Christian Bale May Be Steve Jobs For Danny Boyle

October 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Christian BaleShortly after Steve Jobs died it looked like there was going to be a real race to see which of two biopics would make it to cinemas first. While the Ashton Kutcher starring Job is already over a year old, the one with a script by Aaron Sorkin is still in the works.

Back in April Danny Boyle signed up to direct, and now he may have snared his lead – a man rumoured for the role some time ago who now appears to be coming aboard, Christian Bale. Boyle had been in talks with Leo DiCaprio, but when things stalled they went back to Bale, who seems interested, according to THR.

The Steve Jobs biopic will be based on Walter Isaacson’s biography, which was written following numerous interview with the man himself and those around him. Sorkin has said that the movie will centre around three key speeches, where Jobs announced the innovative Apple products Mac, NeXT, and the original iPod. Apple’s other co-founder, Steve Wozniak, is serving as a consultant on the film.

Leonardo DiCaprio Circling Steve Jobs Biopic, With Danny Boyle In Talks To Direct

April 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

leonardo-dicaprio-shirtless-wolf-of-wall-streetThings went a bit sideways last week when David Fincher left the planned biopic of Steve Jobs, which Social Network screenwriter Aaron Sorkin has been working on the script for. The issue appears to have been Fincher demands over pay and control, which Sony wasn’t willing to bend to.

However now things are moving forward once again, with THR reporting that Danny Boyle is in talks to direct the movie, and the filmmaker has already approached Leonardo DiCaprio to play the late Apple co-founder. Danny Boyle and Leonardo DiCaprio previously worked together on The Beach.

The Steve Jobs biopic will be based on Walter Isaacson’s biography, which was based on numerous interview with the man himself and those around him. Sorking has said that the movie will centre three key speeches, where Jobs announced the innovative Apple products Mac, NeXT, and the original iPod. Apple’s other co-founder, Steve Wozniak, is serving as a consultant on the film.

No deal is currently set with either Boyle or DiCaprio, and there may be issues with DiCaprio’s schedule, as he recently committed to The Revenant, which starts shooting in September.

Danny Boyle Working On Billie Jean King ‘Battle Of The Sexes’ Biopic

February 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

danny-boyleDanny Boyle may have decided on a new movie as PageSix reports that the director is thinking of reteaming with Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours writer Simon Beaufoy and producer Christian Colson on a biopic of tennis legend Billie Jean King.

The movie will focus on her match against Bobby Riggs in 1973, which was recently the subject of the documentary The Battle of the Sexes. After self-proclaimed chauvinist Bobby Riggs’ declarated that the female game was inferior and that a top woman player couldn’t beat him even at the age of 55, he challenged King to a match, but she declined. Margaret Court then the top female player in the world – but lost in straight sets, seemingly confirming Riggs’ claims.

King wasn’t going to stand for that and agreed to play Bobby in what became a nationally televised media sensation.

It was an important time in King’s life for another reason too, as for the first time she’s relatively recently become involved in a relationship with a woman, even though she was still married to a man at the time.

Boyle and Beaufoy have apparently already met with King and plans to have more meeting as they get to work on the script. It’s now known if this will be his next movie, but a Danny Boyle sports biopic would certainly be interesting.

Danny Boyle Takes On Heist Flick Smash and Grab

October 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

danny-boyleDanny Boyle has picked his next film and this one is based on a documentary. Following Trance, he’s returning to the heist genre, signing up to direct Smash and Grab, according to Variety. The film is a narrative adaptation of the recent documentary, Smash & Grab: The Story of The Pink Panthers, directed by Havana Marking.

Here’s the documentary’s official synopsis: ‘Their crimes resemble high-octane Hollywood action movies: a sports car speeds through a Dubai shopping mall, crashing into the windows of a Graff jewelry store. Masked, gun-wielding men jump out of the car, and stuff fistfuls of diamonds into their satchels before screeching off. In London, they took all of three minutes to make off with $30 million in diamonds. They are captured not in person, but on surveillance tapes that record their astonishing lightning strikes with hypnotic accuracy.

‘Playing out like a noir thriller spiced with cutting-edge animation and shocking real surveillance footage, Havana Marking’s Smash & Grab is an exclusive all-access pass into the mysterious world of international jewel thieves. Dubbed The Pink Panthers, the formidable Balkan gang has stolen nearly a billion dollars worth of jewels from boutiques in the world’s most opulent cities, including Geneva, Paris, London, Dubai and Tokyo. Through never-before-seen interviews with key gang members, this provocative documentary delves into the gang’s incredible history and introduces the viewer to the global police forces who work furiously to stop them. Beyond the glitz of the Panthers’ incredible heists, Smash & Grab exposes dark truths about the illicit diamond trade and the world’s most ruthless mafia networks.’

It’s a tale that certainly sounds made for cinema and Boyle could have a lot of fun with it. Boyle apparently saw the documentary and became interested in making a feature based on it. Pathe and Fox Searchlight will co-produce and co-finance the adaptation.

Danny Boyle looks like he could have another hit on his hand with Trance, which reaches UK cinemas on March 27th. Now three character posters for the film have debuted, giving us a look at James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson and Vincent Cassel.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Following the spectacular London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, Academy Award® winning director Danny Boyle returns to the big screen with this psychological thriller about a fine art auctioneer, mixed up with a criminal gang, who join forces with a hypnotherapist to recover a lost painting.

‘TRANCE stars James McAvoy (Atonement, X-Men First Class), Vincent Cassel (Black Swan, Mesrine) and Rosario Dawson (Seven Pounds, Sin City). The film re-unites Boyle with many of his frequent collaborators including screenwriter John Hodge (Trainspotting, Shallow Grave) and Underworld’s Rick Smith who has composed the original score.’

Trance Red Band Trailer – Going inside James McAvoy’s mind

February 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

trance-poster1It looks like Danny Boyle’s Trance is going to be a lot more gory than you might expect, especially if you know the premise, which sounds like a pretty standard thriller. However this new Red Band trailer shows us we’re going inside James McAvoy’s mind for some strange sights, where not even having half his head blown off can stop Vincent Cassel’s character.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Simon (James McAvoy), a fine art auctioneer, teams up with a criminal gang to steal a Goya painting worth millions of dollars, but after suffering a blow to the head during the heist he awakens to discover he has no memory of where he hid the painting. When physical threats and torture fail to produce answers, the gang’s leader Frank (Vincent Cassel) hires hypnotherapist Elizabeth Lamb (Rosario Dawson) to delve into the darkest recesses of Simon’s psyche. As Elizabeth begins to unravel Simon’s broken subconscious, the line between truth, suggestion, and deceit begin to blur.’ [Read more…]

New Posters: Danny Boyle’s Trance, Place Beyond The Pines & Burt Wonderstone

January 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

trance-poster1
Some great new posters have popped up online overnight, giving us fresh look at Danny Boyle’s upcoming Trance, as well as the Ryan Gosling starrer The Place Beyond The Pines and Steve Carell’s magical comedy Burt Wonderstone.

The Trance poster above is pretty cool. It’s a US promo released at the same time an April 5th American release date has been announced, although us Brits will be getting it a little earlier on March 27th. James McAvoy plays an auction house assistant who masterminds an art heist and teams up with a gang of thieves, but suffers a blow to the head and wakes up with amnesia. He is the only one who knows where the stolen painting is and after his continued failure to remember, the gang begins to suspect duplicity on his part and hire a female hypnotist (Rosario Dawson) to get into his brain.

Take a look at the Burt Wonderstone and Place Beyond The Pines posters below.

burt-wonderstone-poster5
While I know Vegas magicians look a little fake and glossy, it’s a bit odd to produce a poster where you can only half recognise the main stars – Steve Carell, Jim Carrey and Steve Buscemi. Here’s the synopsis: ‘Superstar magicians Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell) and Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) have ruled the Las Vegas strip for years, raking in millions with illusions as big as Burt’s growing ego. But lately the duo’s greatest deception is their public friendship, while secretly they’ve grown to loathe each other. Facing cutthroat competition from guerilla street magician Steve Gray (Jim Carrey), whose cult followingsurges with each outrageous stunt, even their show looks stale. But there’s still a chance Burt and Anton can save the act—both onstage and off—if Burt can get back in touch with what made him love magic in the first place.’

Place-Beyond-the-Pines-poster1
The Place Beyond The Pines reunites Ryan Gosling with Blue Valentine helmer Derek Cianfrance. In the film, Luke (Ryan Gosling) is a professional motorcycle rider who turns to bank robberies to support his newborn son. But when he crosses paths with a rookie police officer (Bradley Cooper), their violent confrontation spirals into a tense generational feud.

Trance Trailer – First look at James McAvoy in Danny Boyle’s film

January 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’ve previously written about Trance’s interesting production process, where Danny Boyle shot the movie in late 2011, then went off to put the Olympic Opening Ceremony together, before going back to do post-production on the movie. Now it’s March 27th release is approaching and the first rather stylish and fast-paced trailer had arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Academy Award® winning director Danny Boyle returns to the big screen with this psychological thriller about a fine art auctioneer, mixed up with a criminal gang, who join forces with a hypnotherapist to recover a lost painting. TRANCE stars James McAvoy (Atonement, X-Men First Class), Vincent Cassel (Black Swan, Mesrine) and Rosario Dawson (Seven Pounds, Sin City).’

First Pics Of James McAvoy & Rosario Dawson In Danny Boyle’s Trance

December 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

trance-preview-pic2Trance has had a slightly unusual production process, as it was shot during late 2011, but then director Danny Boyle had to go off and put together the Olympics Opening Ceremony, and so the editing and other post production was put on hold until the summer festivities were over.

Now he’s had a chance to start putting it together and the first photos from the film have been released via USA Today. The new movie is about an art heist gone wrong, and will mark his return to the ‘dark, sexy, hard-edged tone’ seen in such earlier work as Shallow Grave and Trainspotting.

The film is due out March 27th 2013.
