BFI London Lesbian And Gay Film Festival 2013 Programme Announced

February 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

llgff13-artworkThe 27th BFI London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival is coming soon – it’s on from March 14th-24th. Now the full programme for the event has been revealed, including the strands Hearts, Bodies and Minds, along with a few gala screenings and an extensive shorts programme.

As previously announced, the festival will open with I Am Divine, a documentary about drag performer Divine, who’s famed for her appearances in early John Waters movies. LLGFF will close with the Canadian drama Margarita, about the complicated love life of an attractive young Mexican, lesbian nanny, who has to battle against deportations. It’s now been revealed there’ll also be a centrepiece gala of Out In The Dark, a love story from Israel that is set against a backdrop of political conflict.

The emotionally minded Hearts strand of the festival includes Korean director Leesong Hee-il’s new trilogy of queer films, with a double bill of the relatively short Going South and Suddenly Last Summer and the longer White Night. There’s also the Cannes Critics’ Week prize winning Beyond The Walls, as well as I Do, which was written and produced by former Bad Boys Inc. boyband member, David Ross.

The more confrontational Bodies segment includes James Franco’s meta-movie collaboration with Travis Mathews, Interior Leather Bar, which is about the recreation of lost gay S&M scenes from the 1980 movie Cruising. Bodies also has a focus on images of transgender and intersex lives, including the documentary Intersexion, which attempts to demystify intersex people, and Mr. Angel, about porn star Buck Angel, the self-styled ‘man with a pussy’. Another movie that looks interesting is I Am A Woman Now, about the first generation of trans ladies.

The Minds section aims to be a bit more cerebral, including the Oscar nominated AIDS documentary How To Survive A Plague and Les Invisibles, which follows the lives of 11 LGBT people who are over the age of 70. Minds also features a look at queer director Pier Paolo Pasolini, including a documentary on him, a panel discussion and a screening of 120 Days OF Sodom.

There’s an awful lot of interesting stuff going on at the festival – with plenty of performances and other queer art alongside the movies. If you want to know more, you can flick through a digital edition of the LLGFF programme by clicking here. Priority booking for BFI members opens at 11:30am on Tuesday February 16th, while general public booking starts at 11:30am on Monday March 4th.

Apropos Of Nothing: Andrew Christian Gets Saucy With A NSFW Field Trip

February 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

andre-christian-field-trip
Underwear company Andrew Christian are well known for their sexy, homoerotic videos, and it’s been noticeable that they’ve been getting more daring as time goes on. Their latest, Field Trip, is almost undoubtedly their sauciest yet, with a fair few glimpses of full frontal nudity.

In amongst that is plenty more sexiness as the AC boy get on a bus (just wearing their undies, naturally) and trawl around town picking up more sexy young things as they go.

It is pretty not safe for work, so if you decide to watch, make sure your boss isn’t looking over your shoulder (or alternately make sure he is if you really fancy him and want to make a move). [Read more…]

Star Trek Into Darkness Motion Poster & Featurette Arrive

February 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Star Trek has excited fans by releasing not just a rather cool motion poster (which is embedded at the bottom of this post), but also a first look featurette. There’s a fair bit of new footage in the latter, although it’s more about saying how awesome it’s going to be and how they’ve upped the ante than giving us any specifics.

Here’s the previously released synopsis: ‘In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

‘With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.’

The film hits cinemas May 17th, 2013. [Read more…]

The first huge movie of the year is on its way, with Sam Raimi’s Oz The Great And Powerful hitting UK cinemas on March 8th. However we’ve teamed up with Disney to give you the chance to see the movie more than a week early, at a special 3D preview screening on February 27th in central London.

Please note travel is not included, so if you enter you’ll need to be free to get to the middle of London for 6.30pm on Feb 27th.

Disney’s fantastical adventure Oz The Great and Powerful, directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

Quote Of The Day: Daniel Radcliffe On Being Asked About Playing Gay

February 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

daniel-radcliffe-out-magazine-cover

“You never see a gay actor getting asked what it’s like to play straight — to my knowledge, at least, there is no difference in how heterosexual and homosexual people fall in love.”

Daniel Radcliffe talks to Out Magazine about the constant questions about playing gay in his upcoming movie, Kill Your Darlings. It’s an interesting article, covering everything from how he looks at his Harry Potter says to how he’d be happy to die on a film set at 80.

We were also pleased that while director John Korkidas’ quote in the article that Radcliffe is “He’s only British from the waist up,” first seemed like an insult to the size of the UK men’s downstairs departments, he’s actually referring to Daniel’s Jewish heritage.

Monsters University Trailer – Mike and Sulley become rivals at college

February 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mike and Sulley are back in Monsters University, although a bit younger than they were in Monsters Inc., as the new movie will follow them back in their university days, when they developed a bit of a rivalry – both want to be scarers, but while Mike is serious and studious, Sulley is a bit more freewheeling.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a Scarer—and he knows better than anyone that the best scarers come from Monsters University (MU). But during his first semester at MU, Mike’s plans are derailed when he crosses paths with hotshot James P. Sullivan, “Sulley” (voice of John Goodman), a natural-born Scarer. The pair’s out-of-control competitive spirit gets them both kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program. To make matters worse, they realize they will have to work together, along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters, if they ever hope to make things right.

‘Screaming with laughter and oozing with heart, Disney•Pixar’s “Monsters University” is directed by Dan Scanlon (“Cars,” “Mater and the Ghostlight,” “Tracy”), produced by Kori Rae (“Up,” “The Incredibles,” “Monsters, Inc.”) and features music from future Rock-and-Roll-Hall-of-Fame–inductee and award winning composer Randy Newman (“Monsters, Inc.,” “Toy Story 3”). The film opens in UK. cinemas on July 12, 2013, and will be shown in Disney Digital 3D™ in select cinemas.’

New Jack The Giant Slayer Trailer & Clip – Nicholas Hoult gets his fantasy action on

February 12, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It seems Warner Bros has listened to those who thought the first Jack The Giant Slayer trailer made the whole thing look like a dumb, not particularly funny comedy, as this new promo brings on the rock music, ups the action and puts everything in fantasy peril.

I’m still not 100% convinced by the movie, but director Bryan Singer is normally trustworthy, so hopefully it’ll work out well.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘An ancient war is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack (Nicholas Hoult), into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom and its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend… and gets the chance to become a legend himself.’

Take a look at the new trailer above and a clip below. The film’s out March 22nd.

One Direction 3D Movie Teaser – The boys are coming to cinemas

February 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

One Direction have taken over the world, not just finding success in Europe but becoming a number one sensation in the US and all across the globe. As a result they’re getting their own 3D film, which from this new trailer looks like it’s going to be a mix of concert footage and behind-the-scenes chats with the boy.

Don’t expect a tell-all expose though, as this is going to be how much they love one another (which certainly seems true, as they simply can’t stop touching each other!).

The film is due to hit cinemas August 30th, when you’ll be able sing along with the boys in 3D.

Joshua Tree, 1951: A Portrait Of James Dean UK Trailer – How queer was the legend?

February 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

James Dean’s sexuality has always been a matter of intense speculation. For everyone who’s come forward to say he was exclusively gay (and if Paul Alexander’s book Boulevard Of Broken Dreams is to be believed, a major masochist) there’s another who insists he was completely straight. One person says his relationship with Pier Angeli was real and her heartbreak eventually led to her suicide, while others says she was purely a beard and well aware of that fact.

We’re unlikely to ever known the full truth of whether Dean was gay, straight or bisexual, but the film Joshua Tree, 1951: A Portrait Of James Dean delves into the murky waters of the legend’s sexuality and speculates on the truth.

A May 13th UK DVD release has now been set and a trailer released, which you can see above.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Directed by Matthew Mishory and starring James Preston & Dan Glenn JOSHUA TREE 1951 follows James Dean (the handsome James Preston) on his first steps to becoming the international icon of youth and rebellion. The film is a series of revealing and sometimes dreamlike vignettes that blend autobiographical and fictionalised elements to present a pivotal moment in a remarkable life.

‘We follow Jimmy Dean during two periods of his life prior to becoming the international star that we all know today. In 1949, he joins UCLA as an acting major, a decision which ultimately estranged him from his father. Whilst there he wrestles with the mental and sexual constraints and boundaries of society and while demonstrating great acting skills he rebels against the system he finds himself within. Whilst in California he also starts to experiment with his sexuality, and finds solace in the beds of both men and women.

‘The film’s ‘present tense’ is in 1951, as Dean drives to the desert of Joshua Tree, California. Along for the ride is The Roommate (Dan Glenn), a struggling actor who lived and loved with Dean whilst at college. The friendship and intimacy he provides gives Dean a sense of security before embarking on his own path. Matthew Mishory presents his first feature; a brutal and honest exploration of Dean’s complicated sexuality and formative relationships; JOSHUA TREE, 1951 redefines the boy behind the image for a new generation.’joshua-tree-1951

Hitchcock (Cinema)

February 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Danny Huston, Toni Collette, James D'Arcy, Scarlett Johansson
Director: Sasha Gervasi
Running Time: 98 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: February 8th 2013

Anthony Hopkins gave some amazing performances in the 1980s and 1990s, but for the last decade or so it’s seemed like he’s simply turned up for his paycheque. However it turns that to get him to give a real performance you’ve got to give him a role where he doesn’t have much choice but to act. After all, Alfred Hitchcock is far too well known for Hopkins just to have coasted it. Thankfully he doesn’t, not just doing a dead-on impersonations of the master director, but creating a fully realised character in a way Toby Jones couldn’t quite manage in the recent, The Girl.
