Glengarry Glen Ross (Blu-ray/DVD)

October 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Kevin Spacey, Alex Baldwin, Ed Harris
Director: James Foley
Running Time: 100 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 22nd 2012

Glengarry Glen Ross is proof of what can happen when you put a great script in the hands of an ensemble of dynamite actors. In many ways Glengarry Glen Ross shouldn’t work. It’s largely about people sitting around talking, has minimal plot, and never fully escapes the stage that David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play was originally presented on.

However, what in many films would be seen as shortcomings are here the movie’s greatest strengths, as it allows the film to concentrate on the electric dynamism of Mamet’s dialogue in the hands of one of the best groups of actors ever assembled for a film (even Jack Lemmon said it was the best cast he’d ever been involved with, which is saying something). After all, it contains four Oscar-winners and two more Oscar nominees, which is certainly an impressive line-up, especially as likes of Kevin Spacey weren’t that well known when it was made. Stand Up Guys Trailer – Al Pacino teams up with Christopher Walken

September 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In Stand Up Guys, Val (Al Pacino) is released from prison after serving 28 years for refusing to give up one of his close criminal associates. His best friend Doc (Christopher Walken) is there to pick him up, and the two soon re-team with another old pal, Hirsch. Their bond is as strong as ever, and the three reflect on freedom lost and gained, loyalties ebbed and flowed, and days of glory gone by. And despite their age, their capacity for mayhem is still very much alive and well – bullets fly as they make a hilariously valiant effort to compensate for the decades of crime, drugs and sex they’ve missed. But one of the friends is keeping a dangerous secret – he’s been put in an impossible quandary by a former mob boss, and his time to find an acceptable alternative is running out. As the sun rises on the guys’ legendary reunion, their position becomes more and more desperate and they finally confront their past once and for all.

Al Pacino Takes On Joe Paterno Biopic

September 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Al Pacino often seems to be phoning it in these days, he’s now attached to role he may be able to really sink his teeth into, playing former Penn State University football coach Joe Paterno, based on Joe Posnanski’s biography, Paterno.

The book delve’s into the coach’s life before becoming PSU’s head football coach back in 1966, the influence he had over the school, and his eventual downfall after last year’s scandal that rocked the entire college football community. Jerry Sandusky, Penn State’s defensive coordinator, was revealed as a pedophile who sexually assaulted young boys for decades. Joe Paterno was fired after 46 years at the school, for his role in trying to cover up and ignore the scandal. He died in January at the age of 85.

At the moment the project could be developed for either a feature film or a TV movie, although it isn’t known if a screenwriter has been brought on board to adapt the non-fiction book. (Source: Deadline)

Adam Sandler Breaks The Razzie Record With 10 ‘Awards’

April 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s safe to say that this year’s Razzie voters are not Adam Sandler fans. The actor already broke Eddie Murphy’s record for having the most nominations in a year, and now he’s gone one better (worse?) by sweeping the board and receiving a record 10 gongs for filmic awfulness.

Admittedly not every single award went to him personally, but it does mean Jack & Jill, which Sandler both produced and starred in, is the first film in the 32-year history of the Razzies to sweep all 10 dishonourable categories. Sandler won for both Worst Actor and Worst Actress, an impressive feat in itself, while co-stars Al Pacino and David Spade also picked up gongs in the worst supporting actor and actress categories.

It’s actually a pretty impressive achievement and Sandler ought to be oddly proud, while feeling extremely ashamed at the same time!

While the Razzies are normally given out the day before the Oscars, this year it was changed to nominations were announced as Oscar time, with the winners announced on April Fools Day. Voting was also expanded from just Golden Raspberry members to the users of the Rotten Tomatoes websites, so it really was a popular vote deciding Sandler’s film was the absolute worst!

Al Pacino, Christopher Walken & Alan Arkin Are Stand Up Guys

February 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, and Alan Arkin make up quite a cast of acting luminaries. Now THR reports they have all joined the action-comedy Stand Up Guys. News of the project first surface back in February 2009, when it was known as Old Timers.

The film is about an aging hitman, who is considering taking a job where he has to kill his friend. He reunites with another old criminal cohort for one last night of recklessness, where they ponder their life choices while running from the police. It isn’t clear which roles the three actors will portray.

Fisher Stevens (yes, the guy from Short Circuit) is directing Stand Up Guys from a script by Noah Haidle. Production is scheduled to begin this April in Los Angeles.
