Crush Of The Day: Rugby Star Nick Youngquest Shirtless & Oiled For Paco Rabanne

July 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While we normally only cover film-related things here at BGPS, sometimes we have to take a little time out to appreciate the beauty of the male form – for purely artistic and cultural reasons of course.

Our appreciation glands certainly shot up when he saw these new images and vid of insanely hot (and often clothing averse) Australian rugby star Nick Youngquest. They’re all part of a new campaign for Paco Rabanne’s fragrance, Invictus. So as you’d expect, the ad is ridiculously over the top and the images have nothing to do with smelling nice – but they look good nevertheless.

The commercial, shot by French director Alexandre Courtès, supposedly follows Youngquest “through the euphoria of victory”.

You’ll also be pleased to hear that Castleford Tigers player Nick is very LGBT friendly. And if you want some more revealing pics, just search for his images from the Naked Rugby League Calendar 2007-2008, where only his hand covers his modesty.

Gay Sci-Fi Author David Gerrold & Geeks Out Unimpressed By Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game ‘Tolerance’ Plea

July 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Orson-Scott-CardEarlier this week, the gay group Geeks Out announced they are planning a boycott of the movie version of Ender’s Game due to the fact that it’s based on a novel by Orson Scott Card, who is very anti-gay and sits of the board of the virulently homophobic National Organization For Marriage.

The boycott led Card to respond, asking for tolerance and seemingly accepting he’d lost the gay marriage debate. He said, “Ender’s Game is set more than a century in the future and has nothing to do with political issues that did not exist when the book was written in 1984. With the recent Supreme Court ruling, the gay marriage issue becomes moot. The Full Faith and Credit clause of the Constitution will, sooner or later, give legal force in every state to any marriage contract recognized by any other state.

“Now it will be interesting to see whether the victorious proponents of gay marriage will show tolerance toward those who disagreed with them when the issue was still in dispute.”

However, many have been less than impressed with this plea, including Geeks Out themselves and gay sci-fi author, David Gerrold (who, among many other things, wrote the classic Star Trek episode, The Trouble With Tribbles).

Geeks Out responded by saying, ‘The Bill of Rights protects your freedom of speech but it does not protect your right to a blockbuster opening weekend…

‘This plea for tolerance is perhaps a bridge too far, especially from someone who characterized gay marriage as “the bludgeon [The Left] use to make sure that it becomes illegal to teach traditional values in the schools,” (2012). There’s nothing more democratic and tolerant than a consumer boycott, rooted in the ideas of free market accountability. Skip Ender’s Game is about doing what all of us do every day—use facts to determine who and what to support with our money.

‘Orson Scott Card, we can tolerate your anti-gay activism, your right-wing extremism, your campaign of fear-mongering and insults, but we’re not going to pay you for it. You’ve got the right to express your opinions and beliefs any way you choose—but you don’t have a right to our money. How many homophobic billboards and absurd “Gathering Storm” ads would a new fortune built off of Ender’s Game lunchboxes buy for NOM?’

Gerrold meanwhile wrote on his Facebook page, ‘After twenty years of despicably virulent homophobia, no. This is just another detestable characterization of LGBT people — that we are intolerant. Intolerant? Of people who want to lock us up, put us in concentration camps, deny us our civil rights? Intolerant? Are you fucking kidding me? You want me to be tolerant, Scott? First be one of those people who understands. Or to put it bluntly — get your fucking foot off my neck, then we’ll talk tolerance.

‘See, Scott — I don’t dislike you. I honestly don’t. I think you’re a very interesting author and you’ve turned out some works I admire. But you’ve made PR Mistake Number One. You’ve sided with hate-mongers. You’ve targeted a minority and you’ve characterized yourself as the righteous warrior. That gives you a short-term gain and a long-term loss. Look up Father Coughlin and Anita Bryant and Kirk Cameron.

‘Now you’ve made PR Mistake Number Two — instead of honestly and sincerely apologizing for the hurt you have caused others, you have doubled down. You have played the martyr card, arguing that you are the victim…

“Our nation was founded on the idea that ‘we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men (people) are created equal, endowed with certain inalienable rights — and that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.’ Your public statements, Orson Scott Card, put you on the wrong side of that declaration. Until you recognize that your public utterances have been at the service of bigotry and prejudice, there can be no redemption for you in the eyes of the LGBT community. Or anyone else, for that matter.”

You can find out more about the planned boycott at Skip Ender’s Game.

Andrew Garfield Wants To Know Why Can’t Spiderman Be Gay?

July 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-manAlthough Hollywood might occasionally put a gay side-character into a big movie, there’s little chance they’d make the hero of a major big-budget superhero movie on the LGBT spectrum. But Spider-man himself, Andrew Garfield, wants to know why.

Talking to EW he asks, “What if MJ is a dude? Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking! So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”

Garfield even know who he wants to play the male MJ. “I’ve been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since The Wire,” he says. “He’s so charismatic and talented. It’d be even better—we’d have interracial bisexuality!”

His questioning was a result of a discussion with producer Matt Tolmach about Mary Jane or ‘MJ’ to fans, where he says, “I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ.”

I think it’s safe to say that MJ will remain female, even if Shailene Woodley, who came in to do a few scenes as Mary Jane, was recently cut from The Amazing Spider-man 2. She was supposed to be a small part of the second film, before becoming more important in parts 3 & 4. It’s already been decided the part will be recast – which does leave the door open to Spidey going on the downlow, but to be honest, I can’t see it happening.

The Canyons Trailer – Lindsay Lohan & James Deen think cinema is dead

July 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been a lot of talk about The Canyons, the ultra-low budget movie from writer Bret Easton Ellis and director Paul Schrader. However most of those who’s actually seen it have suggested that while it hints at being something interesting, it’s not been fully realised. Steven Soderbergh even offered to re-edit it, to see whether he could tease it into something better. Schrader rejected the offer though.

Despite the mixed reaction, the talk about the film – from its sex scenes to profiles of Lohan’s difficult on-set behaviour – ensured it got US distribution, and will be in cinemas on August 2nd. Now there’s a slightly pretentious new trailer that seems believe cinema is dead!

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Christian is a young LA trust-fund dude who’s financing a horror film simply to keep his dad off his back about doing something with his life. He has been dating Tara for about a year — she was an aspiring actress/model who settled down with him when the reality of the business became apparent to her. She’s now just Christian’s bored plaything. Christian’s assistant Gina is casting the film with assistance from Tara. Gina is pushing Ryan, her boyfriend and struggling actor, for the lead. Unbeknownst to either Christian or Gina, Ryan and Tara were a couple three years ago. When Ryan came back into Tara’s life during the auditions for the movie, they reignited their affair. But Christian, a dangerous control-freak, finds out about the affair and starts playing cruel mind games with both Tara and Ryan, which escalate into an act of bloody violence.’

Oldboy Red Band Trailer – Take a look at Spike Lee’s remake of Park Chan-Wook’s film

July 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As we were promised, the first trailer for Spike Lee’s version of Oldboy has been released, which partially seems to be about trying to assuage fans of Park Chan-Wook’s original that this will be its own beast, while keeping the best bits of the original. To be honest, I don’t think it’s gonna help, as those who love Wook’s Oldboy, really love it and pretty much see Lee’s film as sacrilege, whatever it turns out to be like.

It does look like it might be okay though.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘OLDBOY is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment. Co-starring Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley, OLDBOY was directed by Spike Lee, from a script by Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, The Cell, Thor). The film was produced by Roy Lee, Doug Davison and Nathan Kahane.’

The film will hit cinemas this autumn. [Read more…]

Seventh Son Trailer – Plus a new poster for the Jeff Bridges fantasy

July 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Young Adult fantasy has proved a difficult genre, as while success can be enormous, more often than not they barely make a dent at the box office. However after spending decades trying to get it off the ground, Jeff Bridges will be hoping audiences take to Seventh Son. Now we get our first taste with a trailer and poster.

Here’s the official synopsis: ‘In a time long past, an evil is about to be unleashed that will reignite the war between the forces of the supernatural and humankind once more.

‘Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges) is a knight who had imprisoned the malevolently powerful witch, Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore), centuries ago.  But now she has escaped and is seeking vengeance.  Summoning her followers of every incarceration, Mother Malkin is preparing to unleash her terrible wrath on an unsuspecting world.

‘Only one thing stands in her way: Master Gregory. In a deadly reunion, Gregory comes face to face with the evil he always feared would someday return.  Now he has only until the next full moon to do what normally takes years: train his new apprentice, Tom Ward (Ben Barnes) to fight a dark magic unlike any other.

‘Man’s only hope lies in the seventh son of a seventh son.’

It’ll be out later this year. [Read more…]

New Filth Trailer – The title is really apt for the James McAvoy movie

July 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

James McAvoy also seems such a nice guy, but he’s going to be channelling something a lot more dark and dangerous for Filth, based on Irvine Welsh’s novel, and we’ve now got more evidence of that with a new trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Scheming Bruce Robertson (James McAvoy), a bigoted and corrupt policeman, is in line for a promotion and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Enlisted to solve a brutal murder and threatened by the aspirations of his colleagues, including Ray Lennox (Jamie Bell), Bruce sets about ensuring their ruin, right under the nose of unwitting Chief Inspector Toal. As he turns his colleagues against one another by stealing their wives and exposing their secrets, Bruce starts to lose himself in a web of deceit that he can no longer control. His past is slowly catching up with him, and a missing wife, a crippling drug habit and suspicious colleagues start to take their toll on his sanity. The question is: can he keep his grip on reality long enough to disentangle himself from the filth?

‘James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class) gives the performance of his career and he is joined by a fantastic cast, including Jamie Bell (The Adventures of Tintin), Imogen Poots (Fright Night), Oscar winning actor, Jim Broadbent (The Iron Lady), Joanne Froggatt (‘Downton Abbey’), Shirley Henderson (Trainspotting), Eddie Marsan (The Illusionist), Emun Elliott (Prometheus), Martin Compston (Sweet Sixteen), Shauna Macdonald (The Descent) and Gary Lewis (Gangs of New York).

‘Written by Irvine Welsh and Jon S. Baird who also directs, Filth is produced by Ken Marshall, Will Clarke and Irvine Welsh.’

It reaches UK cinemas October 4th. [Read more…]

Johnny Depp In Talks For David Koepp’s Mortdecai

July 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Johnny-DeppJohnny Depp’s The Lone Ranger may have flopped at the US box office, but he’s still a big star that pretty much everyone wants to work with. As a result he’s now in talks for Mortdecai, which will reunite him with Secret Window writer/director David Koepp, according to THR.

Koepp is currently rewriting the original script by Eric Aronson, which in turn is based on Kyril Bonfiglioli’s 1970s book The Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery.

Depp will play, ‘Charles Mortdecai, a debonair art dealer and part-time rogue who, according to the studio, “must traverse the globe armed only with his good looks and special charm in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.” He also has to juggle angry Russians, the British Mi5, his impossibly leggy wife and an international terrorist.’

It’s not clear when it will start shooting.

Another Day of the Dead Reboot Planned

July 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

day-of-the-dead-romeroGeorge A. Romero’s Dead movies are quite interesting legally, as no one owns the first one (due to a copyright snafu that resulted in it entering the public domain), while the second, third and subsequent movies are owned by different people and treated as completely separate entities rather than a series.

As a result, anyone can remake Night Of The Living Dead (and quite a few have), and we’ve already had separate do-overs of Dawn Of The Dead and Day Of The Dead. It was only 2008 when we got the remake of the last of those, but the rights holders obviously want to squeeze a bit more cash from their property, as The LA Times reports that another new take is already in the works.

Lati Grobman and Christa Campbell, who produced Texas Chainsaw 3D, now hold those rights, with Campbell commenting, “We want to keep it as close to the Romero version as possible, to make sure that his fans are happy. These are not going to be zombies climbing walls and doing back flips like in ‘World War Z.’”

The plan is to make it for $10-$20 million and release the film in 2014.

The original movies sees a group of soldiers and scientists hiding in a bunker from the undead plague. They then do experiments a captive zombie in the hope of understanding what’s going on.

First Official Look At Amazing Spider-man 2’s Electro

July 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

amazing-spider-man-2-ew-cover
A couple of months ago we posted a few set photos, giving us a look at Jamie Foxx’s blue Electro, but it’s only now we get out first official look, with Electro facing off against Spider-man on the cover on Entertainment Weekly.

He’s not exactly pretty, but he does look rather cool.

Here’s the film’s synopsis: ‘In The Amazing Spider-Man™ 2, for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.’

It’s due in cinemas May 2014.
