Mad Max: Fury Road (Blu-ray Review)

October 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Keays-Byrne
Director: George Miller
Running Time: 120 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 5th 2015 (UK)

I think it’s fair to say that a lot of people thought Mad Max: Fury Road was cursed to fail. Some didn’t think it should have been made at all, as they were worried it would sully the name of the originally Mel Gibson trilogy. However, George Miller wanted to make it, but it took years to get all the pieces together and Warner to give it the greenlight. Then, when it was finally ready to shoot, a massive storm blew most of the set away.

That cause a year long delay and a move to a different country. After it was eventually filmed, it took more than two years to get it into cinemas, with some wondering whether that due to the whole thing being a giant mess. However, when it finally arrived a lot of people had to admit they’d misjudged the film, as it’s a really good action movie that certainly deserves to have the Mad Max name. [Read more…]

London Road (DVD Review)

October 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Olivia Colman, Tom Hardy, Anita Dobson, Paul Thornley, Kate Fleetwood
Director: Rufus Norris
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 5th 2015 (UK)

It’s difficult not to look at London Road and think that it ought to have been a disaster. For a start, a musical about a fairly recent serial killer case sounds tacky and a little bit tasteless. Likewise, having a musical where all the lyrics are taken from real-life interviews, using the original genuine speech-patterns, sounds like the sort of thing that might be nice as an artistic exercise, but not anything that could create good songs that people would be interested in hearing.

However, when London Road reached the National Theatre stage in London, critics had to eat their words and admit it was really good. Whether it would survive a jump to film was another matter, as while it worked within the inherent theatrical artifice of the stage, bringing it out into the ‘real world’ is something rather different. Back To The Future 30th Anniversary Trilogy (Blu-ray Review)

October 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Thomas F. Wilson, Crispin Glover
Director: Robert Zemeckis
Running Time: 342 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: October 5th 2015 (UK)

Every year the internet gets excited after someone photoshops an image from Back To The Future to suggest we’ve finally reached the date that Marty, Doc Brown and Jennifer go to when they travel into the future in Back To The Future Part II. However, it’s always been a hoax – until now, that is!

Yep, October 21st, 2015 is the date that fans have been waiting for, even if we’ve had to come to accept that flying cars, hover boards, self-lacing shoes and food rehydrators aren’t the commonplace items the movie suggested they would be.

It’s not too surprising then that a DVD and Blu-ray re-release has been put together to celebrate both 30 years since the original movie and the fact we’ve very nearly reached the future (as well as 60 years since the 1955 parts of the trilogy). [Read more…]

Apropos Of Nothing: A Hot String Quartet Go Lumbersexual & Take On The Devil Goes Down To Georgia

October 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

well-strung-slideThe Devil Goes Down To Georgia is one of the greatest songs ever written (don’t argue with me, it is), but also one that’s not the easiest to do a cover version of.

That didn’t put off classical string quartet Well-Strung, who’ve released the track along with a video that gives off oddly homoerotic vibes – it certainly gives new meaning to the idea of two guys having a fiddle with one another.

The cover doesn’t completely follow the Charlie Daniels Band’s original, as it throw in a little Bach to keep the classical fans happy. But hey, it also throws in four hot guys who appear to spend a decent amount of time in the gym, so there’s something for everyone.

You can take a look at Well-Strung’s take on the classic track below. [Read more…]

no-string-attached-ep1Levi Michaels got a massive following of devoted fans thanks to his gay porn work – and we’re not surprised as he’s one hot specimen, who manages to be sweet on screen while also being gorgeous and seemingly really into the sex.

However he’s not just about getting boned for our viewing pleasure, as he’s actually a pretty smart cookie, who, as Rustin Charles, has gained plenty of new fans on Youtube. Now he’s turn travel documentarian for a web series that follows him around the world, starting in Bogota with the video below. The rest of the series will see him heading to the likes of Peru, Spain, Italy, Vietnam and more, alongside best friend Joe and cameraman, Anthony.

Of the crowdfunded series, Rustin told NewNowNext, “It was the most insane, challenging, fun, fulfilling project I’ve ever worked on… When I travel I can’t view everything as foreign or strange, because when I’m there, I’m the only thing that’s foreign. Dressed As A Girl Trailer – Taking a look at London’s alternative East End LGBT drag scene

October 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dressed-as-a-girl-slideDressed As A Girl is a documentary that probably won’t be welcomed by those who think LGBT people should be as close to staid, normal, boring straight people as people, as it follows a group of people whose gender expression and sexuality don’t fit into boxes. Indeed some seem almost militant in their expression, while others are getting older and wish they could hang up te heels – but they need the money.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘London’s alternative East End drag phenomenon gets its moment in this fabulous account of six years in the lives of its most celebrated performers. See Jonny Woo, John Sizzle, Holestar, Scottee, Amber, Pia and Ma Butcher dazzle, surprise and outrage audiences with their antics on-stage and behind the scenes.

‘There is enough eye make-up and sequins on display to sink a battleship, but at the heart of this surprisingly intimate portrait is the dark side of their lives. The relentless quest for glamorous originality often comes at a personal cost.

‘The film is both a record of a fascinating style of hyper-costumed performance and an insight into the fragile personal lives of these artists. This is truly the frockumentary of the year. Directed by Colin Rothbart and produced by Chris Amos.’

The film is in UK cinemas now and will arrive on DVD and On-Demand Dec 7th. [Read more…]

iris-prize-2015-montageThe nights are starting to get longer and summer is finally fading away, which means it’s time to head to Cardiff for the 9th annual Iris Prize film festival. Running from October 7th until the awards ceremony on October 10th, Iris showcases 30 of the very best LGBT short films from around the world.

All of the short films featured at The Iris Prize this year are competing to win the world’s largest LGBT short film prize of £30,000 in funding to make their next movie in the UK, as well as support and guidance from the filmmaking community.

Films from 18 countries have made it to the final 30 including an entry for the first time from the Czech Republic joining work from Canada, Germany, Brazil, Israel, Norway, The Netherlands, Ireland, India, Australia, US, Portugal, New Zealand, Mexico, Chile, Denmark, and the UK. The US once again secures the largest number of films in competition with an impressive 8 out of the final 30 with Denmark in second place with three films. GLAAD Announces It’s Expanding Its LGBT Advocacy Operations To The UK

October 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

glaad-media-awardsGLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) has long been one of the highest-profile LGBT advocacy groups in the the US, thanks to its work challenging the US entertainment industry to be more inclusive and less reliant on derogatory stereotypes. However, its work has largely been confined to the States. That’s changing though, as GLAAD has announced that it’s expanding to the UK.

The organisation has announced that it is setting up ‘a UK operation as part of its growing global work to accelerate acceptance of the LGBT community. GLAAD UK officially launches this month and will be part of a series of announcements made at the group’s first-ever international board meeting, taking place at the House of Lords in central London. The two-day board meeting will see celebrities joining activists and politicians to discuss how to best address global LGBT issues.

‘Having gained considerable investment from underwriters, including brands like Google and the Louis L. Borick Foundation, GLAAD will devote more than $1million to its international programme and from 1st October will set up its new UK operation with one full-time member of staff solely devoted to LGBT global issues.’

GLAAD’s annual Spirit Day campaign, now in its sixth year, is also expanding internationally, with special initiatives for London planned to take place on 15th October, when the world will “go purple” in a stand against bullying and in support of LGBT youth. The day of awareness has previously seen celebrities, corporations, schools, and U.S. landmarks, including the White House, Times Square, and the Empire State Building turn purple in support of LGBT youth.

Anthony Watson, member of GLAAD’s Board of Directors, comments: “This is a timely and vital step forward to bring GLAAD’s critical work to the international community in a meaningful and powerful way. As a British Citizen, I am deeply proud GLAAD choose the United Kingdom to base our international operations. From London GLAAD will be able to help promote positive portrayals of LGBT people in the media – not only across the UK, but across Europe and further afield. I’m excited for GLAAD to partner with local organisations, media networks & companies and governments in supporting the international LGBT community.”

CEO and president of GLAAD, Sarah Kate Ellis continues: “For 30 years, GLAAD has worked to reshape the way Americans think about LGBT people, building understanding through visibility and increasing acceptance across the nation. Now, as LGBT people around the world continue to face great injustice, GLAAD is expanding its global footprint to support the tremendous work of LGBT activists across the globe. Together, we will accelerate acceptance for LGBT people everywhere.”

While some will welcome GLAAD as a new voice shouting for LGBT equality internationally, there will also be some eyeing its motivations warily, as the organisation has seen some controversy in the US. That includes accusations that its glitzy award shows and reliance on money from Hollywood and large corporations could be a conflict of interest (including those who feel that GLAAD has been knowingly used by high profile homophobes looking for public rehabilitation). There are also those who believe the organisation has become increasingly intolerant of those who don’t fit its particular mold of what LGBT should be like, particularly trans* people who don’t try to slot themselves neatly into the traditional gender binary after they transition. Some also worry whether GLAAD acts like its the appointed representative of all LGBT people, whether its positions genuinely represent them or not.

But while there is some disquiet at some of GLAAD’s actions, there’s no doubt that over the years it has been effective at raising LGBT issues in both political and entertainment circles, and that its campaign have put sustained pressure on the film and TV industry to improve the representation of LGBT people in US media. Whether GLAAD plans to do the same in the UK and other countries – and whether it will have as much success doing so – is yet to be seen.

First Pic From Bridget Jones’s Baby Arrives – Renee Zellweger Is Back!

October 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bridget-jones-baby-pic1While there’s certainly not the buzz that there was when the first Bridget Jones movie went into production, the character is heading back to cinemas soon in Bridget Jones’ Baby, and to show us that Renee Zellweger is indeed back on set, the first image has been released.

It doesn’t exactly show us much, but it’s still out first look.

Not much is known about the film’s plot, although it is known that – unsurprisingly considering the title – it will see Bridget getting unexpectedly pregnant. We’re presuming she’s be older but probably not that much wiser.

Colin Firth will also be back, although there’s no Hugh Grant this time around. Patrick Dempsey also recently joined the cast.

Taika Waititi In Talks To Helm Thor: Ragnarok

October 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

taiki-waititiWith the Marvel universe ever-expanding, the company is on a seemingly never-ending search for the right talent to put the movies together. Now they may have found one of the pieces for Thor: Ragnarok, as TheWrap reports that Taika Waititi is in talks to direct.

Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer was also apparently in contention, but Marvel decided to go for Waititi, who’s best know for indie fare such as Eagle vs Shark, Boy, What We Do in the Shadows, as well as being part of the team behind Flight of the Conchords.. It’s interesting that both men are known for being able to handle both comedy and drama, which may give a hint at Ragnarok’s tone.

Assuming be sign on Waititi will be calling the shots on set next year, with Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston and Jaimie Alexander all known to be returning. It’ll be in cinemas July 2017.
