Benedict Cumberbatch Playing Star Trek 2 Villain

January 5, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

While it’s still sometimes difficult to accept there really is a person called Benedict Cumberbatch (it sounds too much like the villain from an Edwardian novel), he’s doing very well for himself thanks to TV’s Sherlock. He’s also bagged a role in the upcoming War Horse and The Hobbit and now his star is set to rise into the stratosphere as he’s been cast as the villain in Star Trek 2, according to Variety.

He’s not the only new Brit onboard, as Noel Clarke is also joining the movie. It isn’t known precisely what role either will play (as is always the way with JJ Abrams films), although it’s said Clarke will be a family man with a wife and young daughter, while Cumberbatch is the main villain.

We still don’t know who that villain will be, although rumours still swirl that it’ll be legendary bad guy Khan (which seems to be at least paritally based on the fact previous actors in the frame for the part, such as Benicio Del Toro and Edgar Ramirez, are hispanic).

Star Trek 2 Shooting On Film For Post-Production 3D

December 21, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

While JJ Abrams is out doing promotional duties as producer of Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol producer J.J. Abrams, all anyone really wants to ask him about is Star Trek 2. However Abrams is notoriously tight-lipped, so he’s not saying much, but he did let slip to MTV that the movie will be shot in 2D and converted to 3D later, with some scenes possibly shooting in IMAX.

“We’re shooting on film, 2D, and then we’ll do a good high-end conversion like the Harry Potter movie and all that,” Abrams says. “Luckily, with our release date now (May 17th, 2013) we have the months needed to do it right because if you rush it, it never looks good. We were talking about [shooting in IMAX] and I would love to do it. IMAX is my favorite format; I’m a huge fan.”

The director wouldn’t say whether, as rumoured, Kahn is going to be the villain, saying that it is too early to talk about the fine details just yet. He did call the script “amazing”, and claims that it will all be on him if this film gets screwed up.

Some are bound to grumble about post-production 3D, but it can be okay if done well. The film begins shooting next month.

Star Trek 2 Eyeing Edgar Ramirez As Its Villain

December 8, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

With a January production start planned for Star Trek 2, JJ Abrams doesn’t have long to find the film’s main villain after talks with Benicio Del Toro broke down last week. As a result he’s working fast and it seems he’s already found the person he wants, although as yet no deal is in place.

Variety reports that Édgar Ramírez (Carlos) is the front runner to win the bad guy role, with Jordi Mollà (Colombiana) also in contention. With both those actors from Latin America, it will undoubtedly increase the rumours that the baddie is Khan, although this is far from being confirmed. If you’re trying to place Ramirez’s face, while he hasn’t really made it big in Hollywood yet, the Venezuelan actor has been seen in the likes of Domino, Che and The Bourne Ultimatum.

Director J.J. Abrams is expected to make a decision before the weekend. Édgar Ramírez will apparently test for the role via Skype today, so expect to hear more soon. Star Trek 2 is due in cinemas May 17th, 2013.

Benicio Del Toro Out Of Star Trek 2

December 6, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

For the last couple of weeks it seemed that Benicio Del Toro would be playing the villain in Star Trek 2, and for much of that time, rumours have swirled that the character he’d play would be the legendary Trek bad guy, Khan. However over the weekend director JJ Abrams seemed to quash rumours of Khan’s involvement.

Things have somewhat changed now though, as Vulture reports that talks with Del Toro’s people broke down last week over financial issues, and that Abrams now has to look elsewhere for his villain.

This has led some to wonder whether Abrams ‘not true’ denial last weekend about Khan was a bit of smoke and mirrors and actually referred to the fact that Del Toro would not be playing Khan, not that no one would. Vulture says highly placed sources still say Khan’s the villain, and it would make sense. But with Abrams being as ridiculously secretive as always, we’ll have to wait for confirmation.

Peter Weller Joins Star Trek 2

December 5, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

While JJ Abrams is still trying to keep things secret on the plot front for Star Trek 2, new cast members are gradually being announced, even if we don’t know who’ll they’ll be playing. The latest addition is Robocop himself, Peter Weller, who Variety reports has joined the movie.

There’s absolutely no clue who he’ll play though. He joins Alice Eve and Benicio Del Toro (although his deal is still to be closed) in mystery new roles in the sci-fi sequel. Rumours have been sweeping around that Del Toro would be playing Khan. While Abrams has said very little about the movie, he has however stepped out to publicly deny that Khan is in the movie.

Shooting is due to start on the movie in January, for release summer 2013.

Alice Eve Added To Star Trek 2

December 1, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Things are finally moving on apace with Star Trek 2, and the latest news, via Variety, is that actress Alice Eve is in talks to join the cast for director J.J. Abrams and Paramount Pictures. The She’s Out Of My League actress doesn’t have a deal set yet, although it is expected to be finalised very soon. Teresa Palmer and Hayley Atwell also apparently tested for the role.

This being JJ Abrams, no details have been released regarding who Alice Eve may play, but it is said to be a brand new character in the Star Trek universe. Earlier this month Benicio Del Toro was offered the villain role in this sci-fi sequel, although again it’s not known what character he’ll play. It now seems the actor has accepted the offer, although a deal is still pending.

Filming is scheduled to start January 15.

Star Trek 2 Gets May 2013 Release

November 24, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

There’s been a huge amount of interest in exactly when Star Trek 2 might reach our screens, largely because while Paramount was keen to get it into production the moment the first film hit it big at the box office, JJ Abrams and the writers (Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof) have taken their sweet time putting things together.

At one point the studio felt confident enough to set a summer 2012 release date, but it soon became apparent that Abrams simply wasn’t going to be ready to get it in cinemas by then. However now Paramount has resheduled things, and with shooting expected to start in the next few months (many sources say January), a new release date has been set – May 17th, 2013. That’s only confirmed for America so far, but presumably it’ll be the same date over here.

Deadline reports that Paramount was quite to jump in when Sony movied Roland Emmerich’s Singularity off that date. It’s also said that Abrams will be making the movie in 3D, which could certainly be an interesting new look for the space tales.

Benicio Del Toro Wanted For Star Trek 2

November 7, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

It may have taken them quite a while to get Star Trek 2 sorted, but things finally seem to be moving forwards on the movie, with JJ Abrams once more at the helm. Now it appears Abrams has decided who he wants as the villain, as Variety reports he’s met Benicio Del Toro about the role.

A formal offer has not been made to the actor, but Abrams and Del Toro have had a meeting and it is believed Paramount will issue the offer very soon. Abrams, who’s well known for being secretive, is said to be being so cagey about the villainous part, he wouldn’t even tell Benicio what it was when they met.

Shooting is scheduled to start in early 2012, with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho, and Anton Yelchin all expected to return.

JJ Abrams Hires Boilerplate Writers

November 4, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Alternate histories seem to be big in Hollywood at the moment, whether it’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter or undead meets Austen of Price & Prejudice & Zombies. JJ Abrams snapped up the rights to another one just over a year ago, Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett steampunky graphic novel, Boilerplate.

Now things are finally moving forwards as Deadline reports that Abrams has hired writers JD Payne and Patrick McKay to come up with a script for the film version. The graphic novel centres on a fictional version of the world’s first humanoid-robot, which was built in the early 19th Century to replace men on the battlefield. The robot is shown fighting alongside Teddy Roosevelt and it even circled the planet with the US Navy, trekked to the South Pole, made silent movies, and hobnobbed with the likes of Mark Twain and Nikola Tesla. The book originally came about when Guinan started writing about the robot on a website and people began to believe it was real.

JD Payne and Patrick McKay are also currently writing Deadliest Warrior, a movie adaptation of the popular Spike TV series of the same name, and penned Goliath, based on the biblical tale.
