Josh Gad Joins Disney’s Live-Action Beauty and the Beast

March 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

josh-gadWhile Disney’s live-action fairytale films over the past few years have essentially been riffs on the studio’s classic animated movies, the more we hear about the planned Beauty and the Beast live-action flick, the closer it sounds to the wonderful 1991 film.

Now we have more evidence of that, as THR reports that Josh Gad is set to play Lefou, a character created for the animated movie, who is the sycophantic sidekick of the arrogant Gaston (who will be played by Luke Evans). It also adds to the still unconfirmed idea that this will use the Oscar-winning songs too, as Gad found huge success in The Book Of Mormon on Broadway and as singing snowman Olaf in Disney’s Frozen.

Emma Watson is the Beauty ad Dan Stevens is the Beast is the movie, which Bill Condon is set to direct. No release date has been set, but it’s expected to shoot this summer.

Star Wars: Rogue One Coming December 2016, With Felicity Jones Confirmed To Star

March 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

felicity-jonesFor several months now we’ve known that Gareth Edwards was attached to direct the first of Disney/Lucasfilm’s planned Star Wars spin-offs from their upcoming Episodes VII-IX, and more recently it’s been revealed that Felicity Jones was in talks for the female lead.

Now we’ve got a title, a release date and Jones has been confirmed to star. The movie will be called Star Wars: Rogue One, and it will hit cinemas December 16th, 2016.

There’s still limited info about what the movie will actually be about, although the press release says, “The idea for the story of Rogue One came from John Knoll, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic. He will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War Of The Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (Band Of Brothers, The Pacific) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce. The film starts shooting this summer in London.”

Although there is speculation that it will be about Rogue Squadron, which was formed shortly after the Battle Of Yavin, that hasn’t been confirmed.

It was also revealed that Star Wars Episode VIII will come out on May 26, 2017, with Rian Johnson (Looper) set to both write and direct. Incidentally that date is exactly 40 years after the first Star Wars movie came out.

First Look At Charlie Hunnam As King Arthur In Guy Ritchie’s Knights Of The Roundtable

March 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

knight-of-the-roundtable-set-photo1-slideFor several years an endless array of King Arthur movies have been in development but got cancelled before they made it in front of the cameras. Now one has passed that milestone as Guy Ritchie’s Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur is on set and to prove it, the director tweeted a pic of him ready for the shoot alongside his Arthur, Charlie Hunnam.

The film is the start of an ambitious franchise which, if it works out, will include at least six films, each concentrating on a different member of the Round Table.

We now have a few more details on the first film, with the official synopsis reading, ‘The bold new story introduces a streetwise young Arthur who runs the back alleys of Londonium with his gang, unaware of the life he was born for until he grasps hold of the sword Excalibur—and with it, his future. Instantly challenged by the power of Excalibur, Arthur is forced to make some hard choices. Throwing in with the Resistance and a mysterious young woman named Guinevere, he must learn to master the sword, face down his demons and unite the people to defeat the tyrant Vortigern, who stole his crown and murdered his parents, and become King.’

Alongside Hunnam are Astrid Bergès-Frisbey as Guinevere; Jude Law as villainous Vortigern; Eric Bana as Arthur’s dad Uther Pendragon; Djimon Hounsou as Resistance leader Bedivere; and Aidan Gillen as Goosefat Bill. The movie is due out July 22, 2016. [Read more…]

Miles Teller Up For Life and Times of the Stopwatch Gang, With Ruben Fleischer Directing

March 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

miles-tellerMiles Teller got a lot of kudos opposite Oscar-winner JK Simmons in Whiplash and this summer he’s making a bid for superhero status as Reed Richard (aka Mr. Fantastic) in Fantastic Four. He’s certainly going places, including, according to TheWrap, a movie called The Life and Times of the Stopwatch Gang.

Universal has snapped up the rights to Josh Dean’s Atavist article, with Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) set to direct.

The true life tale if about a notorious and in some circles revered band of three 1980s bank robbers, with Atavist saying, ‘They were in and out in less than two minutes—that’s how they got away with millions. And for the duration of their reign, no bank robbers were more feared (though they never fired their guns) nor more pursued or more mythologized than the Stopwatch Gang. The members themselves were straight out of central casting: Lionel Wright, a meticulous introvert who could disappear in a room full of people; Paddy Mitchell, a charming and well-connected crook who saw an angle in everything and would go to any lengths to avoid the hell of being locked away; and Stephen Reid, a fearless point man who could find the weakness in any system and whose story—of addiction and descent into crime, of redemption and literary fame—was all prelude to a tragic but life-saving fall from grace.’

It’s not known who Teller will play, but it will presumably be one of the robbers. It’s not clear when it will shoot.

Elizabeth Banks To Play Billie Jean King In HBO’s Battle Of The Sexes Biopic

March 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

elizabeth-banksFollowing the success of the 2013 documentary Battle Of The Sexes there was a lot of interest in turning that story into a feature film. At one point Danny Boyle was planning to turn the tale of Billie Jean King’s infamous match against misogynist Bobby Riggs into a movie, and shortly after that Will Ferrell signed up to play Riggs in a rival flick.

Neither of those films came to pass, but now HBO has stepped up to the plate to get a film about the match made, and they’ve got a great cast to help, as Variety reports that Elizabeth Banks will play King, with Paul Giamatti as Riggs.

The film will be set in the early 70s, when former male World Number 1 tennis played and self-proclaimed chauvinist Bobby Riggs’ declared that the female game was inferior and that a top woman player couldn’t beat him even at the age of 55. He then challenged the already legendary female player Billie Jean King to a match, but she declined.

However Margaret Court, who was then the top female player in the world, took on the challenge, but lost to Bobby in straight sets, seemingly confirming Riggs’ claims. King wasn’t going to stand for that and agreed to play Bobby in what became a nationally televised media sensation.

It was an important time in King’s life for another reason too, as for the first time she’d relatively recently become involved in a relationship with a woman, even though she was still married to a man at the time.

It’s not known if the HBO movie will cover that aspect of King’s life or if it will just stick to the tennis. David Auburn (Proof) is set to write, although it doesn’t appear a director is attached as yet.

Ben Foster Will Get Villainous In Dan Brown Adaptation Inferno

March 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ben-fosterEver since he was a very young actor, Ben Foster has been on the edge of stardom, getting plenty of kudos but never quite breaking through into being the kind of guy who can lead a movie in his own right. He is good though, which is presumably why THR reports Ron Howard has cast him in Inferno.

It’s Howard’s third adaptation of one of Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon novels following The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons. In Inferno, symbologist Robert Langdon once more get thrust into the heart of a mystery, this time revolving around medieval poet Dante Alghieri.

However to make things a little more complicated Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia. He has no idea what’s going on but it soon becomes clear it has something to do with a global plague, as well as artefacts to do with Dante – and he may be the only one who can stop it (and if that sounds like James Bond with a university professor, it kind of is).

Foster will be a villain lined up to stop Brown from figuring out what’s going on.

Felicity Jones, Omar Sy, Irrfan Khan and Sidse Babett Knudsen also star, with shooting due to kick off fairly soon.

New Inside Out Trailer – Take a fresh look into Pixar’s mind movie

March 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Inside-Out-pic2-slidePixar always likes to try something different with its original movies, whether it’s the oddness of Up or the culinary idiosyncrasies of Ratatouille. Inside Out continues that, although from what we’ve seen so far it may be one of their more inspired ideas.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From an adventurous balloon ride above the clouds to a monster-filled metropolis, Academy Award®-winning director Pete Docter (“Monsters, Inc.,” “Up”) has taken audiences to unique and imaginative places. In Disney•Pixar’s original movie “ Inside Out,” he will take us to the most extraordinary location of all—inside the mind.

‘Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.’

It’ll be in US cinemas in June and the UK in July, 2015. [Read more…]

New San Andreas Trailer – Plus a poster for the Dwayne Johnson disaster movie

March 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

san-andreas-posterNot content with the motor mayhem of Fast & Furious 7, Dwayne Johnson has decided he wants to destroy the entire West Coast of America this year! Well, okay, nature (and a whole lot of CGI) will be doing the destroying, but Dwayne is along for the rise.

And to prove this will be as over the top as any modern disaster flick is bound to be, a new trailer and poster has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘After the infamous San Andreas Fault finally gives, triggering a magnitude 9 earthquake in California, a search and rescue helicopter pilot (Dwayne Johnson) and his estranged wife make their way together from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save their only daughter.

‘But their treacherous journey north is only the beginning. And when they think the worst may be over…it’s just getting started.

‘The action thriller “San Andreas,” from New Line Cinema and Village Roadshow Pictures, reunites Dwayne Johnson with director Brad Peyton and producer Beau Flynn, following their collaboration on the global hit “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.”

‘The film also stars Carla Gugino (“Night at the Museum,” TV’s “Entourage”), Alexandra Daddario (“Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters,” TV’s “True Detective”), Ioan Gruffudd (“Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer”), Archie Panjabi (TV’s “The Good Wife”), Hugo Johnstone-Burt (Australian TV’s “Home and Away”), Art Parkinson (TV’s “Game of Thrones”) and Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti (“Cinderella Man”).’

It’ll be in cinemas this summer. [Read more…]

Tim Burton To Direct Disney’s Live-Action Dumbo

March 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dumbo-slideSome would suggest that it’s Tim Burton’s fault we’ve been deluged in the last couple of years with live-action versions of fairytales, due to the billion dollar success of Alice In Wonderland. Now he’s heading back into that arena, as THR reports he’s due to direct Disney’s planned live-action Dumbo movie.

Ehren Kruger is writing the script, which is believed to expand the story of the original 1941 animated movie (that film is relatively simple and only 64 minutes long). Walt Disney Pictures president of production Sean Bailey suggests the film offers “a big world,” with THR adding that the movie “will add a unique family story that parallels Dumbo’s journey.”

Even with Burton on board, a live-action/CG mix Dumbo still seems like an odd idea, but if anyone can find a way to make it work it’s Burton, especially as his often gothic style has had a bit of a circus vibe.

It’s still not known when we might see the movie though.

Eastenders’ Sam Strike Joins Texas Chainsaw Prequel, Leatherface

March 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sam-StrikeA couple of days ago there was buzz that Eastenders actor Sam Strike was going to be the new Spider-man. Many were sceptical, not least because Strike and his management were buzzing about ‘major news’ and a ‘big Hollywood’ film. Studios normally insist on total silence about huge casting news, so it seemed unlikely Sam was talking about Spidey (indeed he could have lost the role for having a big mouth).

Now we know what it is, and it’s far less exciting but still a big move for the young British actor. TheWrap reports that he’ll play the title role in Leatherface, a prequel to Texas Chainsaw Massacre with Strike taking us through the story of how a young man became the creepy machinery wielding maniac of Tobe Hooper’s movie (although it will presumably follow a different story to 2006’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning).

It’s not quite swinging through New York in a superhero suit, is it?

Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo will direct.

Strike caused minor controversy when he announced he was leaving Eastenders after playing character Johnny Carter for less than a year. While it was denied, some suggested he was leaving because his character was gay and he was worried about being typecast. However it now seems just as like that it was because Hollywood’s finger was beckoning, as it was was co-star Ben Hardy, who recently joined X-Men: Apocalypse.

Channing Tatum Will Lead A Ghosbusters Flick As The Spook Hunters Get An Extended Universe

March 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Channing-TatumSequels have been king in Hollywood for a long time, but that’s not enough for the studios anymore, as seeing the success Marvel has had they all want Extended Universes. So far we’ve only really seen it in the world of superhero flicks, but now Sony has revealed that they think they can do it for Ghostbusters too.

Considering getting a third film off the ground has taken years, announcing advanced plans for other films a surprise to many, but just a month after they revealed a female-led Ghostbusters movie starring Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, Deadline reports Channing Tatum is attached to a more male-focussed Ghostbusters film, with the Russo Brothers (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) set to direct.

Sony are keen to keep a link to the original movies, as they’ve set up a new division of their company, Ghost Corps, which will be led by Dan Aykroyd and Ivan Reitman and will oversee the expansion of the Ghostbusters world.

Reitman says, “We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment. This is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy. Paul Feig’s film [with McCarthy & Wiig] will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July, 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew [Peirce] will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.”

It’s been known that Tatum has been interested for a while, but it had never been clear whether the idea of him joining the Ghostbusters universe would come to fruition. Now it appears it will.
