Following a devastating war that has destroyed most of the Earth’s habitable surface, one of two remaining populations now lives in a sterile world, having completely suppressed and eradicated their emotions. However, sometimes the methods used to rid them of their primitive urges don’t work, and people end up with ‘Switched On Syndrome’, where their emotions begin to rise.

Silas (Nicholas Hoult) discovers that he is ‘infected’, and that he will eventually reach Stage 3, where he’ll be carted off and given a ‘death scenario’. He starts to fall for co-worker Nia (Kristen Stewart), who he discovers also has the ‘disease’ but is hiding it. They know that if their relationship is discovered there will be serious repercussions, but they cannot help but fall deeper in love. [Read more…]

Equals Trailer – Nicholas Hoult & Kristen Stewart aren’t allowed to fall in love

April 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Equals-slide2It’s forbidden love time for Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart in a dystopian future. Indeed, they’re not even meant to be able to fall in love in Equals, which has just released its full trailer.

In the film, Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart live in a gloomy, sterile world, where emotion has been outlawed and is virtually non-existent. However, the human spirit won’t take that lying down, and some people get a disease known as ‘Switched On Syndrome’, where they begin to have feelings. As a result, Hoult and Stewart start to fall in love.

Guy Pearce, Jacki Weaver, Bel Powley, Kate Lyn Sheil, and Claudia Kim also start, with a summer release expected. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Equals Teaser Trailer – Nicholas Hoult & Kristen Stewart have an outlawed dystopian romance

February 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

equals-nicholas-houltOne day it would be nice to have a movie that was utopian rather than dystopian, where the future is actually a good place and science has helped us all out. But I suppose there’s more drama in suggesting things have gone wrong. In Equals at least romance survives, even if it’s not meant to.

Director Drake Doremus has made his name with romantic drama such as Breathe In, Like Crazy, but it seems he’s trying something different with the sci-fi project Equals. Now the cast is coming together as Deadline reports that Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult are attached to star.

No plot details have been revealed, although the screenplay is being written by Nathan Parker (Moon, Blitz). Doremus has described is as his biggest project yet.

Indian Paintbrush is providing the financing, with Steven M. Rales producing. It isn’t clear when it will shoot.

Breathe In (Blu-ray)

October 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones, Amy Ryan, Mackenzie Davis
Director: Drake Doremus
Running Time: 96 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 7th 2013

I loved Drake Doremus’ Like Crazy, which managed the rare feat of making a love story feel fresh, real, new and passionate. I had high hope for Breathe In, but unfortunately while there are some things to admire, the overall feeling is that the film is slightly tedious and contrived.

Sophie (Felicity Jones) is a foreign exchange student who arrives in upstate New York to stay with Keith (Guy Pearce), his wife Megan (Amy Ryan) and daughter Lauren (Mackenzie Davis). Keith and Sophie share a love of music, and slowly their musical connection develop into feelings for one another, but neither is sure whether they should act upon them. [Read more…]

Ah, young love. Like Crazy is the sort of film that will either have you reach for the sick bucket, or get you blubbing in the first 10 minutes due to the aching love on display. Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones are Jacob and Anna, who meet at an LA university while the British Anna is in the US on a student visa.

Falling deeply in love, Anna overstays the limit of her Visa and discovers that after she pops back to the UK for a short visit, she’s now banned from going back to the States. Their passion still burns, but with both of them building lives for themselves in different parts of the world and Jacob unable or unwilling to move to Britain, keeping their relationship going becomes increasingly difficult.
