Robert Downey Jr. Set To Star In The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle

March 21, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Robert Downey Jr. is set to follow in Rex Harrison’s footsteps by playing Doctor Dolittle, although it doesn’t look like it’ll be a musical this time. THR reports that Downey Jr. is planning to star in The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, with Universal backing the movie.

Stephen Gaghan, best known for writing and directing more serious fare such as Syriana and Gold, in onboard to helm the film. Gaghan is also writing the script, based on an earlier version by Tom Shepherd.

The will be based around Hugh Lofting’s famous children’s character, a doctor who tires of treating animals and learns to speak to animals. Although there’s no news on the exact story for this new version, it looks like the Doctor will be going off on a big trip.

It was previously made into the Rex Harrison starring musical in 1960, while Eddie Murphy played a very different version of the character in 1998.

After a long a tortuous road to the screen, Hollywood is hoping for big things from the adaptation of Stephen King’s Dark Tower series of novels. With a July release set, it’s almost surprising we haven’t seen more about it by now, but a poster has been revealed to give us a glimpse of this world.

Different For Girls (BFI Flare Web Series Review) – The lesbian housewives of London?

March 18, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Caroline Whitney Smith, Guinevere Turner, Rachel Shelley, Tuyen Do, Victoria Broom
Director: Campbell X
Running Time: 57 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: March 18th 2017

The new web series Different For Girls received its World Premiere at the BFI Flare London LGBT Film Festival last night, before going online worldwide from March 18th. It’s an attempt to fill the void left by the lack of lesbian TV programming, with a show that looks like it could/should have been on a traditional television channel, but made – by necessity – on a much smaller budget. Nevertheless, they’ve pulled together a good cast, including Guinevere Turner (Go Fish, The Watermelon Woman,), Caroline Whitney Smith (Her Story), and Rachel Shelley (The L Word).

The five episodes of Season 1 introduce us to the slightly soap opera lives of a group of women in London’s Chiswick district. There’s Gemma, who’s dating Jude, but who’s also getting married to a guy – to satisfy her parents and his acting career. Jude though hasn’t really cut ties with her ex, Nicola, which isn’t making things easier with Gemma. Nicola is supposed to have moved on and has a wife, Brooke, and kids. Even so, Nicola has a hard time committing to this supposed domestic bliss, and if having an affair on the side. Brooke may not know that, but she does know her partner is neglecting her home life. Beauty & The Beast (IMAX Review) – Is there something gay there that wasn’t there before?

March 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Dan Stevens, Emma Watson, Josh Gad, Kevin Kline, Luke Evans
Director: Bill Condon
Running Time: 129 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: March 17th 2017 (UK)

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. That seems to have been the watchword with Beauty & The Beast. While there has been some tinkering around the edges of the 1991 animated classic to give everyone a bit more of a backstory, and to slightly soften some of the creepier Stockholm Syndrome elements, largely this live-action version is incredibly faithful. That goes as far as parts of the film being pretty much a shot-for-shot remake.

Inevitably, this will have some crying foul, seeing this as a cynical attempt by Disney to churn out another money-grabbing live-action take on one of their best films. Well, the fact is – yes, it is. But do you know what? I don’t care. [Read more…]

Multiple Maniacs (Criterion Blu-ray Review) – John Waters’ insane early queer movie is back & as bizarre as ever

March 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: David Lochary, Divine, Mink Stole
Director: John Waters
Running Time: 94 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: March 20th 2017 (UK)

Even 47 years on, it’s sometimes difficult to know what to write about John Water’s early work. While he later tempered some of his more depraved urges and found a wider audience with the likes of Hairspray, Serial Mom and Pecker – although all still with the unique Waters stamp – when he first started out he was blazing a trail unlike anyone else.

Multiple Maniacs was Waters’ first feature-length sound movie, made in Baltimore at the tail end of 1969 with a cast and crew composed largely of his friends. It opens with Mr. David (David Lochary) trying to entice people into a tent to see Lady Divine’s Cavalcade Of Perversions. The straight-laced punters aren’t impressed by the ‘real-life queers’, drug addicts, armpit lickers and naked pyramids they find in the tent, and are even less pleased when they discover it’s all been a ruse to kidnap, rob and possibly kill them. Coco Teaser Trailer – Pixar’s latest takes us into the Land of the Dead!

March 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Pixar has taken us to some unexpected places over the years. Now that includes a trip to the Land of the Dead, in Coco. While The Book Of Life played with similar themes, this appears to be a uniquely Pixar take on things.

Henry Cavill Signs Up For Mission: Impossible 6

March 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mission: Impossible 6 just got a little less impossible. After all, if you’ve got a man who can fly, stop speeding bullets and have x-ray vision on your team, it makes things easier. That said, although Variety reports that Henry Cavill has signed on to star, he probably won’t be playing Superman.

Instead, he will apparently be ‘would play some sort of a right hand to the head of Cruise’s unit’. Alec Baldwin had the head role in the last film, but its not been announced whether he will return. It also leaves open the possibility that Cavill may actually turn out to be a bad guy.

Vanessa Kirby was recently announced as one of Tom Cruise’s co-stars in the movie, with the likes of Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, and Jeremy Renner also expected to return in some capacity. The movie is due to start shooting soon, for release July 2018.

Early Man Teaser Trailer – Aardman’s Nick Park takes us back to stop motion caveman times

March 16, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Nick Park is the man who helped put Aardman on the map with his Oscar winning Wallace & Gromit Shorts, Creature Comforts (another Oscar winner) and Chicken Run. However, his painstaking stop motion approach means it takes a long time for him to finish a film. His last directorial effort was the Wallace & Gromit short A Matter Of Loaf & Death, back in 2008.

Now though, he’s returning with Early Man.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘EARLY MAN is the new prehistoric comedy adventure from four-time Academy Award-winning director Nick Park and AARDMAN, the creators of WALLACE AND GROMIT and SHAUN THE SHEEP. Shot in Aardman’s own distinctive style, the film will take audiences on an extraordinary journey into an exciting new world unleashing an unforgettable tribe of unique and funny new characters voiced by an all-star British cast.

‘Set at the dawn of time, when prehistoric creatures roamed the earth, EARLY MAN tells the story of courageous caveman hero Dug (EDDIE REDMAYNE) and his best friend Hognob as they unite his tribe against a mighty enemy Lord Nooth (TOM HIDDLESTON) and his Bronze Age City to save their home.’

Jane Lynch Is Set To Go Womanising In NBC’s New TV Pilot, Relatively Happy

March 16, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jane Lynch has been brilliant for years, but people only really started properly paying attention after Glee. Since that show ended, TV has been looking for the right spot for her, and now NBC is hoping they’ve found it, as Variety reports she’s been cast in the pilot for the new comedy, Relatively Happy.

It’s a bit of gender-blind casting – sort of – as the role was originally written for a man, before the producers (including Will & Grace’s Max Mutchnick) decided it would be perfect for Lynch. Thankfully though, it doesn’t appear they’re changing much, as that just as when the character was a guy, she’ll be a bit of a womaniser.

The show ‘follows adult siblings Henry (John Rudnitsky) and Heather (Genevieve Angelson) who wind up living together for the first time since they were kids, after one of them suffers a big loss. They become each other’s wingman, shoulder to cry on, best friend and punching bag as they navigate love, loss and work while helping to get each other “un-stuck.”’

Lynch will play ‘Bobbi Martin, a fast-living, Scotch-drinking, three-piece-suit–wearing, womanizing divorce attorney who is Henry’s boss, mentor and “father” figure’.

Sitcom directing legend James Burrows will helm the pilot, with the show angling to premiere this autumn.
