Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt & Ryan Phillippe Turned Down Brokeback Mountain, Says Gus Van Sant

July 22, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s difficult to imagine anyone except for Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger playing the lead roles in Brokeback Mountain, but it might have been very different. Before Ang Lee took over, Gus Van Sant was developing the film. However, he’s recently told Indiewire that one of the reasons he didn’t make the movie was how difficult it was to find someone to star.

He says “Nobody wanted to do it. I was working on it, and I felt like we needed a really strong cast, like a famous cast. That wasn’t working out. I asked the usual suspects: Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Ryan Phillippe. They all said no.”

It could have been a very different film with them, but before we cry ‘homophobia’ for their decision not to make the movie, Van Sant adds that he was angling to make a movie very different to what others involved were hoping for. He comments, “The original story, which was in The New Yorker, was so beautiful and simple, and Larry [McMurtry, screenwriter] had turned it into something that resembled ‘The Last Picture Show’. Which was really good if you were thinking along certain lines … I was thinking more like ‘Gerry,’ ‘Elephant,’ ‘Last Days.’ I kind of wanted to go back to the simplest view of the short story, which I couldn’t do … I didn’t really want to go and talk Larry and Diana [Ossana, producer] out of what they had created, because it was great.”

Ossana confirmed to Indiewire that those actors were approached, but was very diplomatic about why they might have turned it down, just saying, “Yes, all those young gentlemen (at the time) turned down the project, for various reasons.”

It’s also known that Mark Wahlberg was approached and turned the movie down. At the time Gyllenhaal and Ledger were up and comers, although it was still almost unheard of for a mainstream American film to cast two well-known heterosexual actors to play gay romantic leads in a movie. Indeed, it hasn’t happened that many times since.

New Downsizing Trailer – Matt Damon & Kristen Wiig get small in Alexander Payne’s latest

November 5, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sideways and About Schmidt director Alexander Payne has wanted to make Downsizing for a long time. It’s only now he’s managed to, with those who’ve seen it suggesting that this is Payne on a larger scale than we’ve seen before, but still with his idiosyncratic take on things.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Downsizing imagines what might happen if, as a solution to over-population, Norwegian scientists discover how to shrink humans to five inches tall and propose a 200-year global transition from big to small. People soon realize how much further money goes in a miniaturized world, and with the promise of a better life, everyman Paul Safranek (Matt Damon) and wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) decide to abandon their stressed lives in Omaha in order to get small and move to a new downsized community — a choice that triggers life-changing adventures.’

The movie, which stars Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig, Christoph Waltz and Jason Sudeikis, is out in the US in December, and arrive in the UK on January 19th. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Suburbicon UK Trailer – Matt Damon stars in the George Clooney directed dark comedy

August 21, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The bromance between Matt Damon and George Clooney continues with Suburbicon, which Damon stars in and Clooney directs. To make sure it really is a bit of a love-in, the script comes from Clooney’s O Brother Where Art Thou? and Hail Caesar directors, Joel & Ethan Coen, with contributions from George and his longtime producing partner Grant Heslov.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Suburbicon’ is a peaceful, idyllic suburban community with affordable homes and manicured lawns… the perfect place to raise a family, and in the summer of 1959, the Lodge family is doing just that. But the tranquil surface masks a disturbing reality, as husband and father Gardner Lodge (Matt Damon) must navigate the town’s dark underbelly of betrayal, deceit, and violence. Suburbicon is this Autumn’s much-anticipated dark comedy, with a fantastic cast also including Julianne Moore, Oscar Isaac and newcomer Noah Jupe.’

Oscar Isaac and Julianne Moore also star. It’s due in US cinemas in October, with a late November 24th UK date set. Take a look at the British trailer below. [Read more…]

After watching this film you’re going to feel dumb. I bet you thought the Great Wall Of China was built to protect the north of the country from human invaders. Nope, it was to stop alien dinosaurs attacking and eventually becoming unstoppable.

Set hundreds of years ago, William (Matt Damon) gets mixed up in this after he and his friend, Tovar (Pedro Pascal) head towards China looking to steal/trade for the fabled ‘black powder’. Matt Damon Returning To The Heist Franchise For Ocean’s Eight

November 15, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matt-damon-oceans-thirteenThey’ve pulled together a great cast for Ocean’s Eight, which will reboot the Ocean’s Eleven franchise with a largely female cast. However, ET reveals that at least one member of the earlier cast will be showing up, with Matt Damon confirming he’s set to shoot a cameo.

He says,  “I’m doing a little bit in the movie. I haven’t read it yet, but the cast is phenomenal and I’m excited to see what those women do with it. It’s going to be fun.”

Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson and Awkwafina will be the titular eight, who stage a complex heist centred on the annual New York Met Gala Ball. It’s also been reported that Bullock’s character is a relative of George Clooney’s Danny Ocean, but it’s not known if Clooney himself will be involved at all.

Hunger Games helmer Gary Ross should start shooting the movie either later this year or early next year in New York. Steven Soderbergh, who directed the Ocean’s 11 trilogy, will produce.

The Great Wall Trailer – Matt Damon heads into medieval Chinese action

October 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

great-wall-slideWith China now the second biggest market for movies in the world and Chinese companies investing heavily in film, Hollywood is on the lookout for ways to tap in the Middle Kingdom’s money. There’s also Legendary Pictures – makers of Godzilla and The Dark Knight Movies – which was bought by Chinese investors. That’s helped result in The Great Wall, which star Matt Damon but takes us into Chinese history and one of its most iconic structures.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Starring global superstar Matt Damon and directed by one of the most breathtaking visual stylists of our time, Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers), Legendary’s The Great Wall tells the story of an elite force making a valiant stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure. The first English-language production for Yimou is the largest film ever shot entirely in China. The Great Wall also stars Jing Tian, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe and Andy Lau.’

While he all know The Great Wall as looking pretty in pictures, it’s rather cool to see it being used for its original intention, as a massive defensive structure. However, we’re hoping it doesn’t give Donald Trump any more ideas.

The film will be out early next year. Take a look at the teaser trailer below. [Read more…]

Jason Bourne Trailer – Matt Damon is back in action as the former secret agent

April 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jason-bourne-pic1After leaving the franchise behind, it surprised many when Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass were planning to return to the Bourne franchise. However, that’s exactly what they’ve done and now the first official trailer for the movie had arrived.

Along with the promo comes a poster as well as some comments from Greengrass, who says, “Jason Bourne isn’t a super hero; he doesn’t wear a cape or a mask. He’s not one of those kinds of guys. He is just an ordinary man. I think when people watch Jason Bourne they can imagine how they might react in those situations and those circumstances, and when you see him thinking his way through and coming up with a plan and executing his plan, that’s incredibly exciting.”

He adds, “It has taken us a long time to come back because we didn’t have the right story before. The world needed to change and then there comes that moment when it makes sense. You know when it feels right and that’s when you do it, not before.”

Alicia Vikander, Julia Stiles, Vincent Cassel and Tommy Lee Jones also star.

Jason Bourne will be released in UK cinemas July 27th. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]
