After the end of the First World War, former soldier Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) takes a job as the keeper of an isolated lighthouse off the coast of Australia. While he’s hoping for some time alone, he’s surprised to find romance with the young Isabel (Alicia Vikander), who soon becomes his wife. Their happiness on the remote island is hampered by the fact she loses several children during pregnancy.

Fate then intervenes when a boat washes up on the shore with a dead man and a live baby in it. While Tom knows he must signal the mainland about this unexpected development, his wife realises that if they stay silent, no one is likely to question whether the child was theirs or not. After deciding to keep the baby girl, Tom accidentally discovers whose child it really is, and that there’s a grieving mother on the mainland. [Read more…]

Michael Fassbender In Talks For Derek Cianfrance’s Light Between Oceans

May 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-fassbender-gq-pic7-slideDerek Cianfrance’s last couple of movies have had Ryan Gosling in the lead (Place Between The Pines and Blue Valentine), but now he’s found a new leading man as TheWrap reports Michael Fassbender is in talks for The Light Between Oceans, which DreamWorks is backing.

The film will be based on the debut novel from M.L. Stedman, which takes place on a remote Australian island after World War I, where a lighthouse keeper and his wife face a moral dilemma when a dead man and a two-month-old infant wash up in a boat on shore.

It isn’t 100% clear when it will shoot, although it’s believed it may film in Australia. Rumours suggest that Fassbender may make this movie and then move onto Prometheus 2, although others suggest it’ll be Assassin’s Creed he shoots later this year instead.

Of course first he’s got X-Men: Days Of Future Past.

Derek Cianfrance Reckons These Guys Have All The Fun, About The Rise Of ESPN

September 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

derek-cianfranceUp until now Derek Cianfrance has stuck with relatively indie dramas such as Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond The Pines, but now he’s planning something a little different, as TheWrap reports that he wants to make, ESPN: These Guys Have All The Fun, for Focus Features.

You might now think a movie about the creation of a sports broadcaster would be that interesting, but the book the movie will be based on, by Andrew Miller and Tom Shales, has intrigued Hollywood since it was published back in 2011. Initially Fox bought the rights, but they couldn’t make it work so it’s now gone to Focus Features.

The book ‘chronicles the cable network’s rise to power using the voices of past and present ESPN personalities and producers, including Bill Simmons, Chris Berman and Keith Olbermann’.

They’ve also brought on Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti, who have some experience with this sort of thing, as they also produced The Social Network.

Blue Valentine’s Derek Cianfrance Circles The Light Between Oceans

September 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

derek-cianfranceDerek Cianfrance’s profile has certainly risen thanks to Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond The Pines. Now he’s planning his next movie, with Variety reporting that he’s set to direct The Light Between Oceans for DreamWorks.

The film will be based  on the debut novel from M.L. Stedman, which ‘takes place on a remote Australian island after World War I, where a lighthouse keeper and his wife face a moral dilemma when a dead man and a two-month-old infant wash up in a boat on shore.’

It may be for DreamWorks but it certainly sounds like Cianfrance is sticking to the indie drama feel. Harry Potter’s David Heyman will produce.

While Cianfrance has made his last two movies with Ryan Gosling, the actor has recently said he’s taking a break, so he may not appear in this one.

Bradley Cooper & Omar Sy Join Derek Cianfrance’s Chef

January 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bradley-cooper-hangoverDerek Cianfrance has just made two films back-to-back with Ryan Gosling – Blue Valentine and Place Beyond The Pines – and now he wants to do the same with Bradley Cooper, who also stars in Pines and has now signed on for Cianfrance’s Chef. According to Variety, Untouchable star Omar sy will also be in the movie.

The comedy is about a disgraced chef (Bradley Cooper) who loses his prestigious restaurant in Paris. He decides to bring his old crew back together in an attempt to create the world’s greatest restaurant in London. It’s not known exactly who Omar Sy will play, although this will be the French actor’s first English-language film.

Cooper himself told French radio station RTL, “We’ve been talking about this project. I want to do it. It’s a beautiful story. And I love cooking. … [But] I’m going to make another film in March and after that I think I’m going to take a break and stay in Paris for Roland Garros (the tennis tournament set in late May).”

It sounds therefore that there’s no firm idea on when the movie might actually go in front of the cameras. Derek Cianfrance is directing from a screenplay by Steven Knight (Eastern Promises).

New Posters: Danny Boyle’s Trance, Place Beyond The Pines & Burt Wonderstone

January 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

trance-poster1
Some great new posters have popped up online overnight, giving us fresh look at Danny Boyle’s upcoming Trance, as well as the Ryan Gosling starrer The Place Beyond The Pines and Steve Carell’s magical comedy Burt Wonderstone.

The Trance poster above is pretty cool. It’s a US promo released at the same time an April 5th American release date has been announced, although us Brits will be getting it a little earlier on March 27th. James McAvoy plays an auction house assistant who masterminds an art heist and teams up with a gang of thieves, but suffers a blow to the head and wakes up with amnesia. He is the only one who knows where the stolen painting is and after his continued failure to remember, the gang begins to suspect duplicity on his part and hire a female hypnotist (Rosario Dawson) to get into his brain.

Take a look at the Burt Wonderstone and Place Beyond The Pines posters below.

burt-wonderstone-poster5
While I know Vegas magicians look a little fake and glossy, it’s a bit odd to produce a poster where you can only half recognise the main stars – Steve Carell, Jim Carrey and Steve Buscemi. Here’s the synopsis: ‘Superstar magicians Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell) and Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) have ruled the Las Vegas strip for years, raking in millions with illusions as big as Burt’s growing ego. But lately the duo’s greatest deception is their public friendship, while secretly they’ve grown to loathe each other. Facing cutthroat competition from guerilla street magician Steve Gray (Jim Carrey), whose cult followingsurges with each outrageous stunt, even their show looks stale. But there’s still a chance Burt and Anton can save the act—both onstage and off—if Burt can get back in touch with what made him love magic in the first place.’

Place-Beyond-the-Pines-poster1
The Place Beyond The Pines reunites Ryan Gosling with Blue Valentine helmer Derek Cianfrance. In the film, Luke (Ryan Gosling) is a professional motorcycle rider who turns to bank robberies to support his newborn son. But when he crosses paths with a rookie police officer (Bradley Cooper), their violent confrontation spirals into a tense generational feud.
