X-Men: Days of Future Past Trailer – Can one film handle this many famous mutants?

March 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

X-Men: Days of Future Past always looked like it was gonna be a big movie, but it’s not until this trailer that we’ve been able to see just how massive it is. The idea of the two X-Men casts coming together is exciting enough, but that’s only one part of this trailer, which really piled on some enormous effects-filled set-pieces.

Now we can’t wait until the movie’s May release.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. The beloved characters from the original “X-Men” film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from “X-Men: First Class,” in an epic battle that must change the past – to save our future.’

Take a look at the trailer where the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Ian McKellen, James McAvoy, Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Ellen Page, Nicholas Hoult, Peter Dinklage and Halle Berry are only the beginning of the new and old faces we’ll get to see.

Oh, and enjoy the new poster below. [Read more…]

Ian McKellen Reflects On X-Men’s Strong Parallels To Gay Rights

February 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

x-men-day-of-future-past-character-pic5For a long time people have compared the mutants of X-Men to the gay rights struggle – a group of people whose inborn difference separates them from society and who have to battle a society who are prejudiced against them just because of who they think they may be rather than who they actually are.

It’s something the X-Men movies haven’t shied away from, although while the first two films were directed by the gay Bryan Singer, the LGBT parallels were probably highest in the Bret Ratner helmed X-Men: The Last Stand. In that the mutants had to decide whether to accept a ‘cure’ to their powers or fight back and be proud of who they are. (Ironically Ratner has since been embroiled in accusations of homophobia.)

Now Ian McKellen has been talking about the links between the superheroes and all things gay. Buzzfeed quotes him as saying about how he first became involved in the movies as Megneto, “I was sold it by Bryan [Singer] who said, ‘Mutants are like gays. They’re cast out by society for no good reason… And, as in all civil rights movements, they have to decide: Are they going to take the Xavier [Patrick Stewart] line — which is to somehow assimilate and stand up for yourself and be proud of what you are, but get on with everybody — or are you going to take the alternative view [McKellen’s character’s] — which is, if necessary, use violence to stand up for your own rights. And that’s true. I’ve come across that division within the gay rights movement.”

McKellen believes it’s no surprise that, according to Marvel, young Jewish, Black, and gay people are the biggest readers of the X-Men comics. “These are all people who, well, feel a little bit like mutants,” he says.

As for whether it’s worth being out and proud, he says, “I feel sorry for anyone who feels the need to lie about themselves. That’s not good for you. It doesn’t lead to a happy life. And I’ve never met a gay person who came out and who regretted it. Never. So, my advice to anyone in the closet — it doesn’t matter whether they’re a teacher, or a politician, or a priest, or an actor — come out. Join the human race.”

He adds of his own life, “I often thought my gravestone would say, ‘Here lies Gandalf. He came out… Those are two of the proudest achievements that I’ve got. I think I’ve been a part of the rapid sensible movement towards an understanding that gay people are the same as the rest of you and should be treated equally by the law, by society.”

First Look At Evan Peters As Quicksilver In X-Men: Days of Future Past

January 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

x-men-days-of-future-past-ew-pic1There’s an interesting situation with Marvel character Quicksilver, as while normally movie deals mean only one studio can make use of that person, he is set to appear in both Fox’s X-Men: Days Of Future Past and Marvel’s The Avengers 2. However he’ll be played by different actors, and due to the terms of the deals, Avengers can’t mention his X-Men heritage, while X-Men can’t say he’ll one days join up with a superhero team.

Days Of Future Past will be our first taste of Quicksilver, with American Horror Story’s Evan Peters taking the role. Now we get our first look at him in the part, although he is sadly slightly in the background, alongside Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Hugh Jackman. There’s also another new photo below from Entertainment Weekly, featuring Wolverine and Beast (Nicholas Hoult).

Quicksilver has superhuman speed, so expect plenty of slow-motion shots (filmed at 3,600 frames a second!) when Days Of Future past hits this summer. The character will be played by Aaron Johnson in The Avengers 2.

Anna Paquin Cut From X-Men: Days of Future Past

December 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

anna-paquin-rogueAs X-Men: Days Of Future Past went into production it seemed there were almost too many mutants for one film, with nearly all the original cast as well as their First Class counterparts signed up. Now it seems there simply isn’t time for all of them, as director Bryan Singer has revealed that Anna Paquin’s Rogue has already ended up on the cutting room floor.

Singer told EW  Paquin was due to be part of a rescue sequence that was shot early in the film’s production schedule. It also featured Magneto (Ian McKellen), Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Iceman (Shawn Ashmore).

However, he added, “Through the editing process, the sequence became extraneous. It’s a really good sequence and it will probably end up on the DVD so people can see it. But like many things in the editing process, it was an embarrassment of riches and it was just one of the things that had to go. Unfortunately, it was the one and only sequence Anna Paquin was in, the Rogue character was in. Even though she’s in the materials and part of the process of making the film, she won’t appear in it.”

He did want to add that the decision had nothing to do with her performance.”She did a fantastic job,” Singer says. “She was awesome in the sequence. She’s a brilliant actress. I would work with her in a heartbeat.”

He told Paquin the news personally, and .”She completely understood. It’s very disappointing, but she’s very professional and she knows that stuff happens, particularly with material you shoot early on in production. Films evolve.”

The news also confirms that some of the original cast will have little more than cameos, and it’s possible a couple more may not make the final cut. We’ll have to see who ends up in the film when it’s released next May.

Bryan Singer Reportedly Directing X-Men: Apocalypse

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bryan-singerLast week, director Bryan Singer revealed to a world via a Tweet that X-Men: Apocalypse is in the works and coming Summer 2016. However there wasn’t a huge amount more information, and we didn’t know if Singer was directing or just producing.

Now Vulture has apparently confirmed that Singer will indeed be at the helm of the upcoming mutant adventure. It’s also believed that the movie will focus primarily on the X-Men: First Class characters, led by James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as Professor X and Magneto.

A separate report also suggests that while in the comics, Apocalypse is suggested to be connected to aliens (in some incarnations at least), in the movie he will be earthly. X-Men: Apocalypse comes to theaters May 27th, 2016. The film is directed by Bryan Singer.

Bryan Singer Announces X-Men: Apocalypse For 2016

December 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bryan-singerIt’s been clear for a while that Fox wants to build X-Men into as big and as frequent a franchise as it can, but there’s been no news on what was coming after next year’s X-Men: Days Of Future Past. However Bryan Singer has now let some news slip, simply tweeting “#Xmen #Apocalypse 2016!”

Fox seems to have confirmed the news, with Exhibitor Relations tweeting, ‘No stopping the X-Men franchise. Fox’s X-MEN: APOCALYPSE will drop May 27, 2016.’

In the X-Men mythology, Apocalypse is an 5,000 year old mutant with all sorts of powers emanating from the fact he can control all the molecules in his body – meaning he can shape-shift, has superhuman power, can interface with technology and his regeneration abilities have allowed him to live for millennia.

However, what’s not know at the moment is whether the villainous Apocalypse will be going up against the First Class mutants, the original cast, a mix of the two, or indeed if this will be the start of a brand new spin-off.

Take A Look At The Entire X-Men: Days Of Future Past Cast Together At Comic-Con

July 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

X-Men-days-of-future-past-cast-photoFor the X-Men panel at Comic-Con, Fox decided the best thing to do was bring the entire main cast of the upcoming X-Men: Days Of Future Past together, which led to the image above, tweeted by director Bryan Singer.

There was also footage and info about the movie, including confirmation that it’s Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine who’ll be the one travelling from a bleak, dystopian future where mutants have been rounded up and are monitored by the robotic sentinels. An older Xavier and Magneto (Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen), send him back to the 1970s to convince their younger selves (James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender) they must do something to prevent this future from ever happening.

The movie hits cinemas summer 2014.

Lucas Till Returns For X-Men: Days Of Future Past

July 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lucas-till-x-men-days-of-future-past-tweet
While a lot of people from both the earlier X-Men films and First Class have been confirmed to be coming back for X-Men: Days Of Future Past, there’s been no news on Lucas Till, who played Alex Summer/Havok in First Class.

Now Bryan Singer has confirmed that he will indeed return, tweeting a picture of the actor on the set, along with the message, ‘”Mankind must put an end to war before war puts an end to mankind.” -JFK’

That quote and the military uniform seems to suggest that Havok is going into battle, and as he’s surrounded by what appear to be other mutants, it’s possible he’s in Vietnam as part of a secret X-unit in the early 70s.

It also appears some other details about the movie have leaked, including info on exactly who will be time-travelling in the movie. The plot revolves around the First Class mutants getting a message brought to them from the future, with info that they must prevent an assassination in order to stop events unfolding that result in mutants being locked up in concentration camps, and the terrifying sentinels monitoring the Earth.

If you wants to know those leaked plot details, head over to Vulture.

Plenty more info about the film is promised at the film’s panel happens on Saturday at Comic-Con, with Fox hoping to get us excited for the film’s July 18th 2014 release.
