Captain America & Thor Sequel Titles & Logos Revealed

July 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Marvel always goes big at Comic-Con and this year they certainly delivered, including revealing the titles for the sequels to Captain America and Thor, which will hit cinemas under the name Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Thor: The Dark World. Neither is exactly the most brilliant title we’ve ever heard, but they are suitably comic book-y.

The studio also released the title treatments for the films, which you can see above and below, as well as one for Iron Man 3. With that latter movie, Marvel also confirmed that Ben Kingsley will play the villainous Mandarin in the movie.

Thor: The Dark World hits cinemas November 8th, 2013, while Captain America: The Winter Soldier comes to theatres April 4th, 2014. Oh, and Iron Man 3 will be before both of those, on May 3rd, 2013.

Chris Hemsworth Goes In the Heart of the Sea

June 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Thanks to the success of The Avengers and Snow White and the Huntsman, Chris Hemsworth is just about the hottest new actor around at the moment. He’s now attached to star in the hot property In the Heart of the Sea, according to Deadline.

Charles Leavitt wrote the script, adapted from Nathanial Philbrick’s non-fiction book of the same name, which is based on the true events that inspired Herman Melville to write Moby Dick. The story revolves around a Nantucket whaling ship that was destroyed by a sperm whale in 1820. Only eight crew members were rescued alive, after being lost at sea for 90 days.

The project has been in development for several years, with directors such as Barry Levinson and Edward Zwick attached to direct at one point or another, although current no one is at the helm. There’s no studio currently attached, but DreamWorks reportedly has the inside track on landing the project, although there are still other studios vying for it.

Rush: Lauda Vs. Hunt Featurette – First look at Ron Howard’s F1 flick

May 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although F1 isn’t that popular in the US, Ron Howard is hoping the lure of fast cars and womanising men will lure in an audience over there for Rush, which follows the 1970s rivalry on Nikki Lauda and James Hunt (Daniel Bruhl and Chris Hemsworth), the former a more staid, professional man, while the latter loved the high life and fast women. The featurette above first aired on the BBC and gives us our first look at the film, which is shooting now for release next year.

Mads Mikkelsen Up For Thor 2 Baddie

May 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Casino Royale’s Danish bad guy Mads Mikkelsen, is in talks to play a bad guy in Thor 2, according to Variety, although at the moment there’s no news on exactly what character he might be playing.

We do know he’ll be a villain, but at the moment we don’t know who. If you’re worried this means there won’t be any Loki in the movie, don’t worry, there will be, but it appears he’ll have help causing trouble from Mikkelsen. Marevel has suggested it will be a pretty big role, upping the ante on the issues ol’ Thor has to deal with.

The film is scheduled for release November 15th, 2013, and should shoot later this summer

Avengers 2 Definitely In The Works

May 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In probably the least surprising development in the history of cinema, with The Avengers having made over $700 million in les than two weeks, Disney CEO Robert Iger has confirmed a sequel is in the works and that they hope to use the movie as a springboard for other Marvel franchises.

Iger told CNBC, “Marvel’s The Avengers isn’t just a film. It’s a franchise, from our perspective. It was helped by the success of the Iron Man movies and Captain America: The First Avenger. From the Avengers we get a chance to make Thor 2 and Iron Man 3 and hopefully another Marvel’s The Avengers movie.

“This one film, which was successful, over $700 million, as you said, as of last night, is going to get a number of other films and franchises. We see tremendous interest in products and in games for Marvel’s The Avengers. We have an ability to leverage what was a very fun film done by a great group of film makers into something much bigger for the company and the effect will be prolonged and that’s very, very exciting for us.”

However just because Iger says it, doesn’t mean he’s not going to have difficulty getting the full team back together. While the likes of Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth have lengthy contracts that guarantee their participation in individual sequels and The Avengers 2, Robert Downey’s Jr. contract only runs through Iron Man 3. A new deal would have to be worked out for him, and if they want Joss Whedon back, he’ll also need a new contract. As Marvel is well known for refusing to pay as much as many others in the industry are prepared to, it may prove tough getting both of them back.

Avengers Smashes US Opening Weekend Record

May 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

This weekend exactly 10 years ago, an adaptation of a Marvel comic became the very first movie to make $100 million is a single weekend. That film was Spider-man and now, a decade on, another Marvel property has become the first movie to power past $200 million in only three days in the US, smashing numerous records in the process.

The film took $200.3 million on its US release, which is by far the biggest opening ever, ahead of last year’s Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2’s $169 million. It became the fastest film to $100 million, $150 million and $200 million, took the biggest Saturday ($69.7 million) and Sunday ($50.1 milion) gross ever and had the highest per-theatre average ever for a nationwide release of $46,057.

Perhaps just as impressively its already beaten the lifetime US take of Thor, Captain America and the Incredible Hulk, and will almost certainly pass both Iron Man films by next weekend. It’s a massive vindication of Marvel’s plan to make a series of interconnected movies and will ensure we see many more movies featuring the characters in the future.

The only bad news what that The Avengers dominance meant all the other movies in the top 10 took a big hit, but cinema owners are unlikely to be complaining, and will hope this is only the beginning of a huge summer. Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of May 4th-6th 2012.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Avengers $200.3 $200.3
2 Think Like A Man $8.0 $72.0
3 The Hunger Games $5.7 $380.7
4 The Lucky One $5.5 $47.9
5 The Pirates! Band Of Misfits $5.4 $18.5
6 The Five-Year Engagement $5.1 $19.2
7 The Raven $2.5 $12.0
8 Safe $2.4 $12.8
9 Chimpanzee $2.3 $23.0

The Avengers New York Tribeca Screening Red Carpet Video

May 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Stars from the summer’s most hotly anticipated film celebrated imagination at the New York premiere of ‘The Avengers’. Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Cobie Smulders and Tom Hiddleston reflected on their experience of making the film and bringing the comic book series to the big screen. Bombay Sapphire announces the launch of their Imagination Series Filmmakers Competition at Tribeca Film Festival this week, hosting the exclusive after-parties of Emily Blunt’s ‘Your Sister’s Sister’, Chris Rock’s ‘2 Days In New York’ and the closing premiere, summer blockbuster ‘The Avengers’.

To celebrate filmmakers around the world, Bombay Sapphire, in association with Tribeca Film Festival, is offering budding filmmakers the chance to make their own short film, using their imagination to interpret Oscar-winner Geoffrey Fletcher’s short film script. From the 26th of April, budding filmmakers can view the script at www.imaginationseries.com and can submit their interpretation of the Geoffrey’s script on this site from the 8th of May 2012. A global judging panel, including Geoffrey Fletcher and industry leaders put together by the Tribeca Film Festival, will select five winners from a shortlist of entries who will then go on to produce and direct their own individual films and view these at a star-studded international premiere early 2013.

David Koepp Writing Snow White and the Huntsman Sequel

April 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Universal must have confidence that its action fairytale flick, Snow White And The Huntsman, will be a success, as while the movie isn’t released until June 1st, Deadline reports that the studio is already in talks with screenwriter David Koepp (Jurassic Park) to write a sequel to the revisionist tale. The word is that Universal wants to fast-track the sequel, and is trying to secure director Rupert Sanders to make it his next project.

In Snow White And The Huntsman, Kristen Stewart stars as Snow, who teams up with the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) who was originally sent to kill her, so they can take down the Evil Queen (Charlize Theron) stepmother. While the film retains many elements of the original fairytale, the action and scale has been amped up significantly. The three primary actors are believed to have deals in place already to return for a follow-up.

It isn’t known when the sequel might shoot, but presuming the first film is a success, Universal wants to the sequel as soon as possible.

Avengers Assemble (Cinema)

April 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Robert Downey Jr.
Director: Joss Whedon
Running Time: 143 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: April 26th, 2012

After years of build up, it’s finally here. While fanboys have long worried The Avengers (or Avengers Assemble as Disney wants us to call it in the UK, apparently because Brits are incapable of telling the difference between a 1960s TV show and a 2012 superhero movie) couldn’t live up to the hype, Joss Whedon has delivered.

It’s an action packed, rip-roaring juggernaut of a film, which pulls off the impressive trick of perfectly balancing a large ensemble cast, so that it feels as if everyone is there for a reason and has their own character arc. [Read more…]
