Anything Trailer – Matt Bomer plays a transgender sex worker in the controversial film

April 10, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When it first became widely known that Matt Bomer was playing a trangender sex worker in the upcoming movie Anything, there was an immediate controversy. Many were angry that yet again a cisgender person was playing a transgender role, and there was also frustration that yet again that trans person was going to be involved in sex work.

However, many were glad that at least the film was bringing much greater attention to the issue. It resulted in producer Mark Ruffalo commenting, “To the Trans community. I hear you. It’s wrenching to you see you in this pain. I am glad we are having this conversation… We are all learning.”

Fellow producer Kylene K. Steele, who is transgender, told IndieWire, “I think when the trans community said some of the things they said, they didn’t realize they were attacking an ally. I hope people come with an open heart and an open mind… I hope they see it’s a human thing, seeing beauty in everything, [and] what love can do… You shouldn’t be judged by who the person’s gender is, if they can pretend and be the person that’s fit for the role, then that’s the way it should be. You don’t necessarily have to be trans to play a trans character.”

Many people feel differently though and that the idea that a cis man ‘pretending’ to be trans is part of the problem, as they feel it reinforces (even if inadvertently) the impression some people have that trans people are just pretending or performing their gender following transition.

The film is itself is about, ‘Early Landry (John Carroll Lynch), who after losing his wife is forced to move to Los Angeles so he can be cared for by his over-protective sister (Maura Tierney), but escapes her clutches to start a new life in Hollywood. He quickly becomes enamored by his neighbor, Freda (Matt Bomer). His loneliness and need for companionship opens his heart to a remarkable new relationship, but their growing affection must be reconciled with the complexity of their disparate backgrounds.’

Anything will be released in New York on May 11th and Los Angeles and other markets on May 18th. [Read more…]

Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons, Andrew Rannells & Zachary Quinto Teaming For Broadway Revival Of The Boys in the Band

November 1, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Earlier this year, a new stage production of Mat Crowley’s 1968 gay play The Boys In The Band got a limited run in the West End. It looks like that may have inspired a very starry 50th Anniversary Broadway revival which is being planned for 2018, starring an impressive selection of gay actors.

Matt Bomer (making his Broadway debut), Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, Tuc Waitkins Robin de Jesus, Brian Hutchison and Michael Benjamin Washington have been cast in the production, with Joe Mantello directing. TV mega-producer Ryan Murphy is also involved behind-the-scenes.

Crowley’s play broke new ground when it debuted off-Broadway in 1968 for showing the lives of modern gay men in a unfliching way – something many audiences had never seen before. The 1970 film version, directed by William Friedkin, is often considered Hollywood’s first gay film.

The play is set in the New York apartment of Michael, who’s hosting a birthday party for his friend Harold. However, as the alcohol flows, the guests begin to tell a few too many home truths, revealing that underneath the jokes and cameraderie, many of the men are filled with anger and self-loathing.

Many now view it as problematic, due to the fact so many of the characters are seething, bitter, narcissistic, shallow and filled with internalised homophobia. However, Crowley has said that while it may be different now, in the era before Stonewall, that’s what him and his friends were like.

The revival is being lined up for a limited 15-week run at the Booth Theater, with the show starting previews on April 30th and running through to August 12th.

“In 1968, Mart Crowley made theatrical history by giving voice to gay men onstage, in this uncompromising, blisteringly honest, and wickedly funny play,” Ryan Murphy commented. “The play was groundbreaking in its exploration of how gay men treated each other and how they were made to feel about themselves. And while some attitudes have thankfully shifted, it’s important to be reminded of what we have overcome and how much further we still have to go.”

Anything Clip – First look at the controversial film starring Matt Bomer as a transgender sex worker

June 13, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When it first became widely known that Matt Bomer was playing a trangender sex worker in the upcoming movie Anything, there was an immediate controversy. Many were angry that yet again a cisgender person was playing a transgender role, and there was also frustration that yet again that trans person was going to be involved in sex work.

The film is now preparing for its premiere this weekend in the LA Muse section of the Los Angeles Film Festival. Ahead of that the first clip from the movie has arrived, debuting over at Deadline.

The film is about, ‘Early Landry (John Carroll Lynch), who after losing his wife is forced to move to Los Angeles so he can be cared for by his over-protective sister (Maura Tierney), but escapes her clutches to start a new life in Hollywood. He quickly becomes enamored by his neighbor, Freda (Matt Bomer). His loneliness and need for companionship opens his heart to a remarkable new relationship, but their growing affection must be reconciled with the complexity of their disparate backgrounds.’

Marc Ruffalo, who executive produced the film, has defended Bomer’s casting, although its yet to be seen whether a wider audience will be prepared to look past the issues that have been highlighted. It’ll be interesting to see the first reviews following its premiere on Saturday at 3 PM at the Arclight Cinema in Santa Monica. Take a look at the first clip below. [Read more…]

Matt Bomer Talks About The Difficulties He Faced With His Parents When Coming Out As Gay

May 2, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While there are many heartwarming stories out there about families brought closer together when someone comes out as gay, there’s still a lot of prejudice out there and it can sometimes be difficult. That’s particularly true if you come from a conservative family, like actor Matt Bomer did.

He’s been talking about how he came out to his parents to Out, telling them, “Telling your family is a huge, huge deal. I really view my life as divided between the time before I told my parents, and the time after. And the decisions I made, and the life I lived, before and after, are vastly different. It’s night and day.”

As he says of the time before, “I was raised in a conservative Christian household. We weren’t even allowed to watch ‘secular’ television, anything that was deemed not proper for Christians.”

He then relates the story of his coming out, “I wrote a letter to my parents. I would have lost my sense of direction if I tried to do it in person… There was radio silence for a long, long time, at least six months… And then I came home and we had the blowup that I’d always feared. But we got that out of the way, and we got down to the business of figuring out how to love each other. I would say within a matter of years we started to figure it out. It was a struggle. It’s a struggle for anybody to take their paradigms and set of beliefs and understandings and completely flip the script. So I’m empathetic toward everyone. And my family is so loving. My mom just asked me, [my husband] Simon, and the boys to go down and speak to her women’s group in Houston so, you know, I’m here to tell people it can get better. Because I had so many people in my life saying, ‘You need to get rid of all expectations — you need to cut them out.’ But I was like, ‘They’re my family’.”

As he points out, “I want to say that since then, my family’s come around and they are amazing, incredible grandparents to our kids.”

So even if coming out can be hard and cause family problems, that isn’t always the end of the story.

Mark Ruffalo Addresses Controversy Over Matt Bomer’s Casting As Transgender Sex Worker

September 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

mark-ruffaloShortly after it began to become widely known that Mat Bomer is playing a transgender sex worker in the recently filmed Anything, a backlash began. Many in the trans community felt the casting was inappropriate, setting off a bit of a storm on social media.

The anger stemmed from people feeling cisgender men should not play trans characters (with some suggesting that it helped reinforce prejudices that trans people are merely wearing a costume), that the movie was playing with a dangerous trope of trans women as sex workers, and that by casting Bomer they had deprived a trans actress of what could have been her big break. Initially bother Bomer and executive producer Mark Ruffalo made no comment, but now Ruffalo has addressed the controversy on Twitter.

He says: ‘To the Trans community. I hear you. It’s wrenching to you see you in this pain. I am glad we are having this conversation. It’s time… In all honesty I suggested Matt for the role after the profound experience I had with him while making “The Normal Heart”.’

Some welcomed Ruffalo’s comments, such as trans actress Jen Richards. Her heartfelt anger at news of the casting was one of the main catalysts for the anger felt, with her comments including that ‘When @MattBomer plays a trans sex worker, he is telling the world that underneath it all, trans women like me are still really just men… Dear @MarkRuffalo & @MattBomer: if you release this movie, it will directly lead to violence against already at risk trans women.’ However, after Ruffalo spoke out, she replied, ‘Thank you @MarkRuffalo, this means a lot. I would love to talk to you about it, and how to move forward positively.’

However, others were less welcoming, suggesting that a conversation wasn’t what was needed – a change of direction was. As the movie is already in the can, it’s unlikely Bomer could be recast, but the hope will be that the protest will have an effect on both Anything and the casting/depiction of trans characters in the future. Matt Bomer Playing Transgender Sex Worker In New Movie Anything, Which Has Just Finished Shooting

August 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac 16 Comments

matt-bomer-shirtlessThis one has managed to fly under our radar, but it’s just been revealed that the film Anything has finished shooting, which will feature Matt Bomer as a transgender sex worker. He’s part of a great cast that also includes, Golden Globe winner Maura Tierney, John Carroll Lynch, Micah Hauptman, Margot Bingham and Melora Hardin.

In the movie, which is based on a play by Timothy McNeil, Lynch plays a man named Early Landry who is suicidal over the death of his wife. Early moves from Mississippi to Los Angeles, where he can be under the watchful eye of his protective sister, Laurette (Tierney). However, when Early begins an intense new friendship with Freda (Bomer), a transgender sex worker, the unlikely new couple must reconcile their vastly different backgrounds as they fill the void in each other’s lives.

A couple of years ago, Bomer spoke of his interest in starring onstage in McNeil’s play, telling Deadline, “I would love to come back, and I actually read a beautiful new play by Timothy McNeil that I am going to start just seeing if there’s some interest in it. It’s a really mature, very literary piece that is very powerful and I think very timely. It’s a hell of a piece of theater. And you know, in the great tradition of the theater, I refuse to be any one thing. Or any one person.”

However, the fact a film version was coming and Bomer was starring hasn’t been mentioned too much until now. That said, one of the film’s executive producers, Mark Ruffalo, has been talking about it on social media, although not too many details have been known. He now comments, “I’m very happy to be part of this daring project. Love is at the essence of great storytelling and transcends all discrimination and politicization.”

Ruffalo and writer/director McNeil have known each other since their studies with the famed Stella Adler and together with Louise Runge, Micah Hauptman and Ofrit Peres, have collaborated to bring the play from the stage to the screen. It’s not finished shooting in Los Angeles.

Some may see Ruffalo’s comment above as an attempt to head off possible criticism about casting the cisgender Bomer in a transgender role, and also possible stereotyping around the fact the trans character is a sex worker. It’s a bit early to know if these will become issues, but there’s no doubt it’s good to see more trans characters in film.

Crush Of The Day: Matt Bomer Gets His Wet T-Shirt Action On For The Cover Of Men’s Fitness

January 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matt-bomer-mens-fitness-poolAh Matt Bomer. I’m convinced the reason he hasn’t broken out to be a bigger star is that he’s so ridiculously good-looking that he doesn’t actually look like a real person. It’s like someone drew a picture of the world’s hottest guy and then brought it to life.

His showing off that pretty face and chiselled physique for Men’s Fitness, including a cover where his abs are so defined a lot of people have suggested they must have be drawn one. Perhaps he did get a bit of Photoshop assistance (most magazine covers do), but anyone who’s seen the like of Magic Mike knows Matt can certainly hold his own in the abs department.

Take a look at the cover below, along with a video of the photoshoot that Men’s Fitness has released to accompany it. And then seriously, tell me he looks like a real person?

The Nice Guys Trailer – Ryan Gosling & Russell Crowe don’t want to get shot by Matt Bomer

December 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

nice-guys-poster1-slideShane Black had a huge hit with Iron Man 3, but the Kiss Kiss Bang Bang writer/director is returning to the world of neo-noir with a dash of humour, with The Nice Guys. He’s lined up a great cast, including Ryan Gosling, Russell Crowe, Matt Bomer, Kim Basinger and Margaret Qualley.

A red band trailer is now here, which certainly makes it look like the film might be fun.

The film is about muscle-for-hire Jackson Healy (Crowe), a recovering alcoholic, and private detective Holland March (Gosling), a current alcoholic, who are brought together by the apparent suicide of a porn star. However the dead woman’s aunt (Basinger) claims that she saw her niece alive and well after she was supposed to have killed herself. Healy takes on the case hoping to make some easy money, but soon both men are dragged into a far-reaching conspiracy that is rooted in smog and the car industry.

And as you’ll see in the promo below, also seems to involve Matt Bomer really, really wanting to shoot them.

The Nice Guys will be in cinemas next summer.

Crush Of The Day: Matt Bomer, Dan Stevens & Chen Kun For Armani

June 24, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

armani-bomer-stevens-chen1You would hope that whatever guys were in an Armani fashion campaign would look good, but when you hire Matt Bomer, Dan Stevens And Chen Kun it’s pretty much guaranteed.

The trio are looking exceedingly smart for Armani’s Made to Measure campaign, with photographer John Balsom photographing the actors in a historic New York theatre and ensuring they look classic and yet still modern at the same time.

I think it’s fair to say that 99% of us will never own a tailored Armani suit, so this is the closest we’re likely to get (and in my case that’s probably a good thing, I’ve I’d never look as good as these three do).

You can take a look at the pics above and below. [Read more…]
