When We Rise Trailer – First look at Gus Van Sant & Dustin Lance Black’s epic gay right mini-series

November 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

when-we-rise-trailer-slideWow, who thought a gay rights mini-series could get the American alt-right steamed up so quickly. Actually forget that, they’re sitting around waiting to get steamed up and ridiculously outraged by things, while coming up with bizarre conspiracy theories around it, all the time. You just need to take a look through the comments for the trailer for When We Rise to see that those who love to be angry about stuff in racist, anti-Semitic, misogynistic, homophobic and generally aggressive ways (while whining about how white men are the most oppressed people in the history of humanity), are not happy about it. But you know what? Screw ’em.

When We Rise is an eight-part mini-series due to air next February on ABC in the US, which chronicles the rise of the gay-rights movement from the Stonewall riots to the triumphs of recent year – although with the election of Trump, it’s likely to also be a timely reminder of the need to keep fighting. Written by Oscar-winner Dustin Lance Black and produced and part-directed by Gus Van Sant, it is perhaps particularly angering the alt-right as it is probably the highest-profile and biggest gay-themed drama US TV has ever produced.

It’s also got a great cast, including Guy Pearce, Mary-Louise Parker, Rachel Griffiths, Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donnell, Denis O’Hare, David Hyde Pierce, Michael K. Williams, Charlie Caver and Ivory Aquino.

Black has commented, “It’s been the honor of my life to research and craft these stories of family, diversity and equality over the past three years. To have collaborators of this caliber sign on to help bring these stories to life is a tremendous vote of confidence, and I hope a testament to the relevancy and necessity of our continued march toward justice for all.”

Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Equals (DVD Review)

October 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Nicholas Hoult, Kristen Stewart, Guy Pearce
Director: Drake Doremus
Running Time: 101 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: October 3rd 2016 (UK)

Following a devastating war that has destroyed most of the Earth’s habitable surface, one of two remaining populations now lives in a sterile world, having completely suppressed and eradicated their emotions. However, sometimes the methods used to rid them of their primitive urges don’t work, and people end up with ‘Switched On Syndrome’, where their emotions begin to rise.

Silas (Nicholas Hoult) discovers that he is ‘infected’, and that he will eventually reach Stage 3, where he’ll be carted off and given a ‘death scenario’. He starts to fall for co-worker Nia (Kristen Stewart), who he discovers also has the ‘disease’ but is hiding it. Holding The Man (Cinema Review)

June 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Anthony LaPaglia, Craig Stott, Guy Pearce, Kerry Fox, Ryan Corr
Director: Neil Armfield
Running Time: 127 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 3rd 2016 (UK)

Holding The Man is evidence, if it were needed, of how difficult it is for gay-themed movies to crossover into the mainstream. Despite glowing reviews and a cast including Aussie luminaries such as Guy Pearce, Anthony LaPaglia and (briefly) Geoffrey Rush, as well as Kerry Fox (who’s actually a New Zealander), the movie has largely managed to fly under the radar, and a year on from its Australian debut it’s still waiting for a US release date.

However, it’s now arrived in the UK thanks to Peccadillo Pictures. Based on Tim Conigrave’s bestselling memoir, the film covers a roughly 15-year period, starting in the mid-70s when Tim (Ryan Corr) is in a Catholic high school and first begins hanging out with his crush, John (Craig Scott). It doesn’t take them long before they admit that they like each more than just friends. Inevitably their teenage love faces obstacles when the school and then their parents discover what is going on. Equals Trailer – Nicholas Hoult & Kristen Stewart aren’t allowed to fall in love

April 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Equals-slide2It’s forbidden love time for Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart in a dystopian future. Indeed, they’re not even meant to be able to fall in love in Equals, which has just released its full trailer.

In the film, Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart live in a gloomy, sterile world, where emotion has been outlawed and is virtually non-existent. However, the human spirit won’t take that lying down, and some people get a disease known as ‘Switched On Syndrome’, where they begin to have feelings. As a result, Hoult and Stewart start to fall in love.

Guy Pearce, Jacki Weaver, Bel Powley, Kate Lyn Sheil, and Claudia Kim also start, with a summer release expected. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Guy Pearce, Mary-Louise Parker, Rachel Griffiths & More Will Star In Gay Rights Miniseries When We Rise

March 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

guy-pearceA few weeks ago screenwriter Dustin Lance Black was talking about how much he was going to miss fiance Tom Daley while he was away helping make make the planned gay-right mini-series, When We Rise. However, while it seems shooting was imminent, no cast had been announced on the Gus Van Sant directed show.

Now that’s changed, as it’s been announced that the ABC backed even series will feature the likes of Guy Pearce, Mary-Louise Parker, Rachel Griffiths, Austin McKenzie, Emily Skeggs, Jonathan Majors, and Fiona Dourif.

Variety reports that the show, ‘chronicles the personal and political struggles, setbacks and triumphs of a diverse family of LGBT men and women who helped pioneer one of the last legs of the U.S. Civil Rights movement from its turbulent infancy in the 20th century to the once unfathomable successes of today. The period piece tells the history of the gay rights movement, starting with the Stonewall Riots in 1969.

Pearce will star as LGBT activist Cleve Jones, who joined the gay liberation movement in 1972 and was befriended by pioneer gay rights leader Harvey Milk. He founded the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt and led the National March for Equality in 2009. Parker will play women’s rights leader Roma Guy, who co-founded the San Francisco Women’s Building, and as a public health commissioner worked with others to bring healthcare access to all San Franciscans. Griffiths will play her wife, social justice activist Diane, who joined the Women’s Movement in the 1970s in San Francisco, co-founded the Women’s Building and has worked as an HIV/AIDS nurse and social justice activist at San Francisco General Hospital for 33 years.’

The series reunites Gus Van Sant and Dustin Lance Black after the Oscar winning success of Milk. Van Sant will also direct the two-hour first episode, both will also produce the other seven episodes.

Black comments, “It’s been the honor of my life to research and craft these stories of family, diversity and equality over the past three years. To have collaborators of this caliber sign on to help bring these stories to life is a tremendous vote of confidence, and I hope a testament to the relevancy and necessity of our continued march toward justice for all.”

Genius Trailer – Colin Firth plays the man who helped discover Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald & Thomas Wolfe

March 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

geniusGenius has been in the works for a long time – Colin Firth first attached himself to it back in 2012 – but it’s only now that it’s in the can and the first trailer for the movie has arrived. While a movie about a book editor doesn’t sound that interesting, as it’s about a man who helped the likes of Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald get published, it’s certainly got potential.

The film doesn’t concentrate on either of those authors though, instead focusing on the birth of Thomas Wolfe as a literary force.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Academy Award-nominated screenwriter JOHN LOGAN (Gladiator, The Aviator, Hugo, Skyfall) and acclaimed, Tony Award-winning director MICHAEL GRANDAGE in his feature film debut, comes Genius, a stirring drama about the complex friendship and transformative professional relationship between the world-renowned book editor Maxwell Perkins (who discovered F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway) and the larger-than-life literary giant Thomas Wolfe. Based on the biography “Max Perkins: Editor of Genius” by A. SCOTT BERG, Genius stars COLIN FIRTH as Perkins, JUDE LAW as Wolfe, NICOLE KIDMAN as Aline Bernstein, a costume designer sharing a tumultuous relationship with Wolfe, LAURA LINNEY as Louise Perkins, Max’s wife and a talented playwright, GUY PEARCE as F. Scott Fitzgerald and DOMINIC WEST as Ernest Hemingway.’

The film will be out later this year. [Read more…]

Robert Pattinson & Carice Van Houten Join Guy Pearce In Brimstone

February 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Robert-PattinsonThere might have been a bit of a bromance on the set of The Rover, as Robert Pattinson and Guy Pearce are reteaming for Brimstone. Pearce and Wasikowska have previously been announced, but it’s only now we’ve heard that Pattinson & Carice Van Houten will join them.

The movie is a suspenseful tale of guilt and retribution that unfolds at the end of the 19th century.  It’s described as ‘a dark, violent and epic western about a young woman (and her family) whose lives change drastically when a diabolical preacher comes to town. From the moment the new reverend climbs the pulpit, Liz knows she and her family are in great danger.’

Martin Koolhoven, best known for his work on Winter in Wartime, is writing and directing the movie, which is set to shoot in May. The film is currently looking for buyers at the Berlin Film Festival.

New The Rover Trailer – Robert Pattinson & Guy Pearce go post-apocalyptic

April 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Things aren’t going well in Australia in The Rover, as the country has suffered a massive financial crisis that sent many heading for desert mines in the hope of finding their fortune.

Guy Pearce stars as Eric, a drifter living outside normal society. When his car is stolen by a gang of thugs, he enlists the help of Reynolds (Robert Pattinson), a gang member who was abandoned during the chaos.

Now a new trailer for the movie has arrived.

Director David Michod previously commented, “It’s like a new gold rush. Where people from all corners of the world have come out to the desert to scrape out an existence. Petty criminals and miscreants and hustlers. The basic story is really quite elemental. You’ve got a really dark, dangerous, murderous person in Guy’s character, and in Rob’s character you have a quite troubled and damaged, but beautiful and naïve, soul.”

The movie should hit cinemas later this year. [Read more…]

Guy Pearce Will Have A Black Mass With Johnny Depp

March 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

guy-pearceAfter it all fell apart last year, Black Mass is back on track with Johnny Depp signed up once more for the lead role, and Joel Edgerton co-starring, with Scott Cooper set to direct. Now Variety reports another great actor has signed on, as Guy Pearce will also star.

The film is a biopic of James ‘Whitey’ Bulger (Johnny Depp), a Boston criminal who ended up becoming an FBI informant, with the help of his longtime friend and FBI agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) and his brother (Guy Pearce), who was the former President of the Massachussets State Senate. However Whitey didn’t completely turn good guy, as his tips to the feds were mainly about getting rid of his mob competition.

When Connolly tipped Bulger off that the feds were planning on double-crossing him, the criminal went into hiding for more than a decade, rising to the top of the FBI’s Most Wanted list before he was eventually caught in 2011 while hiding out in Santa Monica, California.

Bulger served as the inspiration for Jack Nicholson’s Frank Costello in The Departed and Pete Postlethwaite’s Fergus ‘Fergie’ Colm in The Town.

Filming is set to start this spring in Boston, with an October 2015 release date set.
