Joker Origin Film Being Planned By Martin Scorsese & Hangover Director Todd Phillips

August 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With DC’s film universe not being the unmitigated critical and commercial success Warner Bros. obviously hoped it would be (the only exception being the all-conquering Wonder Woman), it appears the studio is now looking to how it can explore and use some its iconic characters away from the interconnected universe – even if they’re already involved in that wider series. Indeed, it sounds as is rather than aping the Marvel movies, Warner/DC is now hoping to be more like what Disney/Lucasfilm is doing with Star Wars.

Warner/DC is setting up a new production banner for these ‘unique’ movies, with one of the first ones planned an origin film for The Joker. Hangover and War Dogs helmer Todd Phillips has signed up to write and direct the movie, and interestingly Variety adds that Martin Scorsese in talks to have some sort of behind-the-scenes role, although it’s not currently certain what that might be.

The film will apparently, ‘take place in the ’80s and have more of the look of a gritty crime drama than comic book movie, which had a lot to do with getting Scorsese’s commitment to the project.’ It also won’t feature Jared Leto in the central role, despite the actor playing the Joker in Suicide Squad, and being involved in both the sequel and a possible movie focussing on the relationship between Joker and Harley Quinn.

It’s not currently known when we might see the film, but it’s certainly an interesting direction for Warner/DC to take.

War Dogs (Blu-ray Review)

December 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Miles Teller, Jonah Hill, Ana De Armas, Bradley Cooper, Kevin Pollak
Director: Todd Phillips
Running Time: 116 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 26th 2016 (UK)

Life isn’t going as well as young David Packouz (Miles Teller) hoped. He’s stuck offering massages to middle-aged businessmen and wishing for something better. Then his old, rather wild, friend Efraim (Jonah Hill) returns to Miami from LA and offers David an opportunity.

Efraim is using a new government initiative to hopefully get rich. After a few scandals, President George W. Bush has opened up all government contracts to bids from private companies of any size, and that includes defence contracts. Efraim wants David to help him get the smaller arms contracts that the big companies are ignoring. That usually involved helping outfit the Iraqi or Afghani armies rather than the US military itself. War Dogs Trailer – Jonah Hill & Miles Teller make a deal to arm the Afghan government

July 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

war-dogs-slideJonah Hill & Miles Teller aren’t the first people you’d think of as military contractors, and neither are the characters they play in War Dogs. The first trailer for the based-on-a-true-story movie has now arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on a true story, “War Dogs” follows two friends in their early 20s (Hill and Teller) living in Miami during the first Iraq War who exploit a little-known government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on U.S. Military contracts. Starting small, they begin raking in big money and are living the high life. But the pair gets in over their heads when they land a 300 million dollar deal to arm the Afghan Military—a deal that puts them in business with some very shady people, not the least of which turns out to be the U.S. Government.’

Take a look at the trailer below. It’ll be in cinemas on August 26th. [Read more…]

Bradley Cooper Will Take On Mack Bolan With Hangover Helmer Todd Phillips

August 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bradley-cooperWhile there might be no plans for any more Hangover movies, it appears Bradley Cooper is hoping to reteam with that trilogy’s helmer, Todd Phillips, for an adaptation of Don Pendleton’s Mack Bolan novel series, according to Deadline.

Bolan is an expert sniper with over 90 kills to his record, which earned him the nickname ‘The Executioner’. He appeared in 37 novel, starting with 1969’s War Against the Mafia, which followed Bolan’s battle with the mob after he returns from war to discover they have destroyed his family. The character has been described as a bit of a military-based, American James Bond, who can get out of any situation no matter how dangerous.

It’s not clear whether the film will be based on War Against The Mafia or another one of the books, although it’s likely the setting for the movie will be moved to the present day rather than the Vietnam era. Avatar 4 co-writer Shane Salerno is on scripting duty.

Bradley Cooper Signs Up For Arms and the Dudes, Reuniting With Todd Phillips

May 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bradley-cooperThey’ve made three Hangover movies together but that’s not enough for Bradley Cooper and Todd Phillips, as they’re getting back together for the comedy Arms and the Dudes, according to THR.

Indeed they like each other so much that this is the first project from a new Warner Bros-based production company they’ve recently set up together.

Phillips has been attached to the project since July 2011, but now Cooper has come on board to produce and may also star (although that’s not certain at the moment). The film is based on Guy Lawson’s Rolling Stone article, which chronicles the true story of 20-something stoners David Packouz and Efraim Diveroli, who managed to win a $300 million contract from the Pentagon to arm America’s allies in Afghanistan.

The two made 85 deliveries of munitions to Afghanistan worth more than $66 million before their arms-dealing careers were cut short when federal agents raided their Miami Beach offices in Aug. 2007, culminating in 71 counts of fraud, due to the poor quality arms they delivered.

In 2009 the duo plead guilty to one count of conspiracy and in January Diveroli was sentenced to four years in prison. You can read the article here.

Jonah Hill has apparently been involved in table reads for the project, but it isn’t known if he will star. Todd Phillips is currently finishing off the screenplay, with the hope of shooting the movie later this year.

The Hangover Part III Red-Band Trailer – The boys are back and as rude as ever

May 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Next week The Hangover trilogy comes to an end with The Hangover Part III, which sees the Wolf Pack back in Las Vegas. To ensure fans are excited, a new red band trailer has been released.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘It’s been two years. Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms) and Doug (Justin Bartha) are happily living uneventful lives at home. Tattoos have been lasered off, files purged. The last they heard from disaster-magnet Leslie Chow (Ken Jeong), he’d been tossed into a Thai prison and, with him out of the way, the guys have very nearly recovered from their nights prowling the seamy side of Las Vegas in a roofie’d haze, and being kidnapped, shot at, and chased by drug- dealing mobsters in Bangkok.

‘The only member of the Wolfpack who’s not content is Alan (Zach Galifianakis). Still lacking a sense of purpose, the group’s black sheep has ditched his meds and given in to his natural impulses in a big way-which, for Alan, means no boundaries, no filters and no judgment-until a personal crisis forces him to finally seek the help he needs.

‘And who better than his three best friends to make sure he takes the first step. This time, there’s no bachelor party. No wedding. What could possibly go wrong? But when the Wolfpack hits the road, all bets are off. One way or another…it all ends here.’

It opens May 23rd.

New Posters For Star Trek Into Darkness, Hangover Part III & Pacific Rim

May 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few new posters have popped up online, giving us a look at Star Trek Into Darkness, The Hangover Part III and a kaiju vs. jaeger banner from Pacific Rim. They’re all pretty good, so click on the pics below for larger versions.

The Star Trek Into Darkness pic promotes the film’s IMAX release, and seems to show the Enterprise under attack from itself! The JJ Abrams film is out in the UK on May 9th and May 17th in the US.

The Hangover Part III is out May 24th, and sees the Wolfpack back in Vegas. John Goodman is the bad guy, who wants money from Ken Jeong’s Mr. Chow, with the guys getting caught up in the chase.

Pacific Rim meanwhile is Guillermo Del Toro’s movie which sees humanity fighting back against monsters rising from the ocean, by building gigantic, human-controlled robots. It’ll hit cinemas on July 12th.

The Hangover Part III Trailer – The Wolf Pack are back in Vegas

April 12, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Hangover Part III hits cinemas on May 23rd (in the UK too, as the date has been moved up a couple of weeks), and to get us interested a new trailer has been released. This one has a bit more plot, with the guys staging an intervention to get Alan (Zach Galifianakis) some help, but things go pear shaped when a heavy (John Goodman) forces the Wolf Pack to find Mr Chow (Ken Jeong), he says has stolen over $20 million from him.

That results in the boys back in Vegas for one final blowout and plenty more madness.

It certainly looks fun and that perhaps this will be the franchise will be going out with a bang.

New Posters For Bradley Cooper In The Hangover III & Helena Bonham Carter In Lone Ranger

April 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hangover-part-iii-poster5
A couple of new posters have emerged, one featuring Bradley Cooper in The Hangover Part III and other giving Helena Bonham Carter her own The Lone Ranger character poster.

The Hangover Part III sees Cooper standing outside a XXX video store, although we don’t know whether sex shops feature prominently in the movie or not. The film sees the Wolf Pack return to Las Vegas for one final blowout, which turns out to be just as manic as their earlier adventures. The sequel is released May 24th.

The Lone Ranger meanwhile is Disney’s mega-budget take on the classic character, with Armie Hammer in the title role and Johnny Depp as Tonto. As the poster lets us know, Helena Bonham Carter plays Red, or to giver her her full name, Red Harrington, who’s a pistol-packing brothel owner. The film’s out in July.

A couple of characters poster for The Hangover Part III have emerged, both of which assure us ‘It Ends’. One of them features Ken Jeong’s regular character, Mr. Chow, while the other has a new character played by John Goodman, who it looks will be spending his time making like difficult for Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifianakis.

The movie hits cinemas on May 24th, with the Wolf Pack returning to Las Vegas for one last time.

This time there’s no bachelor party or wedding, but it’s safe to say that mayhem ensues.
