Sam Worthington, Noomi Rapace & Idris Elba Up For Alive Alone

February 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sam WorthingtonIt’s going to be Prometheus meets Avatar although with a decidedly non sci-fi tale, as Idris Elba and Noomie Rapace, who starred in the former, are teaming up with the latter’s Sam Worthington for Alive Alone, according to THR.

Khurram Longi’s script has already had plenty of praise as it was included on the Black List and the UK’s Brit list of the best unproduced screenplays. The film will also be Longi’s directorial debut.

Elba will play ex-Guantanamo Bay detainee Jamal, who is now working as a taxi driver in New York. Rapace meanwhile is Sarah, a prostitute on the run from feared crime boss Murphy (Sam Worthington). When Sarah and Jamal’s ‘worlds collide, they unexpectedly find salvation in each other’.

It’s not clear when it will shoot.

Sabotage Red-Band Trailer – Arnold Schwarzenegger teams with Sam Worthington for some action

February 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return to the movies probably hasn’t been as big a success as he’s hoped, with lacklustre attendance for the likes of The Last Stand and Escape Plan. However he’ll be hoping that by returning to what looks like a bit of a lean, mean action movie, with a good director (David Ayer – Training Day, End of Watch) and a strong cast including Sam Worthington, Josh Holloway, Terrence Howard and Harold Perrineau, more people will be interested.

Now we can take a look with a red-band trailer for Sabotage.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In “Sabotage”, Arnold Schwarzenegger leads an elite DEA task force that takes on the world’s deadliest drug cartels. When the team successfully executes a high-stakes raid on a cartel safe house, they think their work is done – until, one-by-one, the team members mysteriously start to be eliminated. As the body count rises, everyone is a suspect.’

The movie due out March 28th in the US and May 9th in the UK. [Read more…]

Sam Worthington & Zoe Saldana Both Back For Three Avatar Sequels

January 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

avatar-posterWhile Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana signed up for more than one Avatar movie when they first agreed to appear in the record-grossing movie, it’s believed the time it’s taken to get a follow-up ready has resulted in their deals lapsing and they weren’t contracted for the three more films that James Cameron now has planned anyway.

That said, it’s still not too surprising that Worthington and Saldana have finalised deals to appear in all three Avatar sequels, which will be shot back-to-back with Avatar 2 arriving in December of 2016, followed by Avatar 3 in 2017 and Avatar 4 in 2018.

The only actor we’ve officially known would be back before is Stephen Lang, who played the villain Marine Colonel Quaritch. As his character died at the end of the first movie, its not known how he’ll be resurrected.

Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are penning the third installment, while Shane Salerno is tackling the fourth film, all working from the overall story arc that James Cameron came up with. While it’s known the films will return to Pandora, no story details have officially been revealed. However it’s been said the film will explore far more of Pandora and it’s believed Jake Sully and Neytiri will have had kids.

James Cameron commented,”Jake Sully is a rare combination of passion, strength, street smarts and soul, which requires a lot from an actor. Sam brought to the role a combination of sensitivity, vulnerability and strength. Zoe captured every aspect of the character I envisioned, bringing to Neytiri a mix of delicacy, fierceness and incredible physicality. I am beyond pleased they’ll be returning with us to Pandora.” (Source: THR)

Sam Worthington, Jim Sturgess & Ryan Kwanten Up For Freddy Heineken

Not too long ago Rutger Hauer starred in a movie about the kidnapping of Freddy Heineken. Now Hollywood is taking on the subject, according to Variety, with Sam Worthington, Jim Sturgess, Ryan Kwanten and Anthony Hopkins have signed on to star.

Called Kidnapping Freddy Heineken, the film is about the true story of Dutch beer mogul Alfred “Freddy” Heineken (Hopkins), who was kidnapped along with his driver Ab Doderer in 1983. They were both released after the ransom of a whopping 35 Dutch guilders was paid, which is the equivalent of $50 million today. The abductors were eventually caught and prosecuted. It isn’t known what characters Worthington, Kwanten and Sturgess will play, although there’s a good chance they’ll be kidnapper. Tom Cocquerel and Mark van Eeuwen are also starring in unspecified roles.

Daniel Alfredson (The Girl Who Played with Fire, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest) is directing from a script by William Brookfield (Rough Magic). Shooting is scheduled to begin later this month in Belgium, before shooting shifts to Amsterdam and New Orleans.

Jonathan Mostow Is Going For The Dogs, Directing The Sam Worthington Film

August 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jonathan-MostowLast January, Philip Noyce signed up to direct Sam Worthington in the thriller For The Dogs. However he’s now left the project and been replaced by Terminator 3 and Surrogates helmer Jonathan Mostow, according to Variety.

The film is based on Kevin Wignall’s novel about a lone assassin who agrees to help a bright college girl (Hailee Steinfeld) exact revenge on those who mercilessly murdered her parents and younger brother.

Oren Moverman wrote the script (working from Paul Leyden’s earlier draft). It’s not clear when it will shoot. Earlier this year they were hoping to shoot towards the end of 2013, but Steinfeld is currently due to start filming Barely Lethal in October, while Worthington will likely be heading for the Avatar sequel set early next year. So presumably the plan is to slot it into between those films.

James Cameron Hires Josh Friedman To Help With The Avatar 2 Script

August 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

James Cameron has been working on Avatar 2 & 3 ever since the first film hit it big, but it’s only fairly recently he got properly busy on the script (he’d spent most of the time getting the technical side ready). Now he’s decided to draft in a little help, as The Wrap reports that he’s hired Josh Friedman to help polish the screenplay for the second movie.

Friedman has a history of following on from Cameron’s work, as he created TV’s Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (a show it was though Cameron wasn’t too thrilled about when it started airing).

Nobody has confirmed the story yet, but it’s not a surprising development as it’s known Cameron brought in help on the first film, and with Fox still pushing for a later 2015 release for Avatar 2, they need to get the screenplay ready as soon as possible, as filming will have to begin relatively quickly.

Hailee Steinfeld Is Going For The Dogs With Sam Worthington

May 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hailee-steinfeldIn 2010 Hailee Steinfeld scored an Oscar nomination for True Grit, but since then we’ve had the grand total of absolutely no movies from her. That’s not to say she hasn’t been busy though, as she’s got five films in post-production, with various others in the works. Now she’s added another, as Deadline reports Steinfeld has joined the cast of Phillip Noyce’s thriller, For the Dogs.

She’ll star alongside Sam Worthington, who signed up a couple of months ago. The movie is based on a 2007 novel by Kevin Wignall, about a teenager (Steinfeld) who is orphaned after her parents are murdered. She seeks the assistance of an assassin (Worthington) to avenge their deaths, and while the lone assassin is looking for peace and an exit from the tension-filled lifestyle, the girl’s bloodthirst develops, complicating matters quite a bit.

It doesn’t sound too far from True Grit, although rather more contemporary. There’s no news on when it might shoot.

Sam Worthington Enters American Civil War Drama The Keeping Room

April 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sam WorthingtonSam Worthington has to spend much of his life trying to slot in as many movies as he can while waiting for James Cameron to finally say he’s ready to shoot Avatar 2 & 3. It seems he thinks he’s got some time until that happens yet, as he’s signed up for the American Civil War drama, The Keeping Room, according to Deadline.

Brit Marling, Hailee Steinfeld and Nicole Beharie will also star.

The site says the film is, ‘Set in the dying days of the Civil War, Worthington plays a soldier who has broken off from the fast-approaching Union Army and encounters women who have been left to fend for themselves.’ There’s no info on what he does when he finds those women, though.

Harry Brown helmer Daniel Barber will direct, working from a script by Julia Hart. Shooting is due to kick off in June,

Drift Trailer – Sam Worthington & Xavier Samuel go surfing

December 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sam Worthington has gone back to Australia and gotten himself a wig (at least we hope it’s a wig) for the surf themes drama Drift. Myles Pollard and Xavier Samuel take the lead roles, with Worthington supporting.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Australia, 1970s. The Kelly brothers, Andy and Jimmy (Pollard and Samuel), have one great passion: riding big waves. As kids, their mother escaped from Sydney to Margaret River, a sleepy coastal town with some of the world’s most challenging and dangerous waves. For the next 12 years, the boys perfected their surfing skills, always searching for the perfect ride. Free-spirited Jimmy is a gifted surfer and innovator but he starts to slip toward a life of crime to help the family out of debt. Andy makes a big decision. Quitting a stable job, he bets on Jimmy’s surf inventions and his own business skills and launches a backyard surf gear business. They rethink board design, craft homemade wetsuits and sell their merchandise out of their van.

‘Encouraged by their new friends, travelling bohemian surf photographer and filmmaker JB (Sam Worthington) and his gorgeous Hawaiian surfer companion, Lani, who stirs the two brothers’ hearts, they start to seek ways to expand. After they get mixed up with a local drug dealer, it looks like everything they built up, will be ruined… Set in breathtaking locations and inspired by the true story of Australia’s legendary surfwear moguls, the film chronicles the rise of surf brands and the expansion of the laidback surf attitude as a global lifestyle. A story of passion and corruption, friendship and loyalty, deadly addictions and fractured relationships, DRIFT tells a tale of courage and the will to survive against all odds.’

It hits Aussie cinemas in 2013, but no UK release date has been set yet.
