Big Eyes Trailer – Tim Burton takes on a 60s art tale with Amy Adams & Christoph Waltz

September 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

big-eyes-pic1Tim Burton is most often thought of as a director of the fantastical, but he’s heading back to true tales of the relatively recent past with Big Eyes, and now we get our first look we a trailer.

The film follows Margaret Keane (Amy Adams), whose paintings of large-eyed children were massively popular in the 1950s and 1960s. However initially her husband Walter (Christoph Waltz) claimed to the world that he was behind the paintings.

After the two fell out, she revealred that she was the true artist behind all the big-eyed paintings, and that the rather pompous and self-obsessed Walter (who spoke about himself in the third person and compared himself to Rembrandt and El Greco) stole all the credit for her work.

This set off a long running dispute between the two which ended in court battles, and a rather dramatic moment in court where the judge asked both to do some painting. Walter refused to do so because of a pain in his arm, but Margaret quickly crafted one of her trademark paintings.

Terence Stamp, Danny Huston, Krysten Ritter and Jason Schwartzman also star. The movie is heading for a Christmas US release. [Read more…]

First Pics Of Amy Adams & Christoph Waltz In Tim Burton’s Big Eyes

August 4, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

big-eyes-pic1Tim Burton is taking a step away from the fantastical and returning to the world of the biopic he’s handled so well in the likes of Ed Wood. The film is Big Eyes, and now USA Today has debuted the first pics from the film.

The images feature Amy Adams as artist Margaret Keane, with Christoph Waltz as her husband, Walter (who are certainly a different pairing from Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Reynolds, who were eyed for the film before Burton decided to direct).

Tim Burton In Talks for Beetlejuice 2, With Michael Keaton Likely To Return Too

October 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tim-burtonOver the weekend rumours emerged that Tim Burton was seriously considering directing Beetlejuice 2. Now that’s been confirmed, with TheWrap reporting that Burton is indeed in talks to helm the long-gestating movie.

Michael Keaton is also expected to reprise his role as the title character, although it’s no clear if his deal is set yet or not. It may be that Burton is happy to agree to make Beetlejuice 2, as long as he also gets to helm an adaptation of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg wrote the screenplay the Beetlejuice follow-up, although no story details have been revealed yet. It’s not clear when it might shoot, although it appear Burton will make another movie first, so don’t expect it anytime soon.

Terence Stamp Up For Tim Burton’s Big Eyes

July 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

terrence-stampTim Burton is leaving the fantastical behind for his next movie, and doing something slightly different but potentially just as interesting. He’s already added Christoph Waltz, Amy Adams, Danny Huston, Krysten Ritter and Jason Schwartzman to the cast of Big Eyes, and now Terence Stamp has signed up too, according to THR.

Adams is set to play artist Margaret Keane, whose paintings of large-eyed children were massively popular in the 1950s and 1960s. Christoph Waltz is playing her husband Walter, who initially claimed he was behind the paintings. However, Margaret later claimed she was the true artist behind all the big-eyed paintings, and that the rather pompous and self-obsessed Walter (who spoke about himself in the third person and compared himself to Rembrandt and El Greco) stole all the credit for her work.

It set off a long running dispute between the two which ended in court battles, and a rather dramatic moment in court where the judge asked both to do some painting. Walter refused to do so because of a pain in his arm, but Margaret quickly crafted one of her trademark paintings.

Terence Stamp will portray New York Times art critic John Canaday, who despises Walter and his rise to prominence. Tim Burton is directing from a screenplay by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who previously wrote Ed Wood for the director, along with notable biopics such as The People vs. Larry Flynt and Man on the Moon.

Danny Huston May Take On Tim Burton’s Big Eyes

May 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

danny-hustonA few months ago, Tim Burton decided to leave the fantastical behind and take on the biopic Big Eyes, and now he’s filling out the cast, with THR reporting that Danny Huston is in talks to star in the film.

The movie is based on the fascinating true story of artists Margaret Keane and Walter Keane (Amy Adams & Christoph Waltz), whose bizarre paintings featuring large eyed characters were beloved across the world in the 1960s.

Huston will play a burnt-out, heavy-drinking gossip reporter.

Filming is due to kick off this summer, with Burton working from a script by Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander.

Amy Adams, Christoph Waltz & Director Tim Burton Team For Big Eyes

April 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tim-burtonTim Burton is taking a step back from big, fantastical movies to make something a little smaller but still potentially very interesting. He is attached to direct Big Eyes, with Christoph Waltz and Amy Adams set to star, according to Deadline.

Screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski were previously attached to direct from their own script before Tim Burton stepped in. Indeed it’s all change, as last January Ryan Reynolds and Reese Witherspoon were set to star, but they are no longer a part of the project.

Frankenweenie (DVD)

February 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Charlie Tahan, Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau, Winona Ryder
Director: Tim Burton
Running Time: 87 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: February 25th 2013

With Frankenweenie and Paranorman, we may be seeing a resurgence in family films that are meant to be a bit scary, rather than the anaemically nice kid’s movies we’ve had for the last few years. While Tim Burton’s animated movie is never too intense for youngsters, it’s gently creepy and touches on some tough themes, such as learning to come to terms with death.

Victor Frankenstein is a young lad who’s devastated when his beloved pet dog, Sparky, is run over by a car and killed. Unable to accept his pooch’s untimely demise, Victor comes up with an incredible plan to use electricity to bring the animal back to life. Miraculously it works, although Victor realises he must keep the revived Sparky a secret. [Read more…]

Disney Plans Alice in Wonderland Sequel

December 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When a film becomes a major hit, the usual thing in Hollywood is to get a sequel moving as fast as possible. However despite Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland making a billion at the box office, we haven’t heard anything about a follow-up – until now, that is.

Variety reports that Walt Disney Pictures is now moving ahead on a sequel to Alice in Wonderland, with original screenwriter Linda Woolverton returning to write the follow-up. There’s no news on whether Tim Burton intends to direct.

It’s likely it’s taken a while to get this going as no deals are in place guaranteeing the likes of Johnny Depp (Mad Hatter), Mia Wasikowska (Alice), Helena Bonham Carter (Red Queen), and Anne Hathaway (White Queen) will returns – and so getting them back may be difficult and incredibly costly. However it’s possible Woolverton has come up with a pitch that gets around this.

Jane Goldman Writing Pinocchio For Robert Downey Jr. & Tim Burton

November 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jane Goldman used to be best known as Jonathan Ross’ wife, but thanks to Stardust, Kick-Ass, The Debt, X-Men: First Class and The Woman In Black she’s now one of the hottest screenwriters in Hollywood. THR reports that she’s now in talks to write the screenplay for Pinocchio, which has Robert Downey Jr. attached to star and Tim Burton set to direct.

The first news on the project arrived back in January, when Downey Jr. and Burton signed on. At that time Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies) was on scripting duties, but they now want Goldman to take over. This version of the classic tale will feature Robert Downey Jr. as Geppetto, who creates the wooden puppet Pinocchio. When his creation goes missing, Geppetto goes on a journey to find the marionette.

It isn’t known when production may begin.

Frankenweenie Set To Open The London Film Festival

August 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The opening film of the 56th BFI London Film Festival has been announced, and it’ll be Tim Burton’s stop-motion movie Frankenweenie getting the honour, with the film receiving its European Premiere at the LFF Opening Night Gala on Wednesday October 10th.

In partnership with American Express and Disney, and in a first for the Festival, the Opening Night screening and red carpet will go live from Odeon Leicester Square to BFI Imax and 30 screens across the UK. The Festival will also host The Art of Frankenweenie Exhibition from 17-21 October.

Frankenweenie is a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life – with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous. The film’s voice cast includes Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, Atticus Shaffer, Robert Capron, Conchata Ferrell and Winona Ryder. Disney will release the film in the UK on 17 October.

Tim Burton, Winona Ryder, Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, Martin Landau, Producer Allison Abbate and Executive Producer Don Hahn are expected to attend the Festival. Producer Allison Abbate comments: “I am delighted that Frankenweenies, which was produced here in London at 3 Mills Studios, will be opening the 56th BFI London Film Festival. Living and working in the UK, I’ve been able to collaborate with some of the most talented artists in the industry including the puppet designers and fabricators from Manchester-based Mackinnon & Saunders. In the last nine years, I’ve attended the Festival as both a filmmaker and guest, and I know how passionate and enthusiastic the audiences are, so I am thrilled to share the film’s European Premiere with them.”

The 56th BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express runs from Wednesday 10th October-Sunday 21st October. The full programme for the Festival will be announced at the press launch on Wednesday 5th September.
