Benedict Cumberbatch Is Gay Codebreaker Alan Turing In New Imitation Game Pics

Benedict Cumberbatch & Charles Dance in The Imitation Game

While some are still angry that Benedict Cumberbatch is playing Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, early buzz says it could be the strongest performance of the his career so far (although many Leo DiCaprio fans will never get over the fact he was supposed to star at some point).

Now a couple of new pics have arrived via Empire, which may not convince anyone he look anything like Turing, but we’re sure his fans will be excited.

The film is a biopic of Turing, a pioneer of modern-day computing who is credited with helping crack the fiendish German codes, such as Enigma, during the Second World War. The film chronicles the nail-biting race against time by Turing and his brilliant team at Britain’s top-secret code-breaking centre, Bletchley Park. Turing, whose contributions and genius significantly shortened the war, saving thousands of lives, was the eventual victim of an unenlightened British Establishment.

Tragically in the 1950s Turing admitted to the police he was gay while reporting a robbery, believing they would protect him and catch those who’d stolen from him. Instead it was him who found himself in court. After he was convicted he was shunned by the establishment and despite his incredible mind he found himself pushed to the sidelines. He committed suicide (although some say it was an accident) not too long afterwards.

Director Morten Tyldum says of what drew him to the film, “It is such a complex story. It was the gay rights element, but also how his ideas were kept secret and how incredibly important his work was during the war, that he was never given credit for it.”

Cumberbatch stars alongside Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Mark Strong, Rory Kinnear, Charles Dance, Allen Leech and Matthew Beard. The film currently has an Oscar-bait November release date set.

Penguins of Madagascar Trailer – Benedict Cumberbatch turns wolf

June 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

penguins-of-madagascar-pic1DreamWorks Animation has definitely been a bit hit and miss, but they’ve definitely has success and plenty of profit from the Madagascar movies. From the first film is was clear that one of the best things about the franchise was the Penguins.

They soon got their own TV series, and now they’re getting a spin-off movie, which also benefits from the voice talents of Benedict Cumberbatch as a wolf.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Discover the secrets of the most entertaining and mysterious birds in the global espionage game: Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private now must join forces with the chic spy organization, the North Wind, led by Agent Classified (we could tell you his name, but then … you know), voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch to stop the villainous Dr. Octavius Brine, voiced by John Malkovich, from taking over the world.’

Will Tom Hardy Or Benedict Cumberbatch Be Marvel’s Doctor Strange?

June 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

tom-hardyWith the news a couple of days ago that Scott Derrickson will direct Marvel’s comic book movie Doctor Strange, it was inevitable that rumours and speculation would emerge about who would play the character.

Now we’ve got two names to mull over, as Deadline reports that Marvel is apparently considering Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch for the title role. Earlier this week it was suggested that Oscar winner Jared Leto may also be up for the part.

Doctor Strange was mentioned in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and it’s known Marvel has been developing a stand-alone film for the character for some time. However while a director has been announced, at the moment we don’t know exactly when it will be released.

2016 is the presumption at this point, which would mean Marvel will probably be hoping to fill the title role fairly soon. However at this stage its not known if there have been any talks at all with Cumberbatch, Hardy or Leto’s people, or whether at the moment the actors are merely on a wishlist.

New Pics Of Benedict Cumberbatch As Gay Codebreaker Alan Turing In The Imitation Game

June 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

imitation-game-pic2Back in December the first image of Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game was released. Now EW has brought us a couple more, as well at the actor’s brief thoughts on playing the character.

Turing is a pioneer of modern-day computing who is credited with helping crack the fiendish German codes, such as Enigma, during the Second World War. As Cumberbatch says, “He’s an exceptional man. I hope this film does justice to this unsung hero.”

Benedict Cumberbatch & Adam Scott Join Johnny Depp In Black Mass

May 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Benedict-CumberbatchBenedict Cumberbatch is the new Guy Pearce, or at least he is in Black Mass, as THR reports that he’s taking over from the Aussie actor in the Whitey Bulger biopic.

He will play Whitey Bulger’s brother Billy, the former President of the Massachusetts State Senate.

James ‘Whitey’ Bulger (Johnny Depp) was a Boston criminal who ended up becoming an FBI informant, with the help of his longtime friend and FBI agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) and his brother (Cumberbatch). However Whitey didn’t completely turn good guy, as his tips to the feds were mainly about getting rid of his mob competition.

When Connolly tipped Bulger off that the feds were planning on double-crossing him, the criminal went into hiding for more than a decade, rising to the top of the FBI’s Most Wanted list before he was eventually caught in 2011 while hiding out in Santa Monica, California.

Billy was never implicated in Whitey’s criminal activities, but his political opponents inevitably tried to use his brother’s reputation against him.

Adam Scott has also signed on to be FBI agent Robert Fitzpatrick

Cumberbatch is a bit of a last-minute replacement as shooting is currently under way in Boston.

Benedict Cumberbatch & Will Poulter On For War Drama The Yellow Birds

May 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Benedict-CumberbatchLots of new movies have been announced at Cannes and now it’s time for one more, with THR reporting that Benedict Cumberbatch, Tye Sheridan, and Will Poulter will star in The Yellow Birds, with David Lowery directing.

The film is an adaptation of Iraq veteran Kevin Powers’ modern war novel about ‘two soldiers, 21-year-old Private Bartle and 18-year old Private Murphy, who meet in boot camp. Bartle made a promise to Murphy’s mother to guide him home safely and takes the young private under his wing, but soon finds that promise hard to keep as they navigate a war where casual atrocity is a daily occurrence.’

Tom Wolfe has referred to the book as “All Quiet on the Western Front for America’s Arab wars.”

It’s not 100% clear who the actors will play, as Variety suggests it’ll be Cumberbatch and Sheridan as the young soldiers, but Benedict seems a lot old at 37 to play a 21-year-old. It’s more likely Sheridan and Poulter will be the young men, leaving Cumberbatch as an older soldier (presumably their CO).

Benedict Cumberbatch Going Up Blood Mountain

January 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Benedict-cumberbatchBenedict Cumberbatch appears to want to do something mountainous. He was attached to Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak but ended up backing out of that, however now he’s going to be scaling the indie thriller Blood Mountain instead, according to Variety.

Jonathan W. Stokes wrote the original script, with extra work done by John Romano. Sergei Bodrov (Mongol, Seventh Son) is set to direct.

The movie ‘follows a private military contractor whose special forces team is ambushed and killed during a covert raid, forcing him to personally escort one of the world’s most wanted terrorists over hostile terrain in order to bring him to justice. With a bounty at stake and insurgents and rival mercenaries hunting them, the two find themselves facing not only their enemies, but each other in their fight for survival.’

It’ll start shooting in Morocco in April.

First Official Pic Of Benedict Cumberbatch As Gay Codebreaker Alan Turing In The Imitation Game Arrives

December 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

imitation-game-pic1
A couple of days ago the Queen official pardoned codebreaker Alan Turing for the ‘crime’ of being gay at a time when it was illegal, which led to a criminal record and chemical castration, and many believe also resulted in his committing suicide. It’s a good time then for the emergence of the first official picture of Benedict Cumberbatch as Turing in the biopic The Imitation Game – indeed the pardon is the reason the film’s Twitter account tweeted the pic.

Turing is a pioneer of modern-day computing who is credited with helping crack the fiendish German codes, such as Enigma, during the Second World War. The film will chronicle the nail-biting race against time by Turing and his brilliant team at Britain’s top-secret code-breaking centre, Bletchley Park. He committed suicide (although some say it was an accident) not too long afterwards.

Cumberbatch stars alongside Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Mark Strong, Rory Kinnear, Charles Dance, Allen Leech and Matthew Beard. The Imitation Game will be out sometime in 2014.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug (Cinema)

December 11, 2013 By Stephen Sclater Leave a Comment

Starring: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom, Benedict Cumberbatch
Director: Peter Jackson
Running Time: 161
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: December 13th 2013

After the massive success of Lord Of The Rings, The Hobbit: An unexpected Journey wasn’t as well received by fans and critics. This was due to running time, the lengthy introduction to all the new characters, as well as Peter Jackson’s controversial decision to film and project it at 48fps (which many complained gave it a video feel).

So has Jackson redeemed himself with the diehard fans of Middle Earth with part two of the Hobbit trilogy? Yes, Smaug is The Two Towers compared to the slower Fellowship of the Ring. [Read more…]

Robert Pattinson Joins The Lost City of Z, Alongside Benedict Cumberbatch

November 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

robert-pattinson-diorRobert Pattinson has gone more for some unusual movies outside the Twilight franchise, such as Cosmopolis and Remember Me. He’s currently got another film with Cronenberg in the works now (Map To The Stars) and one with Werner Herzog (Queen of the Desert). Now he’s planning to add The Lost City of Z, starring alongside Benedict Cumberbatch.

The film will be directed by James Gray, based on David Grann’s book about doomed Amazon explorer Colonel Percy Harrison Fawcett (Cumberbatch). Screen Daily’s print issue (via TheWrap) says that Pattinson is now on board. There’s no news on who he will play. Some are suggesting he’ll be Fawcett’s son, who also went on expeditions with him, although he seems a little close in age to Cumberbatch for that.

Here’s a few more details about the book: ‘In 1925, Fawcett ventured into the Amazon to find an ancient civilization, hoping to make one of the most important discoveries in history. For centuries Europeans believed the world’s largest jungle concealed the glittering kingdom of El Dorado. Thousands had died looking for it, leaving many scientists convinced that the Amazon was truly inimical to humankind. But Fawcett, whose daring expeditions helped inspire Conan Doyle’s The Lost World, had spent years building his scientific case. Captivating the imagination of millions around the globe, Fawcett embarked with his twenty-one-year-old son, determined to prove that this ancient civilization—which he dubbed “Z”—existed. Then he and his expedition vanished.’
