Are Two Star Wars Rogue One Characters In A Gay Relationship?

December 19, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In what is fast becoming a new Star Wars tradition, speculation has emerged that two of the male characters in Rogue One are in a relationship – although one that’s implied rather than shown. Some on the web have wondered whether the closeness between Chirrut Îmwe (Donnie Yen) and Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen) goes beyond friendship, and whether they’re actually gay.

It mirrors the speculation last year with The Force Awakens that Finn (John Boyega) Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) had a romantic interest in one another. With both films though, there’s nothing in the movie that definitively points to it being gay, rather than just a close male friendship.

However, director Gareth Edwards was asked about it, Yahoo! Movies, “I don’t mind people reading into [Chirrut and Baze’s relationship]. I think that’s all good. Who knows? You’d have to speak to them”.

One of the movie’s villains, Ben Mendelsohn, adds, “I think Chirrut and Baze are an enormously entertaining part of this film. I found them thoroughly enjoyable. Any [gay] subtext, I think, is certainly … people like to enjoy these films on many different levels, and if people are enjoying it on that level – that’s it.”

Force Awakens director JJ Abrams has previously said that he hopes the franchise can find room for explicitly LGBT characters, although the likelihood of that being Finn and Poe – despite Oscar Isaac mischievously hinting – still seems prety unlikely.

First Pic From Star Wars: Rogue One Emerges, While Colin Trevorrow Will Direct Episode IX

August 16, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-wars-rogue-one-pic1Having spent billions to buy Lucasfilm, it’s not surprising Disney wants to make their money back. They’re certainly investing vast amounts of money to make the most of their investment, and they’re doing so before the first new Star Wars film has even arrived in cinemas.

JJ Abrams’ The Force Awakens, which is Episode VII of the central story, will arrive later this year, and another film based in the Star Wars universe, Rogue One, is already in production. As well as that, standalone movies about the likes of a young Han Solo are already being developed, and screenwriters are hard at work on Episodes VIII & IX.

Rian Johnson has previously been announced to direct Episode VIII, and now Disney has confirmed rumours that Jurassic World helmer Colin Trevorrow will take on Episode IX. While production won’t begin for a few years, Trevorrow is heading to Lucasfilm this year to begin working with artists and his fellow Star Wars directors. “Colin is someone I’ve been interested in working with ever since I saw Safety Not Guaranteed,” says Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. “The power of that film paired with the enormous success of Jurassic World speaks volumes about his abilities both as a storyteller and skilled filmmaker. We are thrilled to have such an incredible talent as Colin join our family and step into the Star Wars universe.”

It should mean he still has time to helm the Jurassic World sequel which is due out in 2017.

Alongside the announcement of Trevorrow, Disney have released the first official pic from Rogue One, as well as the logo. They also confirmed the cast, which will include Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk and Riz Ahmed.

Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) is directing that more, which is set shortly before the events of A New Hope, and follows a rogue band of resistance fighters who unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans and bring new hope to the galaxy (AKA the plans that end up stowed away in R2D2 at the beginning of A New Hope). Take a look at the first pic from Rogue One above.

Michelle Yeoh Back For Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon 2

May 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michelle-yeoh-crouching-tigerFor a while now, The Weinstein Company has been planning a sequel to Crouching Tiger. Now they’ve announced that Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon II – The Green Destiny will begin in March 2014 in Asia. Woo-ping Yuen is set to direct with Donnie Yen starring as Silent Wolf and Michelle Yeoh reprising her role as Yu Shu Lien.

The screenplay is based on Iron Knight, Silver Vase by Du Lu Wang, book 5 in the Crane-Iron Pentalogy series, on which the original Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was based. John Fusco (Forbidden Kingdom, Hidalgo, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron) is on screenplay dut.

Producer Harvey Weinstein commented, “I loved Ang Lee’s film. I thought it was a master class in directing, but I know we are in fantastic hands with Woo-ping Yuen directing the second installment of Crouching Tiger. Master Yuen worked with me on Iron Monkey, Kill Bill and now The Grandmaster. He is a first-class director and choreographer, and I am thrilled to be teaming up with him once more. With John Fusco’s incredible script and the dream team of Donnie Yen and Michelle Yeoh we are in great shape.”
