show in the Victorian confines of Paddington Station.

In London Spy, Whishaw is Danny, an outgoing and pleasure-seeking romantic who becomes embroiled in the world of British espionage after falling for the enigmatic Alex (Wolf Hall’s Edward Holcroft). However, when Alex disappears, Danny must decide whether he is prepared to find out what has happened to him.

The series will debut in the UK on BBC Two later this year.

Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man Gets An Avengers: Age Of Ultron Banner

February 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

avengers-age-of-ultron-iron-man-bannerAfter yesterday’s full Avengers: Age Of Ultron posters, it’s time for one of the characters to get their own poster – and it’s not too surprising that first up is Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man/Tony Stark, who’s looking as cool as you might expect – even if he is responsible for creating the movie’s villain.

Here’s the movie’s short synopsis: ‘When Tony Stark jumpstarts a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as they battle to save the planet from destruction at the hands of the villainous Ultron.’

It stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Cobie Smulders, Stellan Skarsgård with James Spader and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

Avengers: Age Of Ultron reaches the UK on April 23rd 2015 (and a week later in the US).

Eastenders’ Ben Hardy Joins X-Men: Apocalypse

February 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

eastenders-calendar-ben-hardy-slideIt seems the people behind X-Men: Apocalypse really wanted young British actor Ben Hardy in the movie. He was in contention to play Cyclops (which went to Tye Sheridan), and the Eastenders actor was also considered to play Angel, but he didn’t get that either.

However now it’s been revealed that he will be in the movie after all, although it’s not clear which character he will play. The role is described as being a key Marvel character, so let the speculation as to who it will be begin.

He joins the likes of Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult in the movie, who will be going up against Oscar Isaac’s Apocalypse, an ancient mutant with extraordinary powers that dwarf those of most others. It will be set in the 1980s.

The film is due out May 2016. Whatever character he’s playing, let’s hoping Ben spends all of the movie looking like he does below. (Source: The Wrap) [Read more…]

Jessica Chastain Set To Join Chris Hemsworth In Huntsman

February 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jessica-chastainIt’s taking a long time to get the follow-up to Snow White & The Huntsman ready for the big screen but it finally seems to be coming together.

Chris Hemsworth is still around – indeed he’s at the centre as the movie is just called Huntsman – and now Deadline reports that Emily Blunt has finalised her deal to play the villain, and that Jessica Chastain is now in talks for the film, although it’s not clear what her role will be.

Last month it appeared Nick Frost wouldn’t be back after being unable to come to terms with Universal, but now it seems he’ll return after all.

Unfortunately we don’t have too many details about what the film will be about, but we do know Cedric Nicolas-Troyan is directing from a screenplay that’s been worked on by the likes of Frank Darabont, Craig Mazin and Evan Spiliotopoulos. An April 2016 release date has been set.

Gay Short Film Showcase: 100m Freestyle – A man deals with his feelings for his straight best friend

February 24, 2015 By Tim Isaac 3 Comments

100m-freestyle-short-film100m Freestyle is a great little film about a subject many gay men will know well – trying to deal with your feelings for someone you know is almost certainly straight and won’t feel the same way you do.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Polo and Domingo spend their last days together between Ciudad Mendoza and Cordoba, in Veracruz, Mexico, before Domingo moves to another city. Domingo has to say goodbye to his girlfriend, Mina; while Polo deals with his feelings towards his best friend in the little time they have left.’

You can watch the full film below. It’s sweet and well worth sticking with.

McTucky Fried High – Episode 3 – A genderqueer peanut isn’t allowed a school photo

February 24, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mctucky-fried-high-ep3We’re loving the web series McTucky Fried High, which takes a smart look at teen issues, sexuality and gender politics, and does it all with animated food. In the first episode a football playing box of french fries came out, while in the second an eggplant is bullied because of her weight.

Now the third episode has been released, which ‘tackles gender identity and expression when Peanut, a genderqueer student, is rejected from taking school photos.’

McTucky Fried High is the brainchild of filmmaker, illustrator and activist, Robert-Carnilius, who was named one of NewCity’s Film 50 and was a 2014 Student Academy Awards Finalist. It is also one of twelve projects funded by the Chicago Digital Media Production Fund from Chicago Filmmakers and the Voqal Fund.

Using comedy and a host of diverse characters, McTucky Fried High tackles subjects absent in mainstream cartoons. While foregrounding LGBTQ characters, it focuses on issues teens face. Across five episodes, the web series explores coming out, extreme diets, being genderqueer, bullying, and sexting. [Read more…]

New Avengers: Age Of Ultron Poster Unites Heroes Old & new

February 24, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

avengers-age-of-ultron-poster2Believe it or not but it’s now less than two months until Avengers: Age Of Ultron on April 23rd 2015 (and a week later in the US). As a result it’s time for the official poster which brings together an awsul lot of heroes, including Hawkeye, Black Widow, Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and newcomers Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.

It looks cool if a little and rather generic, especially with Vision and loads of robots flying around in the background.

Here’s the short synopsis: ‘When Tony Stark jumpstarts a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as they battle to save the planet from destruction at the hands of the villainous Ultron.’
