Saving Private Ryan Writer Reworking Thor 2

January 11, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Thor 2 is already on its third director, but assuming Game Of Thrones helmer Alan Taylor stays the course, things are moving ahead for a summer shoot, with a late 2013 release date already set for the superhero follow-up.

Now the script is getting a bit of a rewrite, as according to Deadline Robert Rodat has been hired to give things a bit of a punch up. He’s best known for scripting Saving Private Ryan, but he also has credits on films such as Fly Away Home and The Patriot, and created the TV series Falling Skies.

Rodat will now be polishing the script (originally written by Don Payne), but we don’t have any info of what direction the post-Avengers story will be taking. Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman should both be back to star.

Alan Taylor Tapped To Helm Thor 2

December 27, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Getting someone to direct Thor 2 has proven surprisingly tough, with both Brian Kirk (Game Of Thrones) and Patty Jenkins (Monster) signing up and then swiftly stepping aside due to creative differences with Marvel.

Just a few days after Jenkins left, Marvel had narrowed down the playing field to just two men, Alan Taylor and Daniel Minahan, both of whom had directed episodes of Game of Thrones, which certainly gives a hint at what they’re hoping for from the sequel.

Now THR reports that Marvel has chosen Alan Taylor and he’s about to enter talks with the studio to direct Thor 2. Taylor has already made one movie, Palookaville, and he has also helmed episodes of Mad Men, Nurse Jackie, and Boardwalk Empire.

Marvel is keen to get a director firmly on board as they still want to meet a November 15th, 2013 release date, so they’ll be hoping that not only can they sign Taylor, but that he actually stays with the project until it’s made.

BGPS’s Advent Calendar Of Buff Blokes: Day 23 – Chris & Liam Hemsworth

December 23, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It seems the sensationally sexy Hemsworth brothers are taking it in turn as to who’ll be the most famous. Chris started out first, taking a role in Home & Away from 2004-2007. Then younger bro Liam popped up in Neighbours before getting a Hollywood break in 2009 with Knowing opposite. The following year he appeared in The Last Song, which led to a high profile relationship with Miley Cyrus.

After that though, Liam seemed to be stalling, which allowed Chris to hit back with a role in Star Trek. He then got a huge break playing the title role in Thor. However it’s 2012 that’ll be the real test of which brother is gonna be the biggest star, as Liam has The Hunger Games and The Expendables 2, while Chris will star in Cabin In The Woods, Red Dawn, Snow White And The Huntsman and a little movie called The Avengers.

To help you decide whether you think 28-year-old Chris or 21-year-old Liam deserves to be higher up the a-list, I’ve put together an advent calendar gallery of the brothers looking as fine as they can be. After all, nothing says Christmas more than hot guys. For my part, I reckon Liam wins on looks, but Chris is probably the better all round package. [Read more…]

Natalie Portman Reportedly Upset Over Patty Jenkins’ Thor 2 Firing

December 15, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Whenever a director leaves a project, the official line is always that it’s a mutual decision and everyone’s happy, even if what’s actually happened is far more fractious. Last week it was revealed that Marvel and director Patty Jenkins had parted ways due to ‘creative differences’ over Thor 2.

It now seems that rather than the mutual deicision it was painted as, Jenkins was actually unceremoniously fired from the movie, a move that’s upset star Natalie Portman, who’d lobbied to get Jenkins hired in the first place. According to THR, Portman is thinking of taking time off from acting to be with her baby son, but had re-engaged with Thor 2 (which she’s contractually obliged to appear in) due to Jenkins’ involvement. The news of the director’s firing went public before Portman had been told and she’s apparently very upset about the whole thing.

Marvel has gotten itself a reputation for being a bit cavalier with how it treats talent, low-balling actors on what they’d usually expect to get paid for big movies and making it tough for directors to bring their own vision to movies, but it’s gotten away with it because the films are so successful. However they do apparently want to smooth things over with Portman and are engaging her in choosing who replaces Jenkins.

There are also divergent ideas over why Patty was fired in the first place, with the Marvel camp suggesting it was because she wasn’t moving decisively enough and they were worried they’d miss the release date, while her side feels it may have been because she was too decisive and that the studio had decided her very particular vision for the film wasn’t what they wanted after all (so it was creative differences, but a full-on firing, not a parting of the ways).

Many are particularly upset she’s out as it would have made her the first female director of a big tentpole superhero movie. It doesn’t appear Marvel has any women on the shortlist to replace her.

Marvel Zeroes In On Thor 2 Directors

December 10, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

You would have thought that directing Thor 2 would be one of the most sought after jobs in Hollywood, especially as Marvel is going after little known names for the job. However it appears the studio wants to keep absolute control, which is causing issues and has already seen both Brian Kirk and Patty Jenkins bail on the movie (the latter leaving just last week).

However with a November 2013 release date already set, they need to get a director on board pretty soon. THR reports that Marvel is eyeing TV directors Alan Taylor and Daniel Minahan for the Thor 2 job, and that they’re also looking to bring on a new writer for the project.

Both directors have feature films under their belts, Alan Taylor with Palookaville and Daniel Minahan with Series 7: The Contenders, but both are primarily known for their TV work. Alan Taylor has directed episodes of Mad Men, Nurse Jackie, and Boardwalk Empire, while Daniel Minahan has directed for True Blood, The Good Wife, and Grey’s Anatomy. They have both directed episodes of the HBO series Game of Thrones, a show Marvel seems to be seeing as a template for Thor 2, as Brian Kirk also worked on that series.

There’s no info on who is the frontrunner, but expect to hear someone has been hired soon.

The Cabin In The Woods Trailer – Joss Whedon’s creepy new trip

December 6, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Some people have suggested this trailer reveals a big twist in The Cabin In The Woods, but the truth is more that it shows this isn’t just you typical creepy house horror tale and there’s a lot more to it than that – as you’d expect from writer/producer Joss Whedon and director Drew Goddard (who wrote Cloverfield). The film’s been severely delayed due to MGM bankruptcy, but it’ll finally see the lit of day next April. In the movie, a group of friends go to a remote place in the woods, where things quickly turn terrifiying, in a film that’s keen to turn the horror genre inside-out.

Great New Cabin In The Wood Poster Emerges

December 2, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

The Joss Whedon written and produced Cabin In The Woods hasn’t had much luck. Shot over two years ago, it got trapped in the debacle that surrounded MGM’s bankruptcy (along with the likes of the Red Dawn remake) and so has taken a ridiculously long time to get to cinemas. However now Lionsgate has taken over distribution and an April 13th, 2012 release has been set.

AICN has debuted a superb new poster for the movie, which you can see about.

The film stars Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth (it was shot pre-Thor, which should give you some idea how long it’s been waiting to emerge from the MGM mire), Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams, Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford. As the title suggests it sees a group of young people heading to an isolated cabin, but things don’t go too well for them once they get there.

Orange BAFTA Rising Star Longlist Announced – Vote For Your Sexiest!

November 25, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ok, ok, we know, the Orange BAFTA Rising Star Award isn’t about who’s the sexiest, it’s about honouring an up and coming young actor whose somewhat broken through in the last 12 months. Let’s face it though, they’re all hotties, and as this award is open to the public vote, you can pretty much guarantee that most of the votes won’t be given on pure acting merit (hence the impressive wooden Kristen Stewart winning a couple of years ago).

Of course, if you do decide to head over to the Orange Wednesday’s Rising Star Award site to say who you want to win, we recommend going for talent, but if you end up ticking Chris Hemsworth’s box just because he’s cute, nobody is going to know (I’m thinking of going fo Jessica Chastain, who put in remarkable performances in the likes of The Help and The Tree Of Life).

The longlist has been announced, and you can see all the entrants in our gallery below (click the pics to make them bigger). The first round of voting is now open, which will be used to whittle it down to a final five, who’ll be announced on January 11th. Orange customers will then be able to vote, and the winner will get their gong at the BAFTA Film Awards in February.
