Bryan Singer Confirmed To Direct X-Men: Days of Future Past

October 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There was a bit of drama last week when despite the fact the shoot of X-Men: Days Of Future Past is already set to start in January, director Matthew Vaughn stepped down. At the time it was revealed that his most likely replacement was X-Men 1 & 2 helmer Bryan Singer, who up until that point was simply serving as a producer.

Now that’s been confirmed via Deadline, and Singer will indeed be in the director’s chair. Vaughn hasn’t completed severed all ties, as he is still attached to the project and is close to signing on as a producer alongside Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner. He also contributed to the story.

James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are set to return in the leads as Xavier and Magneto, with the likes of Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult as set to return. The original Days Of Future Past comic book storyline feature time travel, and features the mutants having to prevent a terrifying possible future. The film is set for release July 18, 2014.

Hunger Games: Mockingjay Gets Writer Danny Strong

October 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire might have only just started shooting, but with release dates already set for Lionsgate’s two-part adaptation of the final book in Suzanne Collins’ trilogy, Mockingjay, the studio has already set to work on the film.

Variety reports that Game Change screenwriter Danny Strong has signed up to write The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2. No director has been attached for the two-part finale as of yet, although it’s feasible Catching Fire helmer Francis Lawrence will stay on for these movies. There’s no news either on where in the story the break between the two parts might come. The novel sees Katniss and he cohorts becoming increasingly involved in a revolution that’s started to sweep Panem.

Danny Strong won an Emmy award last week for his Game Change script, and also wrote The Butler for director Lee Daniels, which is currently shooting in New Orleans. Mockingjay Part 1 is already set for release November 21st, 2014, while Part 2 comes on November 20th, 2015.

Hunger Games: Catching Fire Gets Jeffrey Wright as Beetee

September 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Lionsgate has announced that Jeffrey Wright has been cast in the role of Beetee in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, helping to round out the cast for the movie, which begins shooting soon. Hailing from District 3, Beetee earns the nickname ‘Volts’ because of his electronics expertise.

Critically acclaimed and known to theater, film and television audiences alike, Wright won Tony Award in 1994 for his work in Tony Kushner’s epic Angels in America and reprised his role(s) in Mike Nichols’ 2003 mini-series adaptation of the play, earning both a Golden Globe and an Emmy for his groundbreaking performance. Since then he has played memorable roles in films as diverse as Basquiat, Source Code, Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, W., Syriana and Cadillac Records.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. As they embark on a ‘Victor’s Tour’, Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever and thrusts former champions back into the arena.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will be directed by Francis Lawrence, with a release date of November 22nd, 2013 already set.

The Hunger Games – The Unseen Version (Blu-ray)

August 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci
Director: Gary Ross
Running Time: 142 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 3rd 2012

In the early days of DVD, studios went to great trouble putting together really good packages, with feature-length documentaries, plenty of featurettes and various other bits and pieces to please film fans. These releases are becoming increasingly rare, with even major mega-budget blockbusters often getting paltry extras that are only there because they’re expected and give the marketers something to write on the back of the box. It’s nice then that The Hunger Games gets a two-disc Blu-ray release with around three hours of features, including an extremely good 122 minute ‘making of’ documentary. [Read more…]

Jennifer Lawrence Heads For The Ends of the Earth

August 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Weinstein Company announced today that they will finance and distribute The Ends of the Earth, with Jennifer Lawrence (Hunger Games) currently in talks to star in what’s described as an epic, based on true events love story.

The Ends of the Earth is about powerful oil tycoon Ernest Marland who loses everything after engaging in a controversial love affair with his adopted daughter Lydie. He eventually annulled the adoption so that he could marry her. It certainly sounds like it’s going to be tough to do this right without making the whole thing seem creepy, although it is true Lydie wasn’t adopted until she was 19, so he wasn’t doing a full-on Woody Allen.

The screenplay comes from Chris Terrio (Argo), although no director has been hired as yet. (Source: Variety)

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Gets Lynn Cohen as Mags

August 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With The Hunger Games: Catching Fire featuring a Games where former champions must go up against one another, there’s a lot of new cast members who need to be cast. Now the movie has its Mags, as Variety reports that Lynn Cohen has been cast in the role. Mags is an eighty year old Hunger Games victor from District 4, and also a former mentor to the dashing Finnick Odair.

Known to New York theatre audiences for decades, Cohen has also appeared in films such as Steven Spielberg’s Munich and Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, New York, as well as Sex and the City and its sequel. She can next be seen in They Came Together, with Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler.

Mags in one of the more interesting of the former champions, as she wasn’t actually chosen for the new Games, but essentially decided to sacrifice herself to save others, as she knows she far too old to win another Hunger Games. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will be directed by Francis Lawrence. It’s set to shoot later this year, ahead of its release on November 22nd, 2013.

Hunger Games: Mockingjay Officially Split In Two

July 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After a lot of speculation, Lionsgate has officially confirmed that the final installment of The Hunger Games franchise will be split into two movies. The studio announced that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 will be released on November 21st, 2014, with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 ending the series November 20th, 2015.

Lionsgate has been thinking about this for a while, but needed to ensure it could get the key actors to agree to an extra movie before officially announcing the move. Splitting the last story in a major novel-to-film franchise has almost become common practice as of late, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows into two parts, and Summit doing the same with Stephenie Meyer’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire goes into production next month, which is set for release on November 22nd, 2013. Francis Lawrence is directing the sequel, although it’s too early to tell if he will be back for this two-part finale. (Source: Variety)

Silver Linings Playbook Trailer – Bradley Cooper has mental issues

June 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Well this looks like it might be fun. David O’Russell’s film has an incredible cast including Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Julia Stiles and Chris Tucker (making his first non Rush Hour film appearance since Jackie Brown in 1997). Here’s the synopsis: ‘Life doesn’t always go according to plan. Pat Solatano (Cooper) has lost everything – his house, his job, and his wife. He now finds himself living back with his mother and father after spending eight months in a state institution on a plea bargain. Pat is determined to rebuild his life, remain positive and reunite with his wife, despite the challenging circumstances of their separation. All Pat’s parents want is for him to get back on his feet – and to share their family’s obsession with the Philadelphia Eagles football team. When Pat meets Tiffany (Lawrence), a mysterious girl with problems of her own, things get complicated. Tiffany offers to help Pat reconnect with his wife, but only if he’ll do something very important for her in return. As their deal plays out, an unexpected bond begins to form between them, and silver linings appear in both of their lives.’

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Seeks Philip Seymour Hoffman

June 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the last couple of weeks, most of the speculation for new actors joining The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has surrounded the role of the handsome Finnick Odair, but there are other new characters to be cast as well. One of the more interesting is Plutarch Heavensbee, the new head of The Hunger Games (after the previous one was executed).

Now THR reports that the part has been offered to Philip Seymour Hoffman. There is no word yet on whether the actor has accepted the offer, or if negotiations have begun. It is a slightly bigger commitment than usual for Hoffman, as he would have to agree to appear in the third Hunger Games movie, Mockingjay, as well.

In Suzanne Collins’ novel, Plutarch tries to subtly show Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) that he is on her side, although he treats her and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) like any other Tribute in public, although his true role is not revealed until the end.

Francis Lawrence is directing Catching Fire from a screenplay by Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine). Shooting is due to run from July through December in Atlanta, Georgia.
