Jared Leto Didn’t Want To Be A Cliché As An HIV+ Hooker In Dallas Buyers Club, But Did Want To Honour An Old Friend

September 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jared Leto has mainly spent his time concentrating on music for the past few years. He made Mr. Nobody in 2009, but was drawn back to acting by Dallas Buyer’s Club, which has just premiered at TIFF to strong reviews.

Jared plays a cross-dressing, HIV+ hooker in the movie. He’s been talking about the role and how he was keen that the character didn’t become a camp cliché. He told USA Today, “There’s been great drag queens in film. But I didn’t want to put up onscreen this cross-dressing cliché that was the butt of every joke. I hadn’t worked in a long time and I saw an opportunity there to bring to life a real person, not a cliché. I knew I was very connected [to her]. I was in character [on set], which I know is a terrible term because it brings up ideas of pretentiousness. But how could you throw it all away, go have lunch, and then ‘action’? I’d probably be terrible. I’d probably be a cliché. So I quickly transformed myself into this person.”

Leto also talked about what drew him back to acting after a four-year hiatus, telling EW that one of the reasons he was drawn to the role was because he had a gay neighbor who was dying from AIDS when he moved to LA when he was in his early 20s. “I watched week after week as he withered away, got sicker and sicker, sores on his body, his neck, and face,” says Leto. “We would sometimes walk and get lunch, or walk to the store. He had a lot of dignity and humor and levity in his situation, so I think there are parts of him in this character as well. I think for people that haven’t been around or had an experience with someone who had been affected by this disease, it’s an easy thing to forget about right now, but I felt an obligation to bring as much grace and humanity to the role as possible.”

Interestingly, despite not making any movies for years, he took little convincing to take the part. stepping in after Gael Garcia Bernal was forced to back out shortly before filming was due to begin.

Dallas Buyers Club is about Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey), who was an ordinary man who found himself in a life-or-death battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies. In 1986, Ron was blindsided by being diagnosed as HIV-positive and given 30 days to live.

With the US still internally divided over how to combat the virus and restricting medications, Ron grabbed hold of non-toxic alternative treatments from all over the world by means both legal and illegal. Seeking to avoid government sanctions against selling non-approved medicines and supplements, he established a ‘buyers club’, which fellow HIV+ people could join for access to his supplies.

Some are already saying McConaughey, who lost massive amounts of weight for the role, is likely to be nominated for an Oscar, with Leto also getting good notices. It’s out in the US in early November and will hit the US next February.

Running Time: 130 mins

Director Jeff Nichols impressed many with his film Take Shelter and has got a lot more critical acclaim for Mud. Along with his friend, Neckbone (Jacob Loflan), Ellis heads off to find a boat that’s gotten stuck in a tree during a flood. Dallas Buyers Club Trailer – Matthew McConaughey fights back against AIDS in the mid-80s

August 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It looks like Matthew McConaughey may be going for an Oscar run with The Dallas Buyers Club, losing huge amounts of weight to play Ron Woodroof, who fought back against government inaction over the introduction of HIV medication in the 1980s. Now the first trailer for the movie has arrived.

Woodroof was an ordinary man who found himself in a life-or-death battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies. In 1986, Ron was blindsided by being diagnosed as HIV-positive and given 30 days to live.

With the US still internally divided over how to combat the virus and restricting medications, Ron grabbed hold of non-toxic alternative treatments from all over the world by means both legal and illegal. Seeking to avoid government sanctions against selling non-approved medicines and supplements, he established a “buyers club,” which fellow HIV-positive people could join for access to his supplies.

Jennifer Garner, Jared Leto (as a gay transvestite, no less), Dennis Hare, Steve Zahn, Dallas Roberts and Griffin Dunne also star. Focus Features will release the movie in the US in December, while it’ll reach the UK on February 7th. [Read more…]

Wes Bentley Is The Latest To Join Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar

July 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

wes-bentleyAt this rate there won’t be a single speaking role in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar that isn’t filled by a fairly well-known name. The likes of Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Bill Irwin, Casey Affleck, Mackenzie Foy, John Lithgow and Topher Grace are already onboard, and now THR reports that American Beauty and Hunger Games star Wes Bentley has bagged a ‘meaty supporting role’ in the movie.

However, as Nolan is being predictably secretive about Interstellar, there’s absolutely no info on exactly what Bentley will be doing in the movie.

The movie revolves around a journey into outer space that pushes humanity’s knowledge of science and technology. The film was initially inspired based on the scientific theories of Kip S. Thorne, who believes that wormholes exist and can be used for time travel. Christopher Nolan is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with his brother Jonathan Nolan.

The film will shoot later this year, with a November 7th, 2014 release date already set.

The Wolf of Wall Street Trailer – Leo DiCaprio gets charmingly smarmy in Scorsese’s movie

June 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Movies about people in the financial world don’t usually sound that much fun, and to be honest on paper that was true of The Wolf Of Wall Street, but as this trailer shows, it could be incredibly entertaining in its insanity.

The based-on-a-true-story movie is about Jordan Belfort’s meteoric rise, where he made making millions selling phony stocks before he was arrested and sentenced to 22 months in prison for securities fraud. Matthew McConaughey, Jonah Hill, Kyle Chandler, Jean Dujardin, Margot Robbie, Jon Bernthal, Rob Reiner, and Jon Favreau also star.

Martin Scorsese directs from a screenplay by Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter, with a prime Oscar-bait release set for the end of the year.

And just because, take a look at a shirtless shot of Leo from the trailer below. [Read more…]

Gay-Interest Indies Kill Your Darlings & Dallas Buyers Club Get US Release Dates

June 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kill-your-darlings-daniel-radcliffe-dane-dehaanTwo of the biggest gay interest movies of the year, the Daniel Radcliffe starred Kill Your Darlings and Matthew McConaughey’s Dallas Buyers Club, has just been given their US cinema release dates.

Sony Pictures Classics has set Kill Your Darlings for a limited theatrical run starting on October 18th, with plans to roll it out nationally after that. Focus Features meanwhile has given Dallas Buyers Club a prime Oscar slot, with a release planned for December 6th.

Kill Your Darlings charts how a murder helped shape the lives of a group of young men who went on to become the beat generation. Chronicle star DeHaan plays Lucien Carr, the man who introduced Howl writer Allen Ginsberg to the likes of William S. Burroughs (Foster) and Jack Kerouac (Huston).

During these early, hedonistic days, a man called David Kammerer (Michael C. Hall) fell for Carr, with his infatuation becoming increasingly obsessive and unhinged – the gay Ginsberg once discovered Kammerer trying to murder Jack Kerouac’s cat. It eventually resulted in Carr stabbing Kammerer to death him and going to prison for his murder. The violent event is said to have indelibly changed all the people involved and etched its way into the published works of the Beat writers.

Dallas Buyers Club sees McConaughey as real-life Texas electrician Ron Woodroof, an ordinary man who found himself in a life-or-death battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies.

Jennifer Garner, Jared Leto (as a cross-dressing gay man), Steve Zahn, Dallas Robert and Griffin Dunne also star.

Jessica Chastain Joins Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar

May 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The actress will play the third lead, joining Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway in the movie. Little is known about the story, although it’s been said it’s about a journey into outer space that redefines what we know about science and technology.

Bernie (Cinema)

April 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jack Black, Matthew McConaughey, Shirley Maclaine, Brady Coleman, Richard Robichaux
Director: Richard Linklater
Running Time: 104 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: April 26th 2013

It’s taken quite a while to get Bernie to the UK. It’s almost a year since its US debut and a few months after it flirted the edges of the awards ceremonies, such as Jack Black being nominated for a Golden Globe. Now it’s here though, but has it been worth the wait?

The film is based on the true story of Bernie Tiede (Black), a quiet, God-fearing, possible gay mortician in a small Texas town. Popular with the locals due to his unfailing kindness, he manages to strike up a friendship with aging rich widow Marjorie Nugent, a woman most people think is mean and thoroughly unpleasant. McConaughey on the Dallas Buyer’s Club set

It seems Matthew McConaughey may be going on an awards run this autumn, now that Focus Features has picked up the US distribution rights to The Dallas Buyer’s Club, with plans to release the movie at the end of the year. Indie specialist Focus is well known for lobbying hard for the Oscars, so there’s a good chance they’ve already got a campaign in mind for Dallas Buyer’s Club.

The film see McConaughey as real-life Texas electrician Ron Woodroof, an ordinary man who found himself in a life-or-death battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies.

Jennifer Garner, Jared Leto, Steve Zahn, Dallas Robert and Griffin Dunne also star.

Director Jean-Marc Vallee commented, “I’m extremely pleased that we are partnered with Focus Features. They have a long and successful history of sharing memorable stories. Ron Woodroof’s story is one of an imperfect man and his fight for survival, during a confused and desperate time. We all believe that this film had to finally be made, and we are all grateful and privileged to be part of this project.”

Anne Hathaway Reuniting With Christopher Nolan For Interstellar

April 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

anne-hathawayAnne Hathaway and Christopher Nolan must have had a good time working together on The Dark Knight Rise as they’re now planning to reunite for the director’s new movie, Interstellar, according to Deadline, which will see her star alongside Matthew McConaughey.

As always with Nolan, there aren’t too many plot details available, but the story centres on an interstellar voyage that pushes the boundaries of scientific knowledge.

The project’s roots go back to 2006, when Steven Spielberg hired Jonathan Nolan, Christopher Nolan’s younger brother, to write the screenplay. The idea sprung from noted physicist Kip S. Thorne’s theory that wormholes actually exist and can be used for time travel.

Christopher Nolan has since rewritten the screenplay, which merges his own original ideas with the script that his brother Jonathan Nolan wrote. A release date of November 7th, 2014 has been set.
