Secret in Their Eyes Trailer – Chiwetel Ejifor, Nicole Kidman & Julia Roberts star

July 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Secret-in-Their-Eyes-slideShortly after the 2009 Argentinian movie The Secret in Their Eyes won the Best Foreign Language Oscar there was a lot of talk on making an English-language version. It’s taken a while but now it’s on its way, with Chiwetel Ejiofor in the lead role, alongside Julia Robert and Nicole Kidman.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A tight-knit team of rising FBI investigators – Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Jess (Julia Roberts), along with their District Attorney supervisor Claire (Nicole Kidman) – is suddenly torn apart when they discover that Jess’s teenage daughter has been brutally and inexplicably murdered.

Now, thirteen years later, after obsessively searching every day for the elusive killer, Ray finally uncovers a new lead that he’s certain can permanently resolve the case, nail the vicious murderer, and bring long-desired closure to his team. No one is prepared, however, for the shocking, unspeakable secret that will reveal the enduring, destructive effects of personal vengeance on the human soul.

‘Interweaving past and present, this deeply layered mystery explores the murky boundaries between justice and revenge, and asks the question: how far would you go to right an unfathomable wrong?’

The movie’s due out later this year. [Read more…]

julia-robertsGarry Marshall’s ensemble rom-com New Year’s Eve may not have matched the surprise success of Valentine’s Day, but he’s visiting the concept again with Mother’s Day, according to Deadline.

The director is now living up the cast, with Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson and Jason Sudeikis all in talks to star.

Katherine Fugate wrote the first two movies, but this new instalment replaces her with Anya Kochoff-Romano and Lily Hollander.

Assuming it all comes together it will mark the fourth collaboration between Marshall and Julia Roberts, following Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride and Valentine’s Day. The movie should start shooting in August.

Larry Kramer Talks Adapting The Normal Heart Sequel For The Screen

December 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

larry-kramerAfter more than 20 years of trying to get it made, The Normal Heart finally made it to screens last summer to huge acclaim, going on to win two Emmys and score three Golden Globe Nominations. It also scored a large enough audience that HBO backed Larry Kramer to adapt his follow-up, the Pulitzer Prize finalist The Destiny Of Me, for the network, with Ryan Murphy set to direct.

Now he’s been talking to Variety about it, saying, “I’m about two-thirds of the way through the first pass. It starts around the end of ‘The Normal Heart’ in 1984. And it goes [through to] the appearance of the first drugs around 2001. Mark Ruffalo, who we hope will repeat his performance, will have to play Ned at a few times in his life: at the time of ‘The Normal Heart’; in the middle where he gets sick; and today.”

Ruffalo isn’t the only actor he hopes will be back, as he adds, “The part of Tommy, which I hope will be played again by Jim Parsons, is much bigger. He becomes a more important character in the sequel, as he was in my real life.”

The same is true of Julia Roberts, with Kramer commenting that, “In the sequel, the part of the doctor is quite dramatic in that her polio returns and she has to go into an iron lung, and she conducts business from the hospital.”

Many had wondered what the notoriously difficult to please Kramer would think of The Normal Heart film, but he was delighted with the results, saying of the first time he saw it, “I was brought in from the hospital in a wheelchair to an HBO screening room to watch the final version. It was an experience more surreal than anything else. I wasn’t able to really take in the magnitude of Ryan’s achievement… I’ve been very happy. I thought the cast was superb, and HBO has got to be the most wonderful producers in the world.”

However while he notes that gay people are represented on TV more, he still feels there’s a long way to go for LGBT people, saying, “I don’t see what I want to see. We’re still a population of people tragically unrepresented by power. We are very disorganized in terms of power in Washington, our ability to lobby, our ability to get what we’re entitled to and the few organizations that we have are not strong enough. We still don’t fight hard enough and we’re still denied so much in terms of equality. Marriage, that goal will probably happen, I guess. But everybody has been concentrating on marriage at the expense of other issues—certainly health care, insurance and AIDS, which is still very prevalent in the gay world. Sadly, the drugs that have come along to control HIV have sent a lot of people back into living the kind of life that got us in trouble in the first place.”

Jack O’Connell & Julia Roberts Up To Join George Clooney In Money Monster

November 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jack-oconnell-shirtlessJodie Foster is stepping behind the camera again for Money Monster and she’s building a great cast to do it. George Clooney has been attached for a while, and now THR reports that Julia Roberts and Jack O’Connell are in talks to join him.

The film is about Lee Gates, a TV personality whose insider trading tips have made him the money guru of Wall Street. However when Kyle, a viewer who lost all of his family’s money on a bad tip from Lee, holds Lee hostage on air, ratings soar as the entire country tunes in to this media frenzy to find out just how much a man’s life is worth.

O’Connell will be Kyle, while Robert will be the show’s producer, who must help uncover the truth behind a tangle of big money lies in order to keep Gates alive.

The near real-time drama is set to shoot sometime next year.

The Normal Heart (TV Review)

June 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

Starring: Mark Ruffalo, Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons, Taylor Kitsch, Julia Roberts
Director: Ryan Murphy
Running Time: 138 mins
Release Date: June 1st 2014

In the last few years there seems to have been a renewed interest in the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s. There have been documentaries, films and books, as well as major re-stagings of Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart. The reason for this is probably twofold.

Firstly there is a whole generation of LGBT people who weren’t even born when AIDS first emerged, many of whom know little about it. Even if they do know about it, they often treat it like something from the dim and distant past that has nothing to do with them (as I’ve said before, the fact gay-history isn’t taught in schools tends to make many people, including many gay people, think there isn’t one or that it isn’t important). Secondly, those who survived the emergence of ‘gay cancer’ are now getting older (Kramer is now 78) and so it’s not surprising that they should want their stories recorded to ensure that it’s those who lived through it who control the narrative. More New The Normal Heart Posters Arrive Featuring Taylor Kitsch, Jim Parsons & Julia Roberts

April 23, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

normal-heart-poster-quintetJust yesterday we featured two new posters for HBO’s upcoming The Normal Heart, which featured lead actors Mark Ruffalo and Matt Bomer.

Now they’ve been joined by three more, this time giving us Taylor Kitsch, Jim Parsons and Julia Roberts.

Based on Larry Kramer’s seminal play, The Normal Heart sees Mark Ruffalo as Ned Weeks, who in the early 80s is one of the first people to raise an alarm about a new disease that’s initially known as ‘Gay Cancer’, but which was later called HIV/AIDS. Matt Bomer is Felix Turner, a gay fashion journalist who becomes Ned’s lover.

Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons will be gay activist Tommy Boatwright, a role he previously took in a 2011 Broadway revival of the play. Julia Roberts is Emma Brookner, a doctor who is the only one of her peers in New York taking AIDS seriously. Jonathan Groff is playing an early victim of the disease called Craig, whose boyfriend, Taylor Kitsch, starts off as a closeted investment banker but eventually becomes an AIDS activist.

Larry Kramer’s play is considered one of the most important reactions to the early AIDS epidemic, written by someone who has on the front lines of the fight, such as co-founding Gay Men’s Health Crisis and ACT UP. Kramer later wrote a follow-up, The Destiny Of Me.

You can see all five Normal Heart posters below (click on them for larger versions). The film debuts in the US on May 25th and will hopefully reach the rest of the world soon afterwards.

Full The Normal Heart Trailer – Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons, Mark Ruffalo & Taylor Kitsch offer searing drama

April 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

We’ve had a few fairly short trailers for The Normal Heart, but now HBO has released a new one, which suggests this is going to be a dramatic and powerful adaptation of Larry Kramer’s seminal play.

It’s not going to pull any punches in its look at the early days of AIDS in New York, when the disease didn’t have a name and no one knew what it was that was suddenly striking down gay men. Inevitably people are already talking about which Emmys and Golden Globes it might win.

In the film Mark Ruffalo takes on the lead role of Ned Weeks, who in the early 80s is one of the first people to raise an alarm about the new disease that initially was known as ‘Gay Cancer’, but which later was called HIV/AIDS. Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons will be gay activist Tommy Boatwright, a role he previously took in a 2011 Broadway revival of the play.

The rest of the world should get to see The Normal Heart shortly after its US HBO debut on May 25th. [Read more…]

New The Normal Heart Trailer – Fresh look at Mark Ruffalo, Matt Bomer, Taylor Kitsch and co. in the AIDS drama

April 4, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’ve had a couple of brief looks at Ryan Murphy’s take on Larry Kramer’s classic play about the early days of AIDS, The Normal Heart. Now comes another, courtesy of EW.

The Normal Heart Teaser Trailer – Mark Ruffalo, Matt Bomer, Taylor Kitsch and co. take on Larry Kramer’s classic play

March 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After several years in development, The Normal Heart is finally on its way, with Glee’s Ryan Murphy directing an all-star cast for a film that will first air on HBO in the US on May 25th. It looks like it’s gonna be pretty good, with the movie bringing out the fear and confusion present in Larry Kramer’s classic play about the early days of AIDS, before those affected decide to fight back against a system that is almost as afraid of the type of people often affected by HIV as it is of the disease itself.

Mark Ruffalo takes on the lead role of Ned Weeks, who in the early 80s is one of the first people to raise an alarm about the new disease that initially was known as ‘Gay Cancer’, but which later was called HIV/AIDS.
