The Overnight (DVD/VoD Review)

October 26, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Adam Scott, Taylor Schilling, Jason Schwartzman, Judith Godrèche
Director: Patrick Brice
Running Time: 79 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 26th 2015 (UK)

Sometimes when it comes to indie film darlings it’s difficult to see what all the fuss was about. With The Overnight that’s not too much of an issue, as while it might not quite deserve some of the raves it received following its first festival screenings, it’s still a good movie.

Alex (Adam Scott) and Emily (Taylor Schilling) are a 30-something couple with a kid, who are newly arrived in California. It’s not been an easy move, with stay-at-home dad Alex feeling slightly dislocated and friendless. He randomly meets Kurt (Jason Schwartzman) in the park, who invites Alex and Emily over to his house for the evening.

Once there they meet Kurt’s French wife Charlotte (Judith Godrèche), and Alex and Emily can’t help but feel they may have found some firm friends in the arty, free-thinking, bohemian and seemingly cool couple. As the evening goes on the straitlaced Emily and Alex begin to loosen up – thanks to some liquor and pot – but while Alex feels increasingly free and with his inhibitions falling away, Emily begins to wonder whether Kurt and Charlotte are a bit too freethinking and strange. HBO Developing Bored To Death Movie, Reuniting Jason Schwartzman, Zach Galifianakis & Ted Danson

January 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bored-to-death-pic1HBO may have cancelled the TV series Bored To Death back in December 2011, but they still like it enough to put a thaterical feature film in development that hopes to reunite series stars Jason Schwartzman (Jonathan), Zach Galifianakis (Ray), and Ted Danson (George). Series creator Jonathan Ames is currently writing the screenplay.

THR says that in the film, ‘Jonathan, Ray, and George reunite to fight crime, commit crime, lose their minds and fail at love in a Bored to Death feature-length slapstick adventure.’

The three seasons of the TV series saw Jason Schwartzman as Jonathan Ames, a writer and amateur private detective who tried to solve crimes in Brooklyn, with the help of his friend Ray (Zach Galifianakis) and his editor George (Ted Danson). Although it was cancelled, many suggested that wa smore to do with Galifianakis’ burgeoning movie career and the increasing costs of making the show than because HBO didn’t like it – hence why they’re keen on a film version.

Paul Giamatti & Jason Schwartzman Join Saving Mr. Banks

July 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Paul Giamatti, Jason Schwartzman, and Ruth Wilson have joined Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks for director John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side), bolstering a cast that already includes Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks.

The movie is about Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson), who was courted for 14 years by Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) for the screen rights to her beloved novel, before she reluctantly agreed. After she didn’t approve of the 1964 classic’s animated sequences, she refused to sell another book to the studio.

Paul Giamatti is playing Ralph, P.L. Travers’ chauffeur when she spends time in Los Angeles. Jason Schwartzman will be Richard Sherman, the songwriter who wrote a number of tunes for Disney classics such as Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Ruth Wilson is the author’s mother in flashback scenes, along with Colin Farrell as P.L. Travers’ father, who inspired the Poppins character of Mr, Banks. (Source: Variety)

Moonrise Kingdom Trailer

January 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I’m never sure whether I like Wes Anderson movies or not. I think it’s probably most accurate to say that I’m bemused by them. However he has a lot of devoted fans who’ll be looking forward to his next effort, Moonrise Kingdom. From this first trailer, it seems we’re back into a world of whimsy and eccentricity, with plenty of stars along for the ride, including Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Jason Schwartzman. Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, Moonrise Kingdom tells the story of two 12-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing offshore, and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in more ways than anyone can handle. Bruce Willis plays the local sheriff. Edward Norton is a Khaki Scout troop leader. Bill Murray and Frances McDormand portray the young girl’s parents. It should be in cinemas this summer.
