New World’s End Teaser Poster Arrives

October 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Shooting began recently of the third part of Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright’s Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, The World’s End. Now Empire has debuted a rather classy new teaser poster for the film, showing off the pub sign, which is where the characters in the film are headed.

Here’s the synopsis: ’20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their home town and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub, The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.’

Alongside Pegg and Frost, Rosamund Pike, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan are set to star, with an August 14th, 2013 release date now set.

Edgar Wright Directing Collider, With JJ Abrams Producing

July 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Here’s a bit of a dream team – J.J. Abrams producing, Edgar Wright co-writing and directing, and Mark Protosevich (Thor, I Am Legend) writing a new sci-fi project currently called Collider for Paramount Pictures, according to Deadline.

As this is a JJ Abrams project, no story details were given, although it’s possible this sci-fi project could have something to do with a particle collider. We reported last month that J.J. Abrams picked up the Oren Uziel screenplay God Particle. That story centres on a physics experiment with a particle accelerator that inexplicably causes the Earth to disappear. It isn’t known if these projects are related or not, although as this one is supposedly based on an idea by Wright, probably not.

This trio of filmmakers already have quite a lot on their plate at the moment. Mark Protosevich wrote the screenplays for Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake, and the Mass Effect video game adaptation. Edgar Wright will direct The World’s End before moving on to Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man. J.J. Abrams is currently in post-production on Star Trek 2, set for release next May. So don’t expect Collider anytime soon.

Ant-Man Movie Is Confirmed & The Test Footage Gets Screened

July 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The long-gestating Ant-Man movie seemed to have been confirmed a few weeks ago when it was revealed director Edgar Wright had completed some test footage for the film. Now that teaser has screened at Comic-Con to a largely positive reaction, and Marvel has revealed the title treatment for the movie. There’s no news on when it might be released, although with Iron Man 2, Thor 2, Captain America 2 and Guardians Of The Galaxy already dated, Ant Man isn’t likely to arrive until the end of 2014 at the earliest (and Wright is making The World’s End first).

The footage isn’t online yet (and as it’s a rough proof of concept deal, it may not show up at all), but here’s a description for /Film: ‘The footage begins in a long, Matrix style hallway with two Matrix style agents. The camera moves down the hall, through a grate, and we see a tiny man standing behind the grate: Ant-Man. He jumps through and starts running at them. Of course, they don’t see him. He then pops up into real size, they start shooting, he gets small again, jumps, runs down the shaft of the gun, jumps up and punches the guy in the face, shaking the face in slow motion. With that guy done, Ant-Man gets big again, flips the other agent over….okay, honestly by this point I was kind of freaking out and it gets fuzzy. I do know that Ant-Man takes care of business, is about to jump through another grate when the elevator pings, and he gets on it.’

The tone is said to be different to other Marvel films, with the accent more on humour. That’s not surprising considering Wright co-wrote the script with Joe Cornish. It certainly sounds interesting and the character could certainly make for a fun, if slightly silly, film.

After years of teasing, the script is ready and Universal has given the greenlight to The World’s End, the movie that will reunite Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and director Edgar Wright. And to show it’s real (and as Comic-Con is on), a teaser poster has been revealed. The movie will start shooting in October.

Edgar Wright Completes Ant-Man Test Reel

June 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ant-Man is one of those films that seems to be constantly talked about but never seems to actually move forward. Edgar Wright has been attached to direct for years and he always suggests it’s just over the horizon – but this time it appears that might actually be true, as THR reports Wright has just completed a test-footage reel for the movie.

Based on the Marvel Comic, Ant-Man is about Hank Pym, a scientist who devises a way to shrink his size and control an army of ants with a special helmet he’s constructed. Last month, Wright said he hopes to shoot this superhero movie sometime next year, after he wraps on The World’s End with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. The filmmaker co-wrote the Ant-Man screenplay with Joe Cornish (Attack the Block).

These early reels are often used to gauge a response from the studio about a filmmaker’s style or the overall look of a particular project. Directors such as Zack Snyder (300), Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles), and Guillermo del Toro (At the Mountains of Madness) made similar reels to help their projects get the green light.

We’ll have to wait and see if Edgar Wright’s reel will lead to the new Ant-Man feature. It’s also led to speculation that if Marvel likes the footage, it could be shown at Comic Con.

Pegg & Wright’s World’s End Aims For September Shoot

May 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For a couple years now Edgar Write and Simon Pegg have been teasing fans with hints about a film called The World’s End. We knew they were writing it, but there’s been precious little firm news. However now that the script is complete, it’s been revealed things are moving forward, with a September shoot planned and a release tentatively set for spring 2013.

The film will conclude the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy (also known as the Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy), following Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz. Edgar Wright will once again direct Pegg and his longtime on-screen companion Nick Frost.

Here is the official synopsis, ’20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again.

Once Edgar Wright is finished with The World’s End, he will move directly into The Night Stalker, a big screen adaptation of the cult TV series, which is set to star Johnny Depp as Kolchak, a Chicago newspaper reporter who stumbles into stories based in the Supernatural.

Edgar Wright Directing Johnny Depp In Night Stalker

February 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Edgar Wright is still busy working on Ant Man and a couple weeks ago he released a pic suggesting he and Simon Pegg were finally reuniting for their planned new movie, but now Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World and Shaun Of The Dead director Edgar Wright has added another movie to his plate, signing on to direct The Night Stalker for Disney and producer/star Johnny Depp.

The project was initially set up by Depp last summer and is based on a 1972 TV movie of the same name, which starred Darren McGavin as Carl Kolchak, a journalist who begins tracking a serial killer, only to discover the murderer is actually a vampire. The TV movie spawned the series Kolchak: The Night Stalker, which debuted in 1974. Johnny Depp will play Carl Kolchak, tracking a vampire rather than being one, as he is in this summer’s Dark Shadows.

The Night Stalker doesn’t have a screenwriter in place as of yet, although that will likely change soon with Edgar Wright attached (he may even write it himself). (Source: Deadline)
