The Always Wonderful Ian McKellen Helps A Man Propose To His Boyfriend

ian-mckellen-proposalIt seems to be universally agreed that Ian McKellen is a lovely man, but he’s also a very busy guy. Even so, the X-Men star has taken time out to help Brett Lotriet Best propose to his boyfriend Khalid Shawwa.

It’s particularly good of the actor, as it would appear from the video that in an ideal world they’d have liked Patrick Stewart, due to Khalid’s love of all things Star Trek and Captain Picard. However Stewart’s best buddy McKellen was more than happy to step in to explain that Patrick won’t be available to marry the couple, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t get get wed.

Mexican Actor Luis Gerardo Mendez Comes Out (Or At Least His Gender Usage Does)

luis-gerardo-mendezFor English-speaking people, the idea that everything needs to have a gender in many other languages can seem odd. Many a young person has been baffled when learning French as to why a table is feminine but a sofa in masculine (and also why French people care).

While not quite the same, it appears Mexican actor Luis Gerardo Mendez has come out as gay, but we can only tell because he used a word that’s two letters different if you like boys to if you like girls.

According to NewNowNext, while chatting in a recent interview with Moi magazine, Mendez talked about his problems with fidelity, saying “If the agreement is that you can sleep with anybody, there are no problems, but if it’s not, it’s not cool. I was not faithful to many, I struggled a lot with it, but I have redeemed myself.”

And that’s how you come out in Mexico – not because infidelity means you’re gay, but because the actor used the world ‘muchos’ instead of ‘muchas’, which means he’s talking about guys instead of woman (not being an expert on Spanish I’m taking that on trust).

Mendez is best known for the likes of Nosotros Los Nobles (We are the Nobles) and played a gays character in No se si cortarme las venas o dejarmelas largas (I Don’t Know Whether to Slit My Veins or Leave Them Long). He’s a fairly familiar face in Mexico and Spanish-speaking US households, even if he’s not that well known elsewhere.

Crush Of The Day: The Men Of Broadway’s Rocky Get Naked (NSFW)

rocky-boxers1-slideWhen a Broadway musical version of Rocky opened in March, there was a lot of praise for the innovative and highly complex sets (less so for the music), but fewer people mentioned that the guys who are part of the show’s ensemble are frigging hot!

Out seems to have noticed though, and despite the fact the show will be closing on August 17th, they’ve lined up four of the gents who’ve been part of the show, and gotten them to take all their clothes off for a photoshoot.

They may be out of a job in a couple of weeks time, but on the evidence of these pictures (taken by Cedric Terrell at a studio in New York’s Chelsea), we’re hoping James Brown III, Adrian Aguilar, Okieriete Onoadowan, and Adam Perr, find more work soon and that it involves them not having to wear too many clothes.

The Dog Trailer – How one bisexual man’s love for a trans woman led to Dog Day Afternoon

dog-documentary1The Dog has been screening to acclaim at film festivals around the world since its premiere at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Now it’s on limited cinema release in the US from Drafthouse Films, and will be on iTunes on August 15th, so it’s a great time for a new trailer.

The documentary tells how a young bisexual man’s desire to help his lover get gender-reassignment surgery, led to the bank robbery that inspired the classic 1975 Al Pacino movie, Dog Day Afternoon.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘John Wojtowicz’s libido was unrestrained even by the libertine standards of the era, with multiple wives and lovers, both women and men. In August 1972, he attempted to rob a Brooklyn bank to finance his lover’s sex-reassignment surgery, resulting in a 14-hour hostage situation that was broadcast live on television. Three years later, John was portrayed by Al Pacino as “Sonny,” and his crime immortalized in one of the most iconic New York movies of all time, “Dog Day Afternoon.” The film had a profound influence on Wojtowicz, and when he emerged from a six-year prison sentence, he was known by his self-imposed nickname: “The Dog.”

‘Drawing upon archival footage, the film shuffles between the 1970s and the 2000s. Touching upon the sexual revolution of the 1970s, we gain a first-hand perspective of New York’s historical gay liberation movement in which Wojtowicz played an active role. In later footage, he remains a subversive force, backed by the unconditional love and headstrong wit of his mother, Terry.’ [Read more…]

Daniel Radcliffe Talks About Gay Inclusion & His Comfort With Being Naked

daniel-radcliffe-750-slideDaniel Radcliffe may only be 25, but he’s fast being one of the most outspoken and steadfast of LGBT allies (the fact he grew up around gay people who were always part of his life helped set him on this path).

With his new movie, What If, hitting hitting cinemas, he’s been chatting to Out & The Advocate  about the film, and also plenty of other things. For example, when Out asked him what he thinks about openly gay Michael Sam making his NFL debut, he says (while showing an impressive understand of the American Football draft system for a Brit), “I think it’s fucking awesome. It’s fantastic that he’s got a team. It’s horrendous that he slipped to 249 after being the SEC defensive player of the year. People can say whatever they like about his athleticism, or not fitting the bill for certain conditions or whatever, but the fact is no player in the last six years to win that award has been drafted lower than 16th overall, I think. So it’s sad that that was an issue. But I think he’s amazing, frankly. In interviews, at no point does he allow himself to be portrayed as a victim or someone who deserves extra sympathy. He’s brilliant at shutting that down.”

He also talks about whether he thinks more films will be made in the future that are like What If, but centring on same sex couples. Radcliffe comments, “I still think we’ve got a ways to go before we see more types of films like What If made with same-sex couples. I say that because I was quite shocked when I did all the press for Kill Your Darlings and how much of a talking point it was for people that I was playing a gay character…

“The way gay people have been depicted [in entertainment] has changed so much in the last few years and hopefully that is what is normalizing it for everyone. Just look at characters like Cam and Mitch from Modern Family. They are hugely successful and get to every region of the country. Stories are now beginning to be told that include all different types and kinds of sexuality and characters who aren’t there for the sake of being gay, they just happen to be gay… I do think that in the next generation we will see an even bigger difference in how gay people are shown in the media and in film because people are getting over it, finally.”

There were also some questions about the other Dan seems completely comfortable with – nudity – which started when he was just 18 on stage in Equus, and has continued with the likes of Kill Your Darlings and now What If.

He tells The Advocate, “Once you’ve done Equus that really shakes any inhibitions you have out of you. Other actors might get to a scene like that and say, ‘Actually, I’d like to not be naked in that part,’ but because I’ve done it once on stage, it doesn’t really hold fears for me anymore…

“I would like to say at this point that I am not picking projects so I can get naked. It just so happens that in all the ones that have been released so far – and in fact the next two that will be released as well – I do show a bit of skin.”

And I’m sure there are many people out there who won’t complain about that.

James Franco Has His Say About ‘Homophobic’ Gawker Article Implying He’s In A Gay Relationship

Earlier this week the was plenty of internet buzz about a Gawker article called ‘James Franco Is Living With a Man’ that strongly implied the actor is in a gay relationship with frequent collaborator Scott Haze. The evidence Gawker had was taking little bits of a New York Times article – such as that the old art school buddies are ‘now so close that describing them merely as friends would be a disservice’ – and spinning it into a full-blown gay love affair.

The fact they seem to be sharing an apartment for the summer seems to be the major evidence, as apparently two men who aren’t screwing each other can’t possibly live in the same place. And for some reason the Gawker article seems to think that the fact they don’t take separate cars back to their shared apartment is absolute evidence they are bum buddies.

Now James has had his say about the article, and as always with a man who loves to stoke the speculation around his sexuality, he’s more rolling his eyes and pointing fingers at the attitude behind the writing of the article than worrying about the fact it says he and Haze are probably shagging.

Win A Poster From The Gay-Themed Ben Whishaw Movie Lilting!

lilting-quad-posterThe acclaimed Ben Whishaw-starring movie Lilting is out in UK cinemas now from distributor Artificial Eye. They’ve given us a great quad poster for the movie, which you can see above, which we’re giving away in this competition.

The opening film of this year’s BFI Flare London LGBT Film Festival, Lilting tells the story of a Cambodian-Chinese mother mourning the untimely death of her son. Her world is suddenly disrupted by the presence of a stranger (Whishaw), and we observe their difficulties in trying to connect with one another without a common language.

Through a translator they piece together memories of a man they both loved dearly, and realise that while they may not share a language, they are connected in their grief. A touching, intimate film about finding the things which bring us together, Lilting features rousing performances from its leads Ben Whishaw and Cheng Pei-Pei and has announced director Hong Khaou as a brave new voice in independent British cinema.

New Pride Trailer – Fresh look at the acclaimed British, gay-themed miners’ strike film

pride-better-slideAfter winning the Queer Palm at Cannes earlier this year, Pride is due to hit cinemas on both sides of the Atlantic in September (on the 12th in the UK and the 19th in North America). We’ll have a review of the movie for you before then, but you can get a fresh taste with the new US trailer below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Pride is inspired by an extraordinary true story.  It’s the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike, prompting a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers’ families. Initially rebuffed by the Union, the group identifies a tiny mining village in Wales and sets off to make their donation in person.  As the strike drags on, the two groups discover that standing together makes for the strongest union of all.‘

Miss Julie Trailer – Jessica Chastain & Colin Farrell have some bad romance

miss-julie-slideThe period drama Miss Julie premieres next month at TIFF. Ahead of that comes our first look at the film with a trailer, which may have French subtitles but still gives us a good taste and suggests we’re going to get a great performance from Jessica Chastain.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Taking place at a large country estate in Britain over the course of one 1880s midsummer night, Miss Julie explores the brutal, flirtatious power struggle between Julie and John – a young aristocratic woman and her father’s valet.

‘She is all hauteur longing for abasement; he, polished but coarse. The two of them held together by mutual loathing and attraction. At turns seductive and tender, savage and bullying, their story builds inevitably to a mad, impulsive tryst. Plans are made in desperation, a vision of a life together – unsure if the morning light then brings hope or hopelessness, Julie and John find their escape in an act that is as sublime and horrific as anything in Greek tragedy.

Lizzy Caplan Up For Seth Rogen & Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Xmas Movie

lizzy-caplanBack in February it was announced a 50/50 reunion was in the offing, with Seth Rogen & Joseph Gordon-Levitt re-teaming with director Jonathan Levine for a Christmassy comedy.

Since then Anthony Mackie has also signed up to star, and now Variety reports Masters Of Sex star Lizzy Caplan will also appear in the film.

The movie follow three childhood best friends who reunite in New York City for their annual tradition of going out on Christmas Eve. Rogen, Gordon-Levitt and Mackie will be those friends, with Caplan signing on to be Joseph’s love interest.

Filming starts next week in New York, with the presumption that it will hit cinemas Christmas 2015.

Lee Pace May Be A Prisoner Of War In A Sci-fi Thriller

lee-paceFollowing his duplicitous roles in The Hobbit and Guardians Of The Galaxy, (Richard Armitage’s possible boyfriend) Lee Pace is sticking with the fantastical as Deadline reports he’s set to star in the sci-fi thriller Prisoner Of War. Bérénice Marlohe is also set to star in the alien invasion tale.

The film is ‘the story of an American soldier and a French foreign aid worker who team up in Africa amid humankind’s last stand against a cataclysmic alien invasion.’

Chronicle’s Alex Russell was previously set to take the lead role, but he’s now been replaced by Pace. The movie will start filming in September on location in South Africa.
