Wild Trailer – Reese Witherspoon is going hiking

July 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

reese-witherspoon-wild-slideReese Witherspoon is returning soon with Wild, based on Cheryl Strayed’s bestselling novel, with a script from top author Nick Hornby (About A Boy, High Fidelity). Now the trailer for the movie has arrived, which you can see below.

The movie is about how Strayed hiked 1,000 miles alone on the Pacific Crest Trail following years of destructive behaviour in the wake of the dissolution of her marriage and her mother’s death. The synopsis says the movie ‘powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddens, strengthens, and ultimately heals her.’

Jean-Marc Vallée (Young Victoria, Dallas Buyers Club) directs, with a late 2014 release planned. [Read more…]

Gary Oldman Is Set To Get Criminal With Kevin Costner

July 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gary-oldman-robocopIt seems there’s not going to be too much fallout from Gary Oldman defending the homophobic and racist rants of fellow celebs, as thanks to him quickly calling himself an ‘asshole’ for doing so, all seems to be forgiven. It’s certainly not stopped him booking new roles.

A few weeks ago Kevin Costner signed up for the thriller Criminal, and now he’s got some company as Gary Oldman has signed up to co-star, according to THR.

The movie is about a ruthless killer who chooses to take part in a scientific experiment instead of spending the rest of his life in jail. He gets implanted with the brain of a recently-murdered CIA field operative in the hope that he will stop a diabolical plot.

Oldman will play the head of the CIA.

Ariel Vromen (The Iceman) will direct from a script by Douglas Cook and David Weisberg

Laverne Cox Makes History As The First Transgender Emmy Nominee Ever

July 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

laverne-cox-oitnbThe rise of Orange Is The New Black’s Laverne Cox continues with the actress scoring a Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series Emmy nomination, which marks the first time a transgender person has ever been so honoured.

Cox’s nomination is just one of 12 the show received, with the series’ actresses dominating the comedy categories. Alongside Laverne in the Guest Actress list are Natasha Lyonne and Uzo Aduba, Kate Mulgrew is up for Best Supporting Actress and Taylor Schilling will compete for Best Actress In A Comedy Series.

It was a good year for LGBT-themed entertainment, as along with Orange Is The New Black’s noms, The Normal Heart scored major attention for its actors, as Mark Ruffalo is up for Best Actor In A Miniseries Or Movie, while in the Best Supporting Actor category it scored an incredible four of the five noms for Alfred Molina, Jim Parson, Joe Mantello and Matt Bomer. Julia Roberts also got a look in on the Supporting Actress list.

Indeed, looking through the list of Emmy nominees the vast majority of shows included in the list include gay content, from Modern Family and Game Of Thrones, to Masters Of Sex and Downton Abbey.

However, while it’s been an incredible year for Laverne Cox, topped by her Emmy nomination and being featured on the cover of Time, the actress has been talking recently about how her rise to success has come with a dark side – as more public exposure has resulted in increased attacks on her on the internet. While it has often been noted that social media has allowed transgender people to start controlling their own public stories for the first time, the flipside is that it means the entire world can answer back, and many people are both cruel and almost stunningly bigoted.

In an emotional interview with BET, Cox says, “I’ve felt it since the cover of TIME Magazine, like all of a sudden like my Twitter feed and my Instagram there’s all this negativity. I was getting Google Alerts about me [somehow being in league] with Satan.”

July 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hunger-games-mockingjay-snow-portraitA couple of weeks ago President Snow, ruler of The Hunger Games’ Panem gave us an address from The Capitol, as he knew that following the events of Catching Fire, there is dissent in the Districts and if it isn’t stamped out, the whole country could collapse.

Now he is back with a call for Unity, once more showing off his iron fist in a velvet glove skills.

We can also enjoy the new ‘official portrait’ above, which I’m sure we’d all love to hang on our walls. As you can see, it also features Peeta Mellark and Johanna Mason, who I’m sure were both their of their own free will.

Zach Galifianakis is already attached to star, but he now likely to get some impressive company, as TheWrap reports that Jon Hamm, Kevin Hart, Danny McBride, Sarah Silverman, Josh Gad, Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele are all in talks for the movie.

First Look at Ian McKellen As An Aging Sherlock Holmes In Mr. Holmes

July 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mr-holmes-pic1It was arguably 1998’s Gods & Monsters that turned Ian McKellen from a well-loved British stage actor into a movie star (with his Oscar nomination for the movie certainly helping). Now he’s reteaming with the director of that movie, Bill Condon, for Mr. Holmes, about Sherlock Homes when he’s in his 90s.

Now the social media savvy McKellen has shared the first image from the film via Twitter, which you can see above, along with the message, ‘Over 70 actors have previously played Sherlock Holmes. Now he’s 93 years old and it’s my turn.’

When McKellen signed up for the film last September it was called A Slight Trick of the Mind. However now it’s Mr. Holmes and he’ll play a retired Sherlock Holmes, who in 1947 is retired and lives in a sleepy Sussex village with his housekeeper and her amateur-sleuthing son. But far from living out a peaceful retirement, he is haunted by an unsolved case from 50 years ago. He remembers only fragments: a confrontation with an angry husband, a secret bond with his beautiful but unstable wife.

With his legendary mental powers on the wane, and without his old sidekick Watson, Holmes is faced with the toughest case of his life – a case that might finally reveal to him the mysteries of the human heart.

Jeffrey Hatcher (The Duchess) wrote the screenplay adaptation, based on Mitch Cullin’s novel. It’ll be in cinemas next year.

Guillermo Del Toro Will Make A Black & White Creature Feature Before Pacific Rim 2

July 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

guillermo-del-toroIn the last few months Guillermo Del Toro has been talking up Pacific Rim 2 and his plans for the movie, but it turns out before we get that film, he plans to direct another movie beforehand.

Pacific Rim 2 already has an August 2017 release, but Del Toro is hoping to slot in his other movie with an early 2015 shoot planned. It will be rather smaller that his giant robot film though, including bring made in black and white.

Del Toro has been talking to Collider about the film, saying, “Right away, in February/March I should [start on] another very small movie, black and white, really, really bizarre before starting – we start pre-production on Pacific Rim 2 in August, and then I interrupt it briefly to go into the first of next year to do this strange little movie, and then I restart it and go all the way until we start shooting Pacific Rim 2 at the end of 2015 for release in 2017.”

He wouldn’t reveal anything about the plot, but he did say, “It’s a very small cast. I would love to have John Hurt, and there’s an actress that I have in mind that is not well-known but I’ve seen her in a short film. That’s all she’s really done, one feature and one short, but she has an incredibly interesting taste and I’m gonna try her out for the main role.”

He then added when pressed for more details, “There’s one great creature in it. It does [have a title], but I find – I’d rather do the projects and then show them to people than talk about them. I think that it’s going to be a nice thing for people to know which one is it and where it came from when it’s a reality.”
