Golden Globe Nominations Announced

The Golden Globes may be a bit of a pointless dog & pony show (it’s essentially about Hollywood trying to line up Oscar nominations, with the rest of us caught up in that), but they’ve certainly grown into a big deal in the public consciousness. The nominations for the 2012 ceremony have now been announced and there’s a pretty good showing for LGBT-themed movies.

Overall, the most notable thing is how ecumenical the nominations list is, with a large amount of films getting a look in and nothing jumping forward as an obvious frontrunner. The Artist got the most noms though, with six, and so now has to be seen as having a good shot of picking up the big gong, although whether the silent movie can go on to Oscar success is less certain.

On the LGBT front, Christopher Plummer scored a Best Supporting Actor nomination as an elderly gay man in Beginners, continuing a march many believe could end with him picking up an Oscar. Also making a decent Golden Globe showing was Albert Nobbs, with Glenn Close nominated for Best Actress – Drama for playing the title character, who was born female but lives as a man in 19th Century Ireland. Janet McTeer was also nominated for the movie in the Best Supporting Actress category. And just to ensure an even stronger LGBT showing in the acting categories, Leo DiCaprio was nominated for playing the closeted J. Edgar Hoover in Clint Eastwood’s biopic of the FBI chief.

As for real-life LGBT actors, bisexual Tilda Swinton was nominated for Best Actress in We Need To Talk About Kevin, Jodie Foster scored a nomination for Carnage and Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In picked up a nod in the Best Foreign Language Film category,

First Official Great Gatsby Pics Released

It’s a full year until Baz Luhrmann’s 3D take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic The Great Gatsby hits cinemas, but the first official shots from the film have now been released (see them above and below), featuring Carey Mulligan, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire.

It all looks wonderfully flappery, but with a budget over over $100 million, you’d hope it’d look good. It does seem to be an awful lot to spend on a period piece in the current climate, but many feel Warner Bros. is looking to the future with the movie. While The Great Gatsby is seen as one of the great American novels, the definitive film version is yet to be made (the closest is the rather stuffy 70s version with Robert Redford). If they can get it right, Warner will be making money out of the film for decades, especially as it’s a core text for most US schools, and so spending the money now should pay off in the future – and indeed could well pay off now.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Great Gatsby follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.’

Titanic 3D Trailer

They promised its heart would go on and on, and now it’s holding to that, as Titanic arrives back in UK cinemas on April 15th, 2012 – the 100th anniversary of the sinking – but this time converted into three-dimensions.Now the trailer for the 3D re-release is here, but sadly on the interweb, it’s rather flat, so we don’t really get to appreciated whether the extra dimension helps things or not! Oh, and take a look at the new poster below.

Sacha Baron Cohen On For Django Unchained

It’s starting to seem there’s not going to be anyone who isn’t in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained – or at least that every role will be filled with a recognisable face. The latest to join the throng is Sacha Baron Cohen who Variety says is in final negotiations to join the cast.

Baron Cohen will play Scotty, a gambler who purchases Django’s slave wife (Kerry Washington) to use as a female companion. Scotty is apparently a smaller role, but he plays a vital part in the story.

Baron Cohen will join a cast which includes Jamie Foxx as Django and Leonardo DiCaprio as evil plantation owner Calvin Candie, along with Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, Gerald McRaney, Dennis Christopher, Kurt Russell and Laura Cayouette.

DiCaprio and Penn Eye The Revenant

Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn are two actors it’d be fascinating to see facing off against one another properly on screen, and now it looks like it may happen, as Deadline reports they’ve been taking meetings to star in the revenge drama The Revenant for New Regency and director Alejandro González Iñárritu.

Mark L. Smith wrote the screenplay, adapted from Michael Punke’s novel. The story is about Hugh Glass, a frontiersman in the 1820s who is mauled by a bear during a fur trapping expedition. Two men stay behind to look after him, but, thinking Hugh won’t survive, they rob him and leave him for dead. When the man recovers, he goes out to seek revenge on the two men who abandoned him. Leonardo DiCaprio is being considered for Hugh Glass, and Sean Penn may be one of the men who robs him.

If the cast falls into place (which at the moment is by no means certain), The Revenant could start shooting as early as next autumn.

Anthony LaPaglia Up For Django Unchained

There’s no doubt that Tarantino has a talent for attracting great casts to his projects, and that’s certainly true of his upcoming Django Unchained, which has now added Anthony LaPaglia (Without A Trace) to its ever more impressive roster.

Deadline reports that LaPaglia will play the leader of an Australian group who runs into freed slave Django (Jamie Foxx), just after they’ve acquired a group of slaves to turn into fighters. The main plot sees Django freed by Christoph Waltz’s bounty hunter and then go on a mission to find his wife, who’s under the control of evil plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).

Here’s what LaPaglia had to say about Django Unchained, “It’s wildly ambitious and imaginative, deals with that subject matter in a way it hasn’t been dealt with before. The way the cast has shaped up, it’s exciting to be involved.”

He also revealed he will play the brother of Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character, although scheduling issues still need to be worked out before it’s confired Gordon-Levitt will be in the movie. Production is scheduled to start in January, on location in New Orleans.

Kerry Washington Gets Django Unchained Lead

We’ve known for quite a while that Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained would be about a slave breaking free and going to rescue his wife, but we haven’t know who that wife would be. However, now Deadline reports that the director has cast Kerry Washington as Broomhilda.

Jamie Foxx will play the slave, who is freed by a bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) and taught the bounty-hunting game. Django yearns to be reunited with his wife (Kerry Washington), which leads to a showdown at the Candyland ranch of evil plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).

Tarantino has apparent long been eyeing Kerry Washington for Broomhilda, but was also considering the possibility of discovering an unknown actress for the role. After a fruitless casting search, the director went back to Washington. Filming is expected to start in the enxt couple of months.

Gordon-Levitt Sought For Django Unchained

Quentin Tarantino is busy locking down the cast for his upcoming Django Unchained, ahead of a planned shoot in January, and now Variety reports that he’s set his sights on Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The actor and the director apparently went out for dinner a few weeks ago, and now Gordon-Levitt’s entered talks to join Quentin’s new movie.

The actor wants to join the movie, which would reunite him with his Inception co-star Leonardo DiCaprio. Joseph Gordon-Levitt has quite a few scheduling issues, though, that stand in the way – although with Premium Rush moving from this winter to August, it does free up his schedule a little. It isn’t known what role Gordon-Levitt would play though.

The movie centres on a slave, played by Jamie Foxx, who teams up with a German bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) to retrieve his wife from an evil plantation owner (Leonardo DiCaprio). Other cast members include Samuel L. Jackson, Gerald McRaney, Kurt Russell, and Don Johnson.

Leonardo Dicaprio May Play Imitation Game

Another day, another movie Leonardo DiCaprio might make. While he does love storing up an almost ridiculous amount of potential projects, this one is a little more intriguing than most, as well as being a role he could be extremely good in. Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has bought the spect script The Imitiation Game, with DiCaprio having ‘the inside track’ the play the lead role.

That would see him as British mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst and computer scientist Alan Turing. ‘Informed’ by Andrew Hodges’ definitive biography, ‘Alan Turing: The Enigma’, the film will look at the shy man who is now seen by many as the father of modern computing. His work led to the creation of some of the first computers, which were used to help the Allies decode German communications during WWII. However due to the sensitive nature of his work, his contribution wasn’t officially recognised for many years.

Indeed, rather than being praised by his country, he was persecuted for being gay, which led to depression, the destruction of his career and him eventually killing himself by eating a cyanide-laced apple. It’s an incredible story, and with increased interest in Turing in recent years, it was only time until Hollywood moved forward with a movie about him.

Deadline adds that’s they’ve heard Ron Howard is interested in directing the project. If he does, he’d better not de-gay this genius as he did with John Nash in A Beautiful Mind, or he’ll be walking into a storm of protest. And presuming Turing’s gayness is left intact, it would be another movie for DiCaprio about someone with a complex sexuality following J. Edgar.

Don Johnson May Join Django Unchained

While Quentin Tarantino has been putting an impressive cast together for Django Unchained, so far it’s lacked his trademark actor on the downswing of their career who needs a bit of a boost. Now it’s got one, as Variety reports that Don Johnson is now in talks to join the film.

The actor will play a plantation owner called Spencer Bennett, who runs into Django (Jamie Foxx) and the German bounty hunter Schultz (Christoph Waltz) as they search for Django’s wife. Bennett is also said to oversee a stable of black prostitutes he calls “ponies.”

Tarantino has reportedly been courting Don Johnson for several months, and it seems the actor finally gave in. Quite why he took so long is anyone’s guess. Can’t he remember what happened to John Travolta post Pulp Fiction? It’s not like Johnson is exactly in demand, is it, so you’d have thought he’d had jumped the moment Tarantino called.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, Gerald McRaney, Dennis Christopher, Kurt Russell, and Laura Cayouette are also set to star in Django Unchained, which starts shooting in the next couple of months.
