Robert Downey Jr. Officially Returning For The Avengers 2 & 3

June 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

iron-man-3-teaser-poster4Iron Man 3 was the final film in Robert Downey Jr.’s deal with Marvel, meaning that if they wanted him in The Avengers 2, they’d need to get him agree to sign up. Many thought that might be difficult, as Marvel is notoriously wary of paying stars big bucks, except for RDJ, who got in early with a deal that netted him over $50 million for The Avengers.

The presumption was that Marvel would try to pay him less, but the actor would hold out for more.

However the two sides have now come to terms, and it’s been announced that Robert Downey Jr. will indeed return as Tony Stark/Iron Man in both The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3. The agreement only covers those movies, meaning that at the moment there won’t be any more stand-alone Iron Man films.

RDJ has suggested that he wants to “retire” as Tony Stark/Iron Man, but he hasn’t said when that might happen. It may well be that these two films will play out the end of the actor playing Iron Man.

Some are now wondering whether this will spur the other Avengers actors to try and get better deals. Marvel is well known for signing actors to long, multi-film deals which pay far less than most other such Hollywood contracts. So far they’ve got away with it due how keen people have been to be part of the Marvel universe, as well as the studio’s willingness to replace actors who want more cash (even Chris Evans was threatened with being canned when he tried to renegotiate). With the massive success of The Avengers and RDJ likely being paid huge bucks to return, the others may now try to get a bigger slice of the pie.

The Avengers 2 comes to theaters May 1st, 2015 with Joss Whedon directing.

Robert Downey Jr. In Talks For Avengers 2 & 3, But Iron Man 4 Is Unlikely

May 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

iron-man-3-teaser-poster4Will Robert Downey Jr. return as Iron Man? At the moment that question is up in the air, as while it’s been assumed he’ll be back for Avengers 2, his deal with Marvel has come to an end with Iron Man 2. Now THR reports the actor held a private dinner in Los Angeles a couple of nights to celebrate the success of Iron Man 3, which also marked the start of negotiations for The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3.

It appears that while the actor is open to returning for The Avengers 2 and 3, as things stand he does not want to return for a stand-alone Iron Man 4 (something that’s been echoed by other actors, such as Gwyneth Paltrow).

In April, Downey Jr. suggested he wanted to “retire” his Tony Stark character, but he didn’t leave a timetable as to when he wanted to do so.

Both the actor and Marvel now have some tough negotiations, as Downey Jr. is arguably the cornerstone of the whole Marvel universe, as the movies he’s appeared in have grossed significantly more than the ones he hasn’t. However while the studio is well known for not paying big fees to its actors, Downey is the exception to that. His current deal is believed to give him around 5% of the box office gross of an Marvel film he’s in, which earned him an estimated $50 million from The Avengers.

Marvel has previously shown that it’s willing to replace actors, such as swapping Terrence Howard for Don Cheadle following the first Iron Man movie and threatening to replace Chris Evans during contract negotiations with him. However replacing Downey Jr. with a new actor would be a massive bet. They could get that actor a lot cheaper, but may well lose out at the box office in the long run.

At the moment it looks like some sort of deal will be worked out for the actor to appear in The Avengers 2, which is due slated for release on May 1, 2015. The Avengers 3 is likely to be released in 2017, but Downey Jr.’s involvement is less certain.

Ben Stiller In Early Talks To Direct Robert Downey Jr. In Pinocchio

May 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ben-StillerMany are suggesting that The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty will completely change people’s idea of Ben Stiller as a director. Indeed, after the first footage screened last month, there was very, very early Oscar buzz. Now he may take on another huge project, as Robert Downey Jr. has Stiller is in early talks to direct a live-action version of Pinocchio for Warner Bros, according to Deadline.

Official negotiations have not begun yet, although there have been discussions with writers for this new movie. Robert Downey Jr. is currently set to star as Geppetto, and will also produce with his wife Susan Downey. Ben Stiller’s involvement sprung from an interview Robert Downey Jr. gave for Iron Man 3, where the actor-producer said he wanted Ben Stiller to direct Pinocchio, after Tim Burton’s departure.

No story details have been given, although Robert Downey Jr. wants to go in a different direction than the movie he had planned with Tim Burton. If a deal comes together, the project would mark a reunion for Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr., who worked together on the hit 2008 comedy Tropic Thunder.

The Avengers 2 Will Shoot in the UK In Early 2014

April 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

AVENGERS-assemble-new-slideshow
Marvel must have liked shooting Thor: The Dark World in the UK, as they were already planning to film Guardians Of The Galaxy in Britain later this year, and now it’s been revealed The Avengers 2 will also be coming to the UK, according to ScreenDaily.

Marvel’s The Avengers was shot entirely in the US, but the studio feels Britain is the home for the sequel. There’s no news on whether that means the sequel will be less centred on America, or if it’s purely because it’s cheaper to shoot over here.

Joss Whedon is returning to write and direct, with Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, and Mark Ruffalo all slated to return.

Other major productions that have recently shot at Pinewood-Shepperton include Maleficent, Jack Ryan and The Muppets… Again!. Disney’s live-action Cinderella is about to start shooting there in the near future.

The Avengers 2 comes to cinemas May 1st, 2015.

If he does sign on, Thornton will play the prosecutor brought in to try Duvall’s character. D’Onofrio is set for the role of Downey Jr’s older brother, who like his father has also been estranged from his sibling.
