Bradley Cooper Sought To Voice Rocket Raccoon In Guardians Of The Galaxy

August 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bradley-cooper-bathtubEarlier today, rumours emerged via Latino Review that Marvel was talking to Bradley Cooper about voicing Rocket Raccoon in Guardians Of The Galaxy. That’s now been confirmed by TheWrap. An offer has apparently been made to the actor, although it’s not know how close he is to signing (Cooper would provide the voice, although someone else will do the motion capture for the CGI character).

Rocket Raccoon started out with his own comic mini-series in the mid-80s before becoming part of the Guardian Of The Galaxy. He’s a talking Raccoon who a fast-talking member of the group that has vowed to protect the universe from the bad guys. Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey have both previously been rumoured for the role, but Cooper is apparently who director James Gunn wants.

In a recent interview Gunn said, “Here’s the thing: there are a lot of people who have a lot of ideas of who is right for Rocket Raccoon. Rocket Raccoon has been slightly different over the years, in the comic books, and within my scripts he is a very, very specific guy, and I think people are going to have to wait for a few weeks before they see. We’ll have to wait for a few weeks to see. We’ll get our dream guy, because a lot of people want to do it, so we’ll get the person who’s perfect for the role.”

The film recently began shooting in the UK, with an August 1st, 2014 release date set.

New Guardians Of The Galaxy Art & Revamped Logo Revealed

July 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

guardians-of-the-galaxy-comic-con-logo-newOne of the surprises of the Marvel Comic-Con panel was the entire cast of Guardian Of The Galaxy coming on stage. It was particularly unexpected as the film has just started shooting in the UK, so Marvel had to get them on a flight to San Diego on Friday evening, put them on stage and then fly them back Saturday night.

Also revealed was a revamped logo and a new piece of concept art for the movie, which you can see above and below.

There was also a bit of footage shown off, including the first look at the CGI Rocket Racoon. Those attending suggest the footage had a more irreverent tone than other Marvel movies, with Chris Prat giving the camera the finger at one point. It was all rather unfinished though (unsurprising considering it’s been shooting for such as short time), but it got the thumbs up from the audience.

Guardians Of The Galaxy hits cinemas summer 2014.

Benicio Del Toro Joins Guardians of the Galaxy, But Who Will He Play?

June 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

benicio-del-toroWith production due to kick off pretty soon, director James Gunn is fast fitting together the cast of Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy. The latest to join is Benicio Del Toro, according to Deadline, who’s set to play an unidentified but pivotal character, who it seems will also be included in future Marvel movies.

The Oscar-winning actor joins a cast that includes Chris Pratt (Peter Quill), Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), and Michael Rooker (Yondu), along with Lee Pace, Ophelia Lovibond, Glenn Close and Karen Gillan. Lee Pace is believed to be playing the main villain known as The Collector, although that has not been confirmed at this time.

There’s been immediate speculation about who Del Toro will play, with most of it surrounding the two characters we know will be in the movie but who haven’t been cast yet – Rocket Raccoon and Thanos. Some are saying it will be Rocket Raccoon, thinking the way Del Toro speaks fits well for a talking raccoon from space.

However speculation seem to be leaning towards Thanos, a villainous character who popped up in the end credits of The Avengers, but who we knew would be recast for subsequent appearance. He’s going to be a key but relatively small role in Guardians, but is likely to become more central in Avengers 2 & 3.

karen-gillanA lot of people loved Karen Gillan as Amy Pond in Doctor Who, and now it looks like she’ll be introduced to an even bigger audience, as THR reports she’s joining the growing cast of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

She’s set to play the film’s lead female villain, although her exact identity was not revealed. Lee Pace is playing the primary villain, who also has not been officially identified, but is believed to be Taneleer Tivan, aka The Collector. Ophelia Lovibond is playing one of The Collector’s henchmen.

Chris Pratt is set to star as the Guardians Of The Galaxy’s leader Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord, with Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Zoe Saldana portraying Gamora, and Michael Rooker as Yondu. Glenn Close Joining The Space Patrol In Guardians of the Galaxy

May 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

glenn-closeNormally the only women allowed to be in superhero movies are young, pretty ones whose job is to get into danger so that the strapping hero can come and rescue them. It’s good to hear then that Glenn Close is finalising a deal to join the cast of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, according to Deadline.

Assuming she signs on, the actress will play a leading member of the Nova Corps intergalactic space patrol, although the character’s exact identity has not been revealed. She joins a cast that includes Chris Pratt (Peter Quill), Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Michael Rooker (Yondu), Lee Pace (The Collector) and Ophelia Lovibond as one of The Collector’s henchmen.

James Gunn is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Chris McCoy and Nicole Perlman. Shooting is due to kick off in the UK later this year, with an August 1st 2014 release date already set.

John C. Reilly Rumoured For Guardians Of The Galaxy

May 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

john-c-reillyWhile it’s only rumour at the moment, it seems that John C. Reilly may be going into space soon, by joining the superhero movie Guardians Of The Galaxy. Hitfix says Marvel has made as offer to Reilly to play Rhomann Dey, although the actor is yet to commit, partly because, ‘if he comes aboard, it’s a big commitment’.

Rhomann Dey is described as Guardians’ version of Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson from Iron Man 2, Thor and Avengers. In the movie he’ll also have a colleague, with the likes of Hugh Laurie, Alan Rickman and Ken Watanabe being looked at for the part. It appears these two characters will act as the bridge between Guardians and the rest of the Marvel Universe, as they’ll act as a liaison between the Guardians and SHIELD.

However while Hitfix describes Dey as human, he isn’t in the comics, so things might be getting shaken up – although it could be that he’s like Thor, looking human but actually of alien origin.

James Gunn is directing, with shooting due to kick off in the UK later this year, with an August 1, 2014 release date set.

New Marvel Pics From Thor: The Dark World, Guardians Of The Galaxy & Captain America 2

May 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

thor-the-dark-world-preview-pic1
EW
has dropped some new pics from Marvel’s upcoming movies, including a still of Chris Hemsworth looking heroic in Thor: The Dark World, plus concept art from Guardians Of The Galaxy and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Marvel head honcho Kevin Fiege also has a few comments, saying “There are things in [Iron Man 3], in the next Thor movie, and particularly in the next Cap movie that will drastically change the landscape between Avengers and Avengers 2.”

On Captain America 2, he says, “Just as he’s given permission to let go of the past and to focus on the modern world… a ghost comes up.” That refers of the Captain’s old friend, Bucky Barnes, who’s resurrected, turned evil and becomes the Winter Soldier of the title.

Fiege adds, “We weren’t going back to World War II. Cap cannot travel in time. So while Tony can go home to Malibu and Thor goes up to Asgard and Hulk can sort of ride the rails, Cap was stuck. So Cap does stay with S.H.I.E.L.D. because he has nowhere else to go. But he’s not necessarily comfortable there…

“With the greatest generation in World War II, there’s a tendency to reflect on that period and say. ‘Things were black and white back then, and now it’s hard to know who the bad guys are.’ We wanted to play on that a little with Cap being uncomfortable with the way S.H.I.E.L.D., and in particular Nick Fury, operates. Fury certainly rides a line, sort of rides the shadows. He has, I think, lied to every character in every movie, though always for seemingly for the good.”

On the grittier, slightly more fantasy based Thor: The Dark World, he says, “It’s less to chase either Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings — because you’re not going to catch up. But part of the fun of Thor over the other characters is he doesn’t have to stay on Earth. We visit a few of the other realms in this new movie.”

As for Guardians, he says, “We can take it to all those crazy places as long as all the characters respond in an emotionally truthful way. That’s why I believe people are going to respond to Chris Pratt and to an alien Zoë Saldana—because they did respond to that one time before [with Avatar]. And to a tree and a raccoon who, it is certainly our intention, will steal the whole movie.”

Fiege also has a few words about Ant-Man, saying that later this year they’ll be refining the script of the Edgar Wright movie to tie it into the Marvel cinematic universe.

Lee Pace On For Guardians of the Galaxy Villain

April 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Lee Pace

Lee Pace

During the fairly lengthy search for the lead role of Peter Quill (AKA Star Lord) in Guardians Of The Galaxy, one of the frontrunners was Pushing Daisies star Lee Pace. He may not have bagged that role, but he has landed one of the other, playing the movie’s villain.

Although the villain’s identity has not been disclosed, many feel there is a good chance that he may play Taneleer Tivan, also known as The Collector. Just yesterday it was revealed that Ophelia Lovibond is playing one of The Collector’s henchmen, so we do know that character is in the movie. In the Marvel comic books, The Collector seeks out life forms and universes to protect from the evil Thanos, whose presence was revealed at the end of Marvel’s The Avengers.

Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), and Michael Rooker (Yondu) are also confirmed to star in this Marvel Phase Two adventure. James Gunn is directing from his own original screenplay, with production scheduled to commence in June. Lee Pace will next be seen in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug as Thranduil.

Ophelia Lovibond Circles Guardians of the Galaxy

April 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ophelia-lovibondOphelia Lovibond (Mr. Popper’s Penguin, 4.3.2.1.) is the latest actor to enter talks to join the cast of the upcoming Marvel stand-alone adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy, according to THR.

Not much is known about her character apart from the fact that she will be playing a henchman to The Collector, who is one of the Elders of the Universe that the Guardians encounter in the sci-fi adventure. It’s not clear if this is a major supporting role, or whether it’ll just be a brief appearance.

Lovibond joins Chris Pratt as Star Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Michael Rooker as Yondu and Zoe Saldana, who is in talks for Gamora. Guardians of the Galaxy will start shooting in June in the UK with James Gunn directing, and will be in cinemas summer 2014.

Michael Rooker Joins Guardians Of The Galaxy As Yondu

April 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-rookerMichael Rooker has had a bit of career boost recently thanks to his role in The Walking Dead. Now he’s heading for film as he has signed on to star in Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy as Yondu, according to Deadline.

The character first appeared in a 1969 issue of the comic book Marvel Super-Heroes. He hails from the Zatoan tribe on Centauri IV, the first planet to be colonised outside of the Sun’s solar system in the 29th Century. Yondu does not possess any super-human abilities, but he is a skilled hunter with a bow and arrow, and has a mystical ‘sixth sense’ that gives him limited empathic abilities with other life forms.

He was one of the founding members of the Guardians of the Galaxy and in the comics Yondu has blue skin and sports a feathery Mohawk, but it’s not clear if that will follow through into the movie.

Michael Rooker joins Chris Pratt as Peter Quill, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer and Zoe Saldana as Gamora. James Gunn is directing from his own screenplay, based on the Marvel comic books. Shooting will kick off in the UK later this year, with an August 1st, 2014 release set.
