Shadow of the Colossus Adaptation Gets Director Josh Trank

May 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

From the moment Chronicle was released, director Josh Trank became one of the most in-demand men in Hollywood, with studios attracted by the way he managed to make a sci-fi hit for very little money. Now he has signed on to direct and develop the video game adaptation Shadow of the Colossus for Sony Pictures, according to Deadline.

The project first went into development back in April 2009, when Justin Marks (Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li) signed on to write the screenplay. Sony is currently interviewing screenwriters to collaborate with the director, so it seems that Marks is no longer involved.

The video game was released in 2005 and centres on Wander, a desperate man who enters a forbidden land, with the hope that a mystical demon can bring his lover back from the dead. The demon charges Wander with defeating 16 stone giants dubbed ‘colossi’, before he can be reunited with his true love.

Josh Trank has been attached to a number of projects since the release of Chronicle, including The Red Star, a Fantastic Four reboot, and a Venom spin-off. It isn’t known which of these projects will go before cameras first.

Chronicle’s Josh Trank Directing The Red Star

March 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Following the success of Chronicle, Josh Trank became a hugely in-demand young man. He’s already attached to Sony’s planned Venom movie, there was talk he may take on The Fantastic Four, and now Deadline reports that he’s got another comic book project in the work.

He’s signed up for The Red Star, based on Christian Gossett’s award-winning comic that imagines an alternate USSR where advanced technology lives side-by-side with magic. While the story sprawls over various subjects, the main thrust is a soldier fighting to kill a fascist ruler. It would certainly be an ambitious movie, and it’s be a relatively brave move to give it the greenlight, but Trank’s now going to work to make that happen.

It’ll also be interesting to see what Trank can do when he’s got a bit of money to play with.

Chronicle’s Josh Trank May Take On Venom

March 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Even before Venom popped up in Spider-man 3, there’s been talk of giving the character his own movie, but it’s only in the last year or so Sony’s really been pushing to make it a reality (they flirted with a Gary Ross directed version just after Spider-man 3, but that fell apart). Now the LA Times says Chronicle director Josh Trank is in negotiations to direct Venom.

While early talk about the Venom movie back in 2008 had Topher Grace returning to the role, he’s long gone from the Venom movie. However what isn’t known is whether Sony is seeing this is a completely separate entity, or if it will fit into the rebooted world it’s creating with The Amazing Spider-man.

Sony is currently looking for a new screenwriter to take over from the likes of Jacob Aaron Estes and the Zombieland team of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who worked on previous drafts of the screenplay.

Fantastic Four Reboot Eyes Chronicle Director Josh Trank

January 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sony is testing the waters for rebooting a superhero franchise only a couple of years after the previous incarnation ended with The Amazing Spider-man this summer. Assuming that goes well, 20th Century Fox is planning to follow suit with a new take on Fantastic Four.

According to Variety, plans are moving forward as the studio is currently eyeing Chronicle director Josh Trank to helm the movie. However, the studio is waiting to see how his directorial debut, Chronicle, does at the box office before officially offering him the job.

Chronicle is a found-footage faux-documentary about a group of three high school friends who acquire an extraordinary set of telepathic powers. The superhero thriller has gained a lot of buzz and 20th Century Fox things they may have a hit on their hands, but they want to check audience reaction before giving Trank the big budget franchise.

Fox is currently awaiting the latest draft of Fantastic Four from Michael Green, who previously worked on Green Lantern. The idea is to give things a complete overhaul, offering a tweaked spin on the mythology and an entirely new cast.

Alongside Fantastic Four, 20th Century Fox is also continuing to move forward on the stand-alone R rated X-Men spin-off Deadpool, as well as a revamped Daredevil. 20th Century Fox owns these Marvel properties in perpetuity as long as they keep making films based on them. It is likely that Fantastic Four will be the next Marvel adventure from the studio.
