The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones (DVD)

January 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Robert Sheehan, Kevin Zegers, Jemima West
Director: Harald Zwart
Running Time: 122 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: January 27th 2014

The people behind The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones must have thought they had a major hit on their hands. While it’s common for sequels to be put into development before the first movie is released (in Hollywood terms, paying a screenwriter for a first draft of a script is comparatively cheap), but in this case they’d already started casting the likes of Sigourney Weaver in City Of Ashes. However when City Of Bones only grossed $90 million around the world, the likelihood of adaptations of Cassandra Clare’s other books seemed far less likely. [Read more…]

Having premiered in the US on January 19th on HBO, the much-anticipated show about a group of gay friends in San Francisco makes its UK bow on Sky Atlantic on January 27th at 10.35pm. So after all the hype, was it worth it? The answer is yes, but perhaps not if you just judge it from the first episode. Burger Short Film -Take a look at the Iris Prize LGBT-themed Sundance prize winner

January 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

The makers of Burger have been celebrating this week, as the movie picked up the Special Jury Award for Direction and Ensemble Acting at the Sundance Film Festival in the short filmmaking categories. It was also a major win for the Iris Prize, as the film came through their programme.

We’re a bit of a fan on Iris at BGPS. It’s the world’s largest LGBT short film festival and takes place in Cardiff, Wales every Autumn. What particularly makes the festival stand out is that the winning short doesn’t just get a pat on the back, but the director gets funding and support to make a new short.

Magnus Mork won the prize in 2010 for his film The Samaritan, with Burger the movie he made with his prize winnings.

Burger follows the late night goings on in a Cardiff burger bar, and it’s currently available to watch on Youtube (or above), but you’ll have to be quick as it’s only available until January 26th.

Iris Prize chair Andrew Pierce comments, “This recognition by the Sundance Film Festival is yet more confirmation that Magnus Mork is a huge talent. This is also wonderful news for the Iris Prize and further highlights our work in supporting LGBT film talent.” [Read more…]

Joe Manganiello Premieres His Male Stripper Documentary Directorial Debut At Slamdance

January 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It seems that making Magic Mike had an oddly profound affect on many of the actors involved, making them fascinated by the world of male strippers. That certainly seems true of Joe Manganiello, who’s now turned director for the first time, making a documentary called La Bare, about a well known male strip club in Dallas, Texas.

Manganiello has been in Utah to premiere the movie at Slamdance, which is the more edgy little unofficial little brother of Sundance. While there he told EW, “I had zero interest in male stripping prior to Magic Mike. As a straight male, I had a lot of misperceptions about the industry. People would walk out of Magic Mike saying  ’I loved it but I wish there was more of the guys. I wish I knew more about them, where they live, who they go out with, what their lives are like.’ So I knew there was a lot left on the table.”

As a result he started putting together La Bare alongside his brother Nick. Using his own money, Joe was initially thinking of it being a reality series, but with Steven Soderbergh’s encouragement it’s become a feature-length documentary – and Manganiello’s directorial debut – which US audiences will get to see this summer.

You can take a look at a chat with Manganiello above about the movie above, while the trailer is available over at EW. [Read more…]

Where All The Stories are LOVE Stories Gay Marriage Documentary Seek Funding

January 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Gay marriage is slowly gaining ground in the US, although there’s a long way to go until all States recognise same sex marriages. Now photographer and filmmaker D’Arcy Benincosa is hoping to make the first feature-length documentary about to story of equal marriage in America and has launched a Kickstarter with the hope of raising $50,000 to get it done.

She says of the film, Where All The Stories are LOVE Stories, “In years to come, the couples, the judges, all the people involved in this change will be our heroes. A documentary film based on the unfolding events of 2014 will connect us to these heroes and to our shared humanity…

“The trend in our culture has been to portray our LGBT neighbors as misfits, always on the outskirts of normal society, often so eccentric that we are unable to relate. Rarely do you see a movie featuring gay couples sharing a simple kiss, holding hands, or looking at each other with expressions of everyday love– these simple actions are the foundation of everyone’s love story. They make art art and love love– your love and my love. I want to make a documentary film about these everyday, extraordinary stories that make us all the same.”

You can find out more about the documentary on the Kickstarter page, where you can of course help out if you’d like to. [Read more…]

Michael Urie, Andrew Rannells & Jonathan Groff Slam Anti-Gay Russian Laws With Great Musical Parody

January 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A team of Broadway stars have teamed up to create their own protest to Russia’s anti-gay law, and being theatre folk, they decided the best way was with a fun musical parody. In the piece, Russia wants to shut down all theatre for being just that little bit too gay.

The fictional musical ‘Love And Punishment’ certainly has a powerhouse cast, including Michael Urie, Andrew Rannells, Jonathan Groff, Jeremy Jordan, Stephanie J. Block, Joanna Gleason, Jackie Hoffman Laura Benanti and Roger Rees. It’s a show about same sex love behind the Iron Curtain, which doesn’t go down well with the Russian authorities.

It’s also a lot of fun, so take a look above. [Read more…]

John Boyega Takes On Jesse Owens Biopic

January 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

John-BoyegaA major biopic of Jesse Owens is long overdue, but hopefully now one is coming with the news that Attack The Block star John Boyega has signed up to play the legendary athlete, according to Variety.

Owens is best known for competing in the 1936 Olympics, when he went to Nazi Germany in the full face of Hitler’s Aryan ideas. The Fuhrer hoped the games would be a showcase of white superiority (indeed for a while he tried to prevent any non white or Jewish people from competing, but gave in after various countries threatened a boycott).

The African-American Owens ended up winning the 100m, the 200m, the long jump, and the 400m relay, setting three world records in the process.

Boyega made a big splash with Attack The Block, and since then has appeared in the likes of Half of a Yellow Sun. Stephen Hopkins is set to direct the biopic, which will start shooting in May. It even plans to film inside the real 1936 Berlin Olympic stadium, which will hopefully add an extra touch of authenticity.

Rupert Sanders

The ructions surrounding Rupert Sanders cheating on his wife with Kristen Stewart rather dulled the impact Snow White And The Huntsman could have has on his career, but he’s now signed up for a new major project. Deadline reports that he’s attached to helm Ghost in the Shell for DreamWorks.

A film based on the acclaimed Manga has been in the works for years, but this is the first major news for about five years. The adaptation has long been a passion project for Steven Spielberg, who acquired the property in 2008 and set Jamie Moss (Street Kings) to write the script, with Laeta Kalogridis later coming onboard to take over screenplay duties.

The project is based on Masamune Shirow’s 1989 Manga, which is about a covert unit within the Japanese National Public Safety Commission who fight tech-related crimes. Since it’s publication, it’s been adapted into an animate powerhouse franchise with the likes of Ghost In The Shell, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, Ghost in the Shell: Individual Eleven, Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex – The Laughing Man and Ghost in the Shell 2.0. It’s also been turned into successful videogames.

William Wheeler (The Tourist, The Hoax) wrote the most recent version of the script. However it isn’t known when it will shoot.
