When We Rise Trailer – First look at Gus Van Sant & Dustin Lance Black’s epic gay right mini-series

November 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

when-we-rise-trailer-slideWow, who thought a gay rights mini-series could get the American alt-right steamed up so quickly. Actually forget that, they’re sitting around waiting to get steamed up and ridiculously outraged by things, while coming up with bizarre conspiracy theories around it, all the time. You just need to take a look through the comments for the trailer for When We Rise to see that those who love to be angry about stuff in racist, anti-Semitic, misogynistic, homophobic and generally aggressive ways (while whining about how white men are the most oppressed people in the history of humanity), are not happy about it. But you know what? Screw ’em.

When We Rise is an eight-part mini-series due to air next February on ABC in the US, which chronicles the rise of the gay-rights movement from the Stonewall riots to the triumphs of recent year – although with the election of Trump, it’s likely to also be a timely reminder of the need to keep fighting. Written by Oscar-winner Dustin Lance Black and produced and part-directed by Gus Van Sant, it is perhaps particularly angering the alt-right as it is probably the highest-profile and biggest gay-themed drama US TV has ever produced.

It’s also got a great cast, including Guy Pearce, Mary-Louise Parker, Rachel Griffiths, Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donnell, Denis O’Hare, David Hyde Pierce, Michael K. Williams, Charlie Caver and Ivory Aquino.

Black has commented, “It’s been the honor of my life to research and craft these stories of family, diversity and equality over the past three years. To have collaborators of this caliber sign on to help bring these stories to life is a tremendous vote of confidence, and I hope a testament to the relevancy and necessity of our continued march toward justice for all.”

Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donnell, Denis O’Hare and David Hyde Pierce Join When We Rise Gay Rights Miniseries

May 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Whoopi-GoldbergA few weeks ago, the likes of Guy Pearce, Mary-Louise Parker, Rachel Griffiths were announced for major role in Gus Van Sant and Dustin Lance Black’s major, 7-part gay rights miniseries, When We Rise. Now some more big names have signed on, with Deadline reporting that Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donnell, Denis O’Hare, David Hyde Pierce, Michael K. Williams and Ivory Aquino are set for the show. Williams and Aquino will appear in larger roles, while the others are described as ‘guest stars’.

The show chronicles the personal and political struggles, setbacks and triumphs of a diverse family of LGBT men and women who helped pioneer one of the last legs of the US Civil Rights movement from its turbulent infancy in the 20th century to the successes of today. The period piece tells the history of the gay rights movement, starting with the Stonewall Riots in 1969.

Guy Pearce will star as LGBT activist Cleve Jones, who joined the gay liberation movement in 1972 and was befriended by pioneer gay rights leader Harvey Milk. Parker will play women’s rights leader Roma Guy, who co-founded the San Francisco Women’s Building, and as a public health commissioner worked with others to bring healthcare access to all San Franciscans. Griffiths will play her wife, social justice activist Diane.

Deadline adds that, ‘Williams will play African American Community Organizer Ken Jones. Aquino is transgender activist Cecilia Chung. Goldberg is Pat Norman, the first openly gay employee of the San Francisco Health Department, O’Donnell plays Del Martin, co-founder of the first Lesbian organization in the country, O’Hare is Jim Foster, openly gay Democratic party organizer, and Pierce will play Dr. Jones, Cleve’s father.’

The series reunites Gus Van Sant and Dustin Lance Black after the Oscar winning success of Milk. Van Sant will also direct the two-hour first episode, both will also produce the other episodes. Shooting is currently underway on the ABC miniseries in Vancouver and San Francisco.

David Hyde Pierce Talks About The Impressive Spread Of Gay Marriage In The US

December 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

david-hyde-pierceDavid Hyde Pierce is coming back to TV with a run in The Good Wife. To mark that, he showed up on Larry King Now for an interview. He’s done surprisingly little on-screen work in the 10 years since his multi-award winning turn in Frasier, instead concentrating on theatre, and in 2008 he married his partner Brian Cosgrove in California.

On Larry King he spoke about his surprise at how fast marriage equality has spread in the US since then (it’s not a shock he’s surprised considering that his own marriage had to survive the issues surrounding Prop 8).

He says, ‘I’m amazed at the sort of domino effect with same-sex marriage happening throughout the states. It had to do with visibility (and) all the brave people who fought for marriage.’

Pierce adds that it wasn’t just those in the midst of the battle who were important, as much of the change has been due to ‘just the average American looking at these people or looking at friends or family who are gay or lesbian and realising (gay marriage bans are) kind of hypocritical…’

He continues, ‘It’s kind of hypocritical to say, “Oh, I love you dearly, you’re my best friend. Would I let you marry the person you love? Well, sorry, no”. Those conversations used to happen a lot, and they happen less and less now…’

‘It just seems more important to let people live their lives. It seems in a way, more American.’

You can take a look at the clip below. [Read more…]

David Hyde Pierce Is Turning Broadway Director With Neil Patrick Harris’ Hubby Starring

October 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

david-hyde-pierceDavid Hyde Pierce won a Tony for starring in a musical, picking up the award in 1997 for Curtains. Now he’s stepping off the stage and for the first time directing a musical on Broadway as THR reports he’ll be the creative force behind It Shoulda Been You when it opens in the spring. We’ll have to wait an see whether Tony starts knocking this time around.

He’s already lined up a great cast, including NPH’s husband, David Burtka, who’ll star alongside Sierra Boggess as a bride and groom who get caught in the middle of a culture clash collision when their overbearing mothers, played by Tyne Daly and Harriet Harris, try to deal with a wedding where the bride is Jewish and the groom a Catholic. Other roles will be filled by Edward Hibbert, Lisa Howard and Steve Rosen.

The show was a great success at the George Street Playhouse in New Jersey in 2011 (despite somewhat mixed reviews), and is now moving to Broadway’s Brooks Atkinson Theatre, with an April 14th opening night set.

It’s perhaps not too surprising Pierce got the job, as his husband Brian Hargrove, wrote the book and lyrics for the show (Hargrove has previously written for TV shows such as Titus and Caroline in the City), while Barbara Anselmi came up with the score.

Burtka will presumably head for rehearsals after he’s completed his recently announced role opposite Neil Patrick Harris in American Horror Story: Freak Show. The duo have been rumoured for the show for quite a while. It’s believed they were initially offered larger roles that they couldn’t fit into their schedule (and had also previously been in talks to play a gay couple in the first season of the show) but TVLine says they’ll now show up towards the end of the latest season. NPH will be in the ‘final two episodes as a chameleon salesman, while Burtka will turn up in the season finale in what I’m told is a sexy storyline with Jessica Lange’s batty chanteuse.’ With Matt Bomer also showing up in one of the episode, Freak Show is certainly shaping up to be something special.
