New Turbo Trailer – Fast & Furious meets, err, snails

July 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Turbo is certainly based on a slightly odd idea – a snail competes in the Indy 500 car race – but DreamWorks Animation’s movie does look like it might be fun.

The movie follows Theo, a snail who dreams of being a racer. A strange accident grants him his wish, allowing him to go at super-speeds. He then teams up with a group of fellow speed-obsessed snails and a taco truck owner to try to compete in the Indy 500.

The film has a great voice cast, including Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Paul Giamatti, Ken Jeong (as a cantankerous woman), Michael Pena, Luis Guzman, Richard Jenkins, Bill Hader, Michelle Rodriguez, Ben Schwartz, Kurtwood Smith, Snoop Lion and Maya Rudolph.

It’s out in the US on July 17th and will reach the UK in October. [Read more…]

Samuel L. Jackson Is Barely Lethal Alongside Hailee Steinfeld

May 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

samuel-l-jacksonSamuel L. Jackson is going to be training kids to be killers, at least he will if he closes a deal to star in Barely Lethal, which Variety reports he’s in talks for. Assuming he does sign on, he’ll join Hailee Steinfeld in the movie.

The film is about Megan (Steinfeld), a 16-year-old girl who has been raised at an elite boarding school that trains teenage assassins. She decides to fake her own death and enroll at a local high school to get a taste of “normal” high school life, which she soon learns is not all it’s cracked up to be. Samuel L. Jackson will play Megan’s mentor and trainer.

Kyle Newman (Fanboys) is directing from a screenplay by John D’Arco. It isn’t clear when it will shoot.

Samuel L. Jackson To Play The US President In Big Game

May 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

samuel-l-jacksonThere are a lot of people out there who’d love Samuel L. Jackson to be the US President. Now they’ll get to see that come true, on-screen at least, as Variety reports that Jackson has signed up to be the Pres in the thriller, Big Game.

Finnish Rare Exports director Jalmari Helander will make his English-language debut with the movie, which ‘tells the story of Oskari, a shy, nervous 13-year-old boy, who must prove his manhood by spending a day and a night alone in the forest. That night, Air Force One is shot down by terrorists and Oskari discovers the US President in an escape pod. With the terrorists closing in, Oskari and the President must team up to survive.’

Altitude, the company behind the movie, describes it as an “adrenaline-fuelled action adventure that takes the universal rite-of-passage theme of iconic 80s films, such as ‘E.T.’ and ‘The Karate Kid,’ and brilliantly combines this with the visceral thrill of high-concept action classics such as ‘Die Hard’ and ‘Taken.’”

That’s quite a mix of movies, and I’d be willing to bet it’s not really like any of those film.

Filming will start this summer in Finland and Germany.

Robert Redford Eyes Captain America: The Winter Soldier Role

March 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

robert-redfordRobert Redford isn’t a name you’d have thought would be in contention for a Marvel’s superhero movie, but Deadline reports that he’s now in talks for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. If he does sign on, Redford would portray a senior leader at the S.H.I.E.L.D. organisation, although no further details have been given.

There already speculation that as with Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, Redford’s character may be popping up in future Marvel movies, leading up to a more pivotal role in Avengers 2, although that has not been confirmed yet.

Chris Evans is set to once more play Steve Rogers/Captain America, with a story set in the present day after Marvel’s The Avengers (as opposed to Captain America’s WWII storyline). Anthony Russo and Joe Russo are directing from a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The movie will shoot later this year, probably in the UK.

Callan McAuliffe & India Eisley Join Samuel L. Jackson In Kite

February 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

callan-mcauliffeYoung Aussie Callan McAuliffe didn’t really get the career boost from I Am Number Four that he was hoping for, but he’ll be hoping he gets more notice this summer playing the younger version of Leo DiCaprio’s title character in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby.

Now he’s got a new film in the offing, as Variety reports that he’s signed up for Kite, based on a Japanese anime film. India Eisley will also star in the movie, joining the previously cast Samuel L. Jackson.

The film is about a young woman who lives in a failed nation state after the financial collapse, where a corrupt security force profits on the trafficking of young women. When her policeman father is killed, she vows to track the murderer down with the help of his ex-partner. In the original anime, she is initially ‘helped’ by the two corrupt cops on the case of the double homicide, Akai and Kanie, who take her in as guardians and end up turning her into an assassin.

Eisley will play the girl while McAuliffe is he childhood friend who comes to the rescue, with Jackson as the ex-partner.

There’s also been a change of director, with Ralph Ziman taking over from David R. Ellis, who tragically died early last month.

Samuel L. Jackson Joins Japanese Anime Adaptation Kite

December 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

samuel-l-jacksonAt the age of 63, Samuel L. Jackson is as busy as ever, and now he’s signed up for a new film, David R. Ellis’ live action adaptation of the Japanese anime Kite, according to Movies.com.

The original anime is a post-apocalyptic thriller that focuses on a young orphaned girl who embarks on a quest to seek revenge on her parents’ killer. She is initially ‘helped’ by the two corrupt cops on the case of the double homicide, Akai and Kanie, who take her in as guardians and end up turning her into an assassin. However soon she meets another assassin, and strikes out with his aid to find the murderers. It isn’t known which role Jackson is taking.

The actor commented, “After RoboCop, I’m going to do this live-action version of Kite, the Japanese anime. I’ll be doing a live-action version of that in Johannesburg.”

It’s not clear when the movie might shoot. This isn’t the first time Ellis and Jackson have worked together, as they made Snakes On A Plane back in 2006.

David Yates’ Tarzan Eyes Alexander Skarsgard & Samuel L. Jackson

November 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week is was revealed that Harry Potter director David Yates was planning on direct a new version of Tarzan for Warner Bros. Things seem to be moving quickly, as the filmmaker is already looking at actors to play the title character, with Variety reporting that Alexander Skarsgard is the current frontrunner, with Samuel L. Jackson in talks for a supporting role.

Last week it was suggested that Henry Cavill and Charlie Hunnam were the top contenders for the role along with Skarsgard, although it seems the studio and director has now decided on the True Blood star. A formal offer has not been issued to the actor as of yet. Skarsgard’s 6’4″ frame and physique are believed to be factors that lead to the studio’s decision.

Variety says Skarsgard ‘would play John Clayton III, known around the world as the famous “ape man” Tarzan. Years after he’s re-assimilated into society, he’s asked by Queen Victoria to investigate the goings-on in the Congo. Tarzan teams with an ex-mercenary named George Washington Williams to save the Congo from a fierce warlord who controls a massive diamond mine.

‘Samuel L. Jackson is being eyed to play Williams, a Civil War veteran eager to redeem himself for his part in the massacre of Native Americans.’

It isn’t known when it might shoot.

Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders & Scarlett Johannson On For Captain America 2

October 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Yesterday, it was confirmed that Frank Grillo will play Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Now there’s some more casting news, which lets us know some familiar faces will be back for the film, as Variety reports that The Avengers stars Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, and Cobie Smulders will reprise their roles for this stand-alone sequel.

Captain America: The First Avenger star Sebastian Stan will also be back as Bucky Barnes, who turns into The Winter Soldier. You may be wondering how that’s possible if you’ve seen the first movie, but his return in a new form is one of the main aspects of the plot.

It isn’t known how integral the return of the S.H.I.E.L.D agents will be, or indeed if with a S.H.I.E.L.D TV show be planned, they will try and tie the events in the movie into that series.

Marvel has also issued a casting call for actors in Los Angeles and Cleveland, for both principal and extra roles. Production begins March 1, 2013, with shooting to take place in Los Angeles, Cleveland, and Washington D.C.

Five Django Unchained Character Posters Debut

October 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sony has released five new character posters for Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming Django Unchaines, featuring Jamie Foxx’s Django, Christoph Waltz’s Dr. King Waltz, Sam Jackson’s Stephen, Kerry Washington’s Broomhilda and Leo DiCaprio’s Calvin Candie. You can take a look at them above and below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set in the South two years before the Civil War, DJANGO UNCHAINED stars Academy Award®-winner Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Academy Award®-winner Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles – dead or alive.

‘Success leads Schultz to free Django, though the two men choose not to go their separate ways. Instead, Schultz seeks out the South’s most wanted criminals with Django by his side. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago.

‘Django and Schultz’s search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Academy Award®-nominee Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of “Candyland,” an infamous plantation where slaves are groomed by trainer Ace Woody (Kurt Russell) to battle each other for sport. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz arouse the suspicion of Stephen (Academy Award®-nominee Samuel L. Jackson), Candie’s trusted house slave. Their moves are marked, and a treacherous organization closes in on them. If Django and Schultz are to escape with Broomhilda, they must choose between independence and solidarity, between sacrifice and survival…

‘Written and directed by Academy Award®-winner Quentin Tarantino, DJANGO UNCHAINED is produced by Stacey Sher, Pilar Savone and Reginald Hudlin. The executive producers are Harvey and Bob Weinstein, Michael Shamberg, Shannon McIntosh, and James Skotchdopole. DJANGO UNCHAINED will be released in the U.S. on December 25, 2012, and internationally by Sony Pictures Releasing International.’ It will reach the UK on January 28th, 2013.

Samuel L Jackson Joins Spike Lee’s Oldboy Remake

August 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although there are still many who wish the idea of remaking Oldboy would just die a quiet death, Spike Lee’s do-over continues to move forward with the news, via The Playlist, that Samuel L. Jackson is set to appear in the film.

It appears Jackson will play a villain who is brutally tortured by Josh Brolin’s character – a man who has been detained by mysterious adversaries for years with no explanation, who after his release seeks revenge and tries to find out the reason why he was locked up. In Park Chan-Wook’s original movie, Jackson’s character was memorably tortured by having his teeth removed. Spike’s movie won’t use the teeth, but there’s something just as wicked promised.

It’s also been revealed that Bruce Hornsby will write the score. The piano virtuoso has a long-standing relationship with Spike, having composed the scores for the directors’ documentary, Kobe Doin’ Work, and his new film, Red Hook Summer.
