New York Is Dead: Episode 1 – Gayby’s Matthew Wilkas & Jenn Harris reunite, with Randy Harrison directing

April 27, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For the past year or so, Matthew Wilkas has mainly been seen being obscenely cute (and hot) alongside his fiance, Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy. Now he’s reunited with his Gaybe co-star and real-life bestie, Jenn Harris, for the new web series New York Is Dead.

They’ve also got a bit of famous help behind the camera, as Queer As Folk US’s Randy Harrison directs, and also pops up for a cameo. There’s also time for an appearance from Bebe Neuwirth.

The show itself is, ‘a new comedy web series about Felix and Cathy (Wilkas and Harris), two down on their luck New York City Artists, who become hired killers to make ends meet’.

New York is Dead – which is planning six episodes for its first season – premiered last week at the Tribeca Film Festival. You can watch the pilot episode below. [Read more…]

Ewan McGregor Will Be Grown-Up Christopher Robin In Winnie the Pooh Sequel

April 27, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As well as live-action movies based on their feature-length animated classics, Disney has been working on a live-action Winnie The Pooh movie. Now that film has found its Christopher Robin, with THR reporting that Ewan McGregor is in talks to star.

As you may have guessed, this is planned as a movie about Chrisopher Robin as an adult, having left the hundred-acre wood behind many years before. He is now an adult who ‘has lost his sense of imagination and is a businessman focused on work and success.’ As you might expect, things begin to change when Winnie, Piglet and co. come back into his life.

Marc Forster (World War Z, Finding Neverland) is set to direct, with Disney having just brought in Hidden Figures’ Allison Schroeder to rewrite the script. It’s not known yet when we might get to see the movie.

Star Wars Boss Kathleen Kennedy Isn’t Ruling Out A Romance Between Poe & Finn

April 27, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When The Force Awakens was released, more than a few people noticed that John Boyega’s Finn and Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron seemed to like each other a lot, to the point where many wondered if the film was suggesting some sort of romance between them. It even got the point where the actors were joking about it and you couldn’t tell if they thought their characters might have a romantic future together or not.

However, it turns out it’s not just fans who’ve been wondering whether the duo might end up as an item, because so have those in charge of the franchise as Lucasfilm. Kathleen Kennedy, who runs the company, was asked about the possibility of Poe and Finn properly falling in love.

She replied, “We’ve talked about it, but I think you’re not going to see it in The Last Jedi.”

Of course, that doesn’t mean we’ll see it in any of the other movies either, but it’s nice to know they’re taking it seriously as a possibility. And from what Kennedy said next, it appears they’d never thought about Finn and Poe having a romantic connection until fans pointed it out.

She says, “In the next six or eight months we will have some meetings about the stories that we will develop next. After 40 years of adventures, people have a lot of information and a lot of theories about the path these stories can take, and sometimes those theories that come up are new ideas for us to listen to, read and pay attention to.”

Although some may think this is a form of queerbaiting, hopefully it means Kennedy and others are taking the idea of LGBT characters in the Star Wars universe seriously, and whether it’s Poe and Finn or not, that they will arrive in the movies soon. (H/T GSN)

Is One Of The Guardians Of The Galaxy Gay? The Director Says ‘Maybe’

April 26, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been a bit of consternation in the last week after it initially looked like Marvel was bringing a couple of LGBT characters into its film universe when scenes from Black Panther were screened that suggested two of the women were interested in one another, only for them to reveal that no, they’re not.

However, there’s an outside chance that the Marvel universe already has a gay character, but we just don’t know it yet.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn was asked about bringing a gay character into the franchise. He replied, “Absolutely. I would love to be able to. We might have already done that. I say watch the movie. Check it out. See what you think.”

When asked to clarify what he meant – as those who’ve Vol. 2 have suggested there’s little to suggest any of the characters are LGBT, Digital Spy reports Gunn saying, “What I meant to say is this: There are a lot of gay people in the world. There are a lot of bisexual people in the world. There are a lot of characters in the MCU. We’ve barely gotten to know the sexuality of any of those characters. We know Gamora and Quill are interested in each other. That’s about the only sexual relationship that exists within the Guardians. We know Drax has a past with a wife so he’s got some sort of interest in women. But we don’t really know who’s gay and who’s not. It could be any of them.”

This could just be Gunn speculating or inviting people to interpret what’s going on – e.g. was the relationship between Rocket Raccoon and Groot in the first film not purely friends? – or whether he has plans for the third movie he’s just officially signed on to write and direct. We will have to wait and see.

Ang Lee’s Clone Thriller Gemini Man Is Courting Will Smith

April 26, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ang Lee’s last film, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, didn’t get the same critical reaction as many of his earlier movie. For his next movie, he’s in talks to go in a rather different direction and a genre he’s never really touched before – sci-fi. But then, Lee has always liked to try new things, as his back catalogue has ranged from historical drama and war films, to tragic romances and rom-coms.

Recently it was revealed Ang is in negotiation to helm Gemini Man, and now THR adds that Will Smith may be the man who’ll star in the movie.

Gemini Man itself has a long history, as it’s been around since 1997, when Disney bought the original pitch from Darren Lemke. Since then it’s been through numerous hands and incarnations. The latest is Skydance Pictures, which is hoping that bringing Lee and Smith onboard will finally help get the movie made.

The film itself ‘centers on an aging assassin who finds himself in a battle with the ultimate opponent: his clone, who is 25 years younger and at the peak of his abilities.’ It’s not known when we might see the movie.

Billy Eichner & Seth Rogen Will Be Live-Action Lion King’s Timon & Pumbaa

April 26, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jon Favreau is busy putting together the voice cast for his live-action take on The Lion King, and he’s just found the men he want to be Simba’s warthog and meerkat pals, Timon and Pumbaa. TheWrap reports that Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen will take on the roles.

They join Donald Glover as Simba, with James Earl Jones returning to play his father, Mufasa. It rumoured that the makers want Beyonce to play Simba’s mother Nala, but that’s yet to be confirmed.

In the 1994 animated movie, Timon and Pumbaa were voiced by Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella. Although Billy Of The Street’s Eichner and Bad Neighbours’ Rogen seem somewhat different to those two on the surface, they do have a similar energy and could be a lot of fun in the roles.

What’s not known yet is whether the movie will follow Beauty and the Beast’s reinvention of the animated movie as a full-on musical, or whether it will remove most (if not all) of the tunes, like Favreau’s Jungle Book. You have to hope that at the very least, we get to hear Eichner and Rogen’s take on Hakuna Matata.

It’s expected that the movie will shoot this year, although no release date is currently set.

Jeff Goldblum Is Returning To The Dinosaurs For Jurassic World 2

April 26, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When Jurassic World rebooted the Jurassic Park franchise, the only original character we saw was Richard Attenborough’s John Hammond, and even then only in statue form. However, for the follow-up, Ian Malcolm will be back and once more in the form of Jeff Goldblum, according to THR.

It’s not known what role he will play in the movie, but it’s safe to say he’ll be back in know-it-all form, and probably once more suggesting the plans for the dinosaurs aren’t going to work out. However, having survived the first two movies, he’ll likely be a handy person to have around.

Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will be back for Jurassic World 2, and they’ll be joined by Justice Smith, James Cromwell and Toby Jones. J.A. Bayona (A Monster Calls) is directing, with a June 2018 release date set.

Daddyhunt: Season 2, Part 1 – Intergenerational gay love isn’t always easy in returning web series

April 24, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of day ago we posted the trailer for the second season of Daddyhunt, which teased the return of  BJ Gruber and Jim Newman’s cute couple. As the title suggests, it’s a bit of a May/December romance, brought to us courtesy of the Daddyhunt app, which caters for younger guys looking for older and vice versa.

While the first season of Daddyhunt concentrated on the couple meeting and potentially getting together, Season 2 looks at some of the issues that intergenerational love can encounter. You can watch the first part of the new season of the show below.

And just in case you’re interested, Daddyhunt itself was launched by Christopher Turner, who later became the husband of acclaimed gay author Armistead Maupin. It doesn’t appear he’s involved anymore, but it seems the app/dating site is still interested in the world of gay-themed stories. [Read more…]
