Rhys Ifans Takes On Dylan Thomas Biopic, With John Malkovich & Diego Luna Co-Starring

May 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rhys-IfansToday marks the start of a festival in Wales to celebrate 100 years since the birth of playwright and poet Dylan Thomas. Rhys Ifans has already been a big part of marking the centenary, and now he’s taking it further as Variety reports that he’ll play the Under Milk Wood writer in the indie drama Dominion.

John Malkovich and Diego Luna have also signed up for the movie, with Steven Bernstein (Decoding Annie Parker) directing from his own script.

The film will focus on the events surrounding the last days before his untimely death at the age of 39 in 1953 in New York, which included multiple visits to the White Horse Tavern in Greenwich Village.’

Thomas was ill when he got to New York, although there’s been some speculation over exactly what killed him. The official reason was pneumonia, with pressure on the brain and a fatty liver as contributing factors. He was also given morphine before he was admitted to hospital, which is known to have affected his already difficult breathing – and some feel it’s more likely that killed him than pneumonia on its own. He was also an alcoholic although officially this didn’t contribute to his death.

The movie is due to start shooting later this month.

Full Casa de mi Padre Trailer Hits

January 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Will Ferrell deciding to make a Spanish-language movie always sounded like a strange proposition and that opinion is unlikely to be changed by the trailer for Casa De Mi Padre. The film, made in the overblown, melodramatic style of Latin American telenovelas, see Ferrell as Armando Alvarez, who has lived and worked on his father’s ranch in Mexico his entire life. As the ranch encounters financial difficulties, Armando’s younger brother Raul (Diego Luna) shows up with his new fiancé, Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez). It seems that Raul’s success as an international businessman means the ranch’s troubles are over, as he pledges to settle all debts his father has incurred. But when Armando falls for Sonia, and Raul’s business dealings turn out to be less than legit, all hell breaks loose as they find themselves in a war with Mexico’s most feared drug lord, the mighty Onza (Gael Garcia Bernal). The film should hit cinemas later this year.

Casa di mi Padre Teaser – Who is Armando Alvarez?

December 19, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s very bizarre, but Will Ferrell is going Spanish for Casa Di Mi Padre (House Of My Father), and now a very bried new teaser for the movie has been released, asking ‘Who is Armando Alvarez?’ In the movie, Armando Alvarez (Will Ferrell) has lived and worked on his father’s ranch in Mexico his entire life. As the ranch faces financial strains, Armando’s younger brother Raul (Diego Luna) shows up with his new fiancée, Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez) and pledges to settle all his father’s debts. It seems that Raul’s success as an international businessman means the ranch’s troubles are over, but when Armando falls for Sonia, and Raul’s business dealings turn out to be less than legit, the Alvarez family finds themselves in a full-out war with Mexico’s most feared drug lord, the mighty Onza (Gael Garcia Bernal). It’s due out in the spring.

Milk (Blu-ray)

November 1, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Emile Hirsch, Diego Luna, James Franco
Director: Gus Van Sant
Running Time: 130 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 8th, 2009

Only a few years ago, the idea of Hollywood making a movie almost completely peopled by gay characters would have been virtually unthinkable. However it seems Brokeback Mountain might have opened a few doors, as not long after that film came out both Gus Van Sant and Bryan Singer announced they’d be making movies based on the life of Harvey Milk, who in 1977 became the first openly gay man to be elected to political office in California. However Van Sant’s film was the first out of the gate, while Singer’s has now fallen by the wayside. That’s probably not a bad thing, as it’s difficult to imagine Singer’s take on the subject being better than Milk. [Read more…]
