There was major surprise when it was announced that Tom Cruise had attached himself to star in Universal’s planned reboot of The Mummy franchise. Part of the reason is was so unexpected is that few had thought such an established star would have either been sought or would have wanted to sign on. However, then it turned out Cruise wasn’t the only big name the studio was after for its interconnected monster universe, with Johnny Depp signing on to play The Invisible Man in a new, standalone movie.
Now it looks like Russell Crowe may be joining the throng, as THR reports he’s in talks to play Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The plan is for the character to make his first appearance in The Mummy, before becoming part of a universe that will also include new The Bride of Frankenstein and The Creature From the Black Lagoon movies. Tom Hardy and Javier Bardem were previously in talks for the role, but neither signed on the dotted line.
The Mummy is currently shooting in London, and ‘is set in the modern day with Cruise playing a special forces soldier (or former soldier)’. Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis and Jake Johnson also star.
