Phantom Thread Trailer – Paul Thomas Anderson directs Daniel Day-Lewis in his final film

October 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few months ago many were surprised by the news that triple Oscar-winner Daniel Day-Lewis was retiring from acting. However, we haven’t quite seen the last of him yet, as he’s reteaming with his There Will Be Blood director, Paul Thomas Anderson, for Phantom Thread, which has just released its first trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set in the glamour of 1950’s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock’s life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love. With his latest film, Paul Thomas Anderson paints an illuminating portrait both of an artist on a creative journey, and the women who keep his world running. Phantom Thread is Paul Thomas Anderson’s eighth movie, and his second collaboration with Daniel Day-Lewis.’

The film is due out in the UK on February 2nd 2018. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Inherent Vice (Cinema Review)

January 29, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Owen Wilson, Josh Brolin, Katherine Waterston, Martin Short
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
Running Time: 149 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 30th 2015

If you demand coherent plots and comprehensible dialogue from your movies, look away now. There is not one scene of Anderson’s sprawling behemoth of a movie that makes any sense whatsoever. It’s a stoned, fug-smoked, labyrinth of a film noir that takes pleasure in its baffling structure and dares you to go along with it. Frankly after an hour it’s too much effort, and the pleasure switches in watching great actors revelling in show-off roles soaked in dreamy Californian sunshine. [Read more…]

New Inherent Vice Trailer – Fresh look at Joaquin Phoenix in Paul Thomas Anderson’s film

December 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

inherent-vice-joaquin-phoenixDirected by Oscar nominee Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Oscar nominees Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin and Owen Wilson; Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon and Benicio Del Toro; Katherine Waterston, Martin Short, Jena Malone and Joanna Newsom, Inherent Vice is released in the UK on January 30th 2015.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When private eye Doc Sportello’s (Joaquin Phoenix)ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a loony bin…well, easy for her to say.

‘It’s the tail end of the psychedelic `60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” that’s being way too overused—except this one usually leads to trouble.

‘With a cast of characters that includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, LAPD Detectives, a tenor sax player working undercover, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists… Part surf noir, part psychedelic romp—all Thomas Pynchon.

‘“Inherent Vice,” is the seventh feature from Paul Thomas Anderson and the first ever film adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon novel.’ [Read more…]

First Look At Joaquin Phoenix & Josh Brolin In Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice

August 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Inherent-Vice-pic1There have been big gaps between most Paul Thomas Anderson movies, but there’ll only be a couple of years between The Master and Inherent Vice, which should be in cinemas at the end of the year.

Now EW has debuted the first image, which features a massively mutton-chopped Joaquin Phoenix getting a bit intense with Josh Brolin.

The movie is based on Thomas Pynchon’s 2009 novel of the same name, which follows Los Angeles private detective Doc Sportello (Phoenix) in 1969. It’s described as being, ‘Part noir, part psychedelic romp, all Thomas Pynchon- private eye Doc Sportello surfaces, occasionally, out of a marijuana haze to watch the end of an era. In this lively yarn, Thomas Pynchon, working in an unaccustomed genre that is at once exciting and accessible, provides a classic illustration of the principle that if you can remember the sixties, you weren’t there.

Katherine Waterson, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Jena Malone and Martin Short also star.

Paul Thomas Anderson is putting the cast together for Inherent Vice at lighting speed, as the gap between the project getting the go-ahead and a planned shoot in a few weeks time has been pretty short. Now he’s found one of his female leads, with Deadline reporting that Katherine Waterson has signed up for the film.

Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Jena Malone and Martin Short also star, with shooting kicking off soon.

Benicio Del Toro Finds Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice

May 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

benicio-del-toroThere was five years between There Will Be Blood and The Master, but Paul Thomas Anderson is keen to ensure we don’t have to wait as long for his next movie. Indeed, there are already plans to start shooting Inherent Vice in the next couple of months. Now a couple of new cast member have signed up – Benicio Del Toro and Kevin J. O’Connor.

This noir film, set in 1969 Los Angeles, is based on Thomas Pynchon’s 2009 novel about a weed-smoking private detective, Doc Sportello, who’s on a kidnapping case involving a missing girlfriend. Joaquin Phoenix is set to star in the lead role (taking over from Robert Downey Jr. who was attached when the movie was first mooted). Del Toro will play the small but crucial role of Sportello’s lawyer friend.

It isn’t known who Kevin J. O’Connor will play, although as he’s worked by Anderson on both There Will Be Blood and The Master, hopefully the writer/director has saved a juicy role for him. (Source: The Wrap)
