Chris O’Dowd Up To Join Bill Murray & Melissa McCarthy In St. Vincent De Van Nuys

Chris O’Dowd’s career continues to flourish with the news that he’s in talks to join Ted Melfi’s movie St. Vincent De Van Nuys, according to Deadline, which would see him star alongside Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy.

The film is about a hard-working single mother (McCarthy) who hands her child over to a cantankerous old man (Murray) to watch over him while she tries to make ends meet with her various jobs. O’Dowd will play the local parish priest, who counsels the old man. He’d sympathetic to the situation, but shocked at all of the horrible habits and lessons Murray’s character chooses to pass down to the impressionable 12-year-old kid.

Shooting on the indie movie is set to star this July.

Melissa McCarthy Circling St. Vincent de Van Nuys

March 12, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Melissa-McCarthyMelissa McCarthy is busy proving that you don’t have to be 21 and a stick figure to be a female movie star. She’s currently the hottest comedy actress around and now Deadline reports that she’s been offered the female lead in St. Vincent de Van Nuys, although she’s yet to officially sign on.

The movie is about a cantankerous old man (Bill Murray) who forms a bond with the 12-year-old son of a single mother (the role McCarthy is circling) who moves in next door. It seems likely McCarthy will agree, as she auditioned for the role rather than the offer coming out of the blue.

Theodore Melfi is making his directorial debut based on his own script, which was featured on The Black List of the best unproduced screenplays in 2011. The movie is being pitched as being in the same vein as Silver Linings Playbook and As Good As It Gets.

The writer-director commented, “The relationship transforms both the man and the boy and even though he teaches the kid everything about his decadent lifestyle, from fighting to drinking, gambling and how to cheat lie and steal. And the 12-year-old has such a pure soul that he only extracts the good from all this.”

Shooting should start this summer on a $13 million budget. It may be timing that’s the main issue over whether McCarthy does officially sign on, as she’s also due to shoot her directorial debut Tammy this summer, once the latest season of her TV show Mike & Molly comes to an end.

Cate Blanchett & Bill Murray Join Monuments Men

October 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Earlier this year George Clooney signed up to direct and star in Monuments Men, which at the time Sony was due to fully finance. However Sony has apparently realised that with Ghostbusters 3 now due to shoot next year, it’s rather over-committed on projects and so has gone to Fox and gotten them to split costs on the $50 million movie with them.

Fox initially hoped to buy the project outright, but despite their financial constraints, Sony was keen to hold onto half of the film. The movie will be based on the nonfiction book, The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History by Robert M. Edsel, tells the story of the US government’s efforts to retrieve artwork stolen by the Nazis and the art experts whose skills were put to use in the campaign. The title comes from the name given to the American and British art historians and museum curators who helped the military track down the stolen pieces.

THR also reports that Cate Blanchett is attached as the female lead, and Bill Murray is said to be involved as well. Unfortunately there’s no news on what roles they might be playing. Jean Dujardin recently entered negotiations to star in the movie too.

Will Ghostbuster 3 Finally Shoot Summer 2013?

October 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For years now there have been rumours, plans and speculation about a third Ghostbusters movie, but the film has been constantly held up, largely due to Bill Murray’s reluctance to return. However while he recently finally decided not to be part of the movie at all, he did give the necessary permission for things to move forward without him (Murray, Da Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and director Ivan Reitman all have veto power over sequels).

Now, buried in a Deadline report about Reitman’s Kevin Costner starring film Draft Day being put on hold is the news that Ghostbusters 3 may finally shoot summer 2013. Draft Day was delayed because Costner is too busy on Paramount projects (Jack Ryan, Without Remorse etc.), and there won’t be time to shoot the movie before Sony hopes to get the proton pack back on next summer.

Assuming it all works out (which is a big assumption where this film’s rocky road to the screen is concerned) Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Sigourney Weaver are all coming back to teach a new generation of Ghostbusters the ropes of the profession.

Bill Murray Heads For St. Vincent de Van Nuys

July 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s always good news when Bill Murray decides to star in a movie, and now he’s in early talks to star in the comedy St. Vincent de Van Nuys for writer-director Theodore Melfi and 20th Century Fox, according to Variety.

The story is about a 12-year-old boy who strikes up a bizarre relationship with his misanthropic retired neighbor (Murray), whose life revolves around drinking, gambling, and prostitutes. The screenplay landed on the 2011 Black List, where it received the same amount of votes as Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. Jack Nicholson was previously rumored to star as the elderly neighbor before Bill Murray expressed interest.

It isn’t clear exactly clear when the film will short.

Ghostbusters 3 Gets Writer Etan Cohen

July 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There can only be a couple of screenwriters in Hollywood who haven’t had a crack at Ghostbusters 3 by now. Last week, Dan Aykroyd teased that there was yet another “new writing staff” working on the screenplay. Now Variety reports that Etan Cohen (Men in Black 3) is the man who’s signed on to rework the script.

Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg (The Office, Year One) were hired to write the screenplay back in 2008 and since then it’s been through many hand. The project has primarily been stalled by actor Bill Murray, who is rumored to have hated the screenplays (they can’t make the film without his approval). The actor revealed on the Late Show with David Letterman last month that he was hesitant about signing on for the sequel, but he’s also said that it is a possibility. Sony is hoping that Cohen is the one who can make Murray happy!

Ghostbusters stars Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver will all likely return, if the project ever gets off the ground. Etan Cohen’s other credits include Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, Tropic Thunder, and Idiocracy.

Hyde Park On Hudson Trailer – Bill Murray gets his FDR on

May 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In June 1939, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his wife Eleanor host the King and Queen of England for a weekend at the Roosevelt home at Hyde Park on Hudson, in upstate New York – the first-ever visit of a reigning English monarch to America. With Britain facing imminent war with Germany, the Royals are desperately looking to FDR for support. But international affairs must be juggled with the complexities of FDR’s domestic establishment, as wife, mother, and mistresses all conspire to make the royal weekend an unforgettable one. Seen through the eyes of Daisy, Franklin’s neighbor and intimate, the weekend produces not only a special relationship between two great nations, but, for Daisy, a deeper understanding of the mysteries of love and friendship. Murray certainly looks like he’ll make an interesting President, and won’t just rest on being Bill Murray, which he’s done for the past few years (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

Moonrise Kingdom Trailer

January 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I’m never sure whether I like Wes Anderson movies or not. I think it’s probably most accurate to say that I’m bemused by them. However he has a lot of devoted fans who’ll be looking forward to his next effort, Moonrise Kingdom. From this first trailer, it seems we’re back into a world of whimsy and eccentricity, with plenty of stars along for the ride, including Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Jason Schwartzman. Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, Moonrise Kingdom tells the story of two 12-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing offshore, and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in more ways than anyone can handle. Bruce Willis plays the local sheriff. Edward Norton is a Khaki Scout troop leader. Bill Murray and Frances McDormand portray the young girl’s parents. It should be in cinemas this summer.

Bill Murray Signs Up For Charlie Swan

October 31, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Roman Coppola may have been busy busy as a second unit director for his father Francis, sister Sofia and friend Wes Anderson, but a decade ago it seemed he was a promising director in his own right. He released CQ in 2001, but we haven’t had anything from him since.

That’s about to change though as he’s currently making A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, and the cast has just got a whole lot better with the announcement Bill Murray has agreed to take a role in the movie. According to Variety, he’s taking an unknown role in the movie, alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Patricia Arquette.

Charlie Sheen is playing the title role, a ‘a successful graphic designer whose fame, money and charm have made him irresistible to women. When his girlfriend breaks up with him, his life swirls into a downward spiral of doubt, confusion and reflection. Through delirious fantasies involving his many failed romances, he begins the hard road of self-evaluation to come to terms with life without her.’ So nothing reflective of Sheen’s real life there then. Shooting has already begun.
