The Lone Ranger (DVD)

December 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Helena Bonham Carter
Director: Gore Verbinski
Running Time: 149 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: December 2nd 2013

Shortly after the release of The Lone Ranger, there was much talk about what a gargantuan flop it was, with the potential of losing $200 million for Disney. However while its $89 million US gross was rubbish compared to the $215 million it cost to make, it actually grossed $260 million worldwide, which isn’t as bad, but once all costs are taken into account, it’s still in the red. The Lone Ranger (Cinema)

Starring: Armie Hammer, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Wilkinson
Director: Gore Verbinski
Running Time: 149 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: August 9th 2013

When I saw that adaptation of The Lone Ranger was being made starring Jonny Depp, Armie Hammer and directed by Gore Verbinski, I couldn’t help but wonder whether a humorous western could really work with a young film audience who’ve being spoiled by huge Sci-Fi effects ridden blockbusters? Would the modern filmgoer still flock en masse to this type of film? Unfortunately, as US audiences have already proven, they won’t. But perhaps they should. [Read more…]

Despicable Me 2 Beats Grown Up 2 & Pacific Rim At The US Box Office

July 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Despicable-Me-2-posterDespite two new big releases this week, Despicable Me managed to hold onto the top spot at the US box office for a second week, taking another $44 million for an excellent total of $229 million so far.

However what analysts were really watching was whether Pacific Rim could beat Grown Ups 2. In the end it couldn’t, as Grown Ups 2 took $42.5 million, despite being reviled by the critics. That’s slightly ahead of the first Grown Ups film, and the second biggest start even for Adam Sandler (after The Longest Yard), which is good news for him after a series of disappointments.

Pacific Rim placed third with $38.3 million, which may be the highest opening ever for director Guillermo Del Toro, but certainly isn’t great for a movie that cost $200 million to produce. Thankfully though, it’s slightly more than some had expected after soft tracking for the robots vs. monsters movie. While it may eventually reach $100 million in the US, its only real hope of turning a profit is with a stellar international performance.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of July 12th-14th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Despicable Me 2 $44.7 $229.2
2 Grown Ups 2 $42.5 $42.5
3 Pacific Rim $38.3 $38.3
4 The Heat $14.0 $112.3
5 The Lone Ranger $11.1 $71.1
6 Monsters University $10.6 $237.7
7 World War Z $9.4 $177.0
8 White House Down $6.1 $62.9
9 Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain $5.0 $26.3
10 Man Of Steel $4.8 $280.9

Despicable Me 2 Massively Beats The Lone Ranger At The US Box Office

July 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Despicable-Me-2-posterWith Independence Day on a Thursday, Hollywood was hoping for a busy four-day holiday weekend, and they got one, even if it was a far better time for Universal than Disney.

Despicable Me 2 grossed a massive $142 million since it opened last Wednesday, marking one of the best starts ever for an animated movie. It’s particularly impressive for a non Pixar or DreamWorks Animation (or indeed Ice Age) movie, and far more than the $56 million the first film took in its first three days in 2010.

However while Universal will be all smiles today, there are likely to be a lot more frowns over at Disney. After spending $250 million on The Lone Ranger, the film grossed just $48.9 million in its first five days. That may not sound too horrific, but on the actual weekend it took just $29.4 million. Analysts are already suggesting it may struggle to hit $100 million in the US, and would therefore need a gargantuan overseas haul to make back its money. Some feel Disney could lose as much as $150 million on the film, once marketing and other costs are taken into account.

The only other new entry in the top 10 was the stand-up comedy film Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain. It’s yet another case of Hollywood not understanding the African-American audience and then being surprised by a film aimed at them becoming a success. The film took $17.4 million over the holiday, which already makes it the fifth highest grossing stand-up film ever in the US.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of July 5th-7th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Despicable Me 2 $82.5 $142.0
2 The Lone Ranger $29.4 $48.9
3 The Heat $25.0 $86.3
4 Monsters University $19.5 $216.3
5 World War Z $18.2 $158.7
6 White House Down $13.5 $50.4
7 Man Of Steel $11.4 $271.2
8 Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain $10.1 $17.4
9 This Is The End $5.8 $85.5
10 Now You See Me $2.7 $110.4

New The Lone Ranger Trailer – Armie Hammer & Johnny Depp saddle up

May 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hollywood hasn’t had much luck with blockbusters westerns (The Wild Wild West pretty much killed off studio interest for the last decade), but Disney will be hoping for more from its $200+ million The Lone Ranger. And from the evidence of a new trailer that’s popped up over at Apple, the film is looking pretty good.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, the filmmaking team behind the blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, comes Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ “The Lone Ranger,” a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero  is brought to life through new eyes.  Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.’

It’s out July 3rd in the US and August 9th in the UK.

New The Lone Ranger Trailer – The western goes mega-budget with Johnny Depp

April 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The received wisdom is that in the modern age, westerns don’t make huge amounts of money at the box office, but Disney is making a $200+ million bet on The Lone Ranger. It’s perhaps not as mad as it sounds, as people said the same thing about pirate movies until Johnny Depp, director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer came up with Pirates Of The Caribbean – and they’re the same people behind Lone Ranger.

Now an explosive new trailer has been released, which certainly make the film look like it could be a lot of fun, even if the tone is slightly uneven.

New Posters For Bradley Cooper In The Hangover III & Helena Bonham Carter In Lone Ranger

April 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hangover-part-iii-poster5
A couple of new posters have emerged, one featuring Bradley Cooper in The Hangover Part III and other giving Helena Bonham Carter her own The Lone Ranger character poster.

The Hangover Part III sees Cooper standing outside a XXX video store, although we don’t know whether sex shops feature prominently in the movie or not. The film sees the Wolf Pack return to Las Vegas for one final blowout, which turns out to be just as manic as their earlier adventures. The sequel is released May 24th.

The Lone Ranger meanwhile is Disney’s mega-budget take on the classic character, with Armie Hammer in the title role and Johnny Depp as Tonto. As the poster lets us know, Helena Bonham Carter plays Red, or to giver her her full name, Red Harrington, who’s a pistol-packing brothel owner. The film’s out in July.

New Posters For Elysium, The Lone Ranger & Hangover Part III Released

April 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

elysium-poster1More new posters have emerged for some of this year’s most anticipated movies – Elysium, The Longer Ranger and The Hangover Part III. The Elysium poster above comes just a few hours before we’ve been promised the first trailer for the movie, which sees Matt Damon as a man living on a ruined Earth, who becomes a threat to the elite, who live way above the surface in a place called Elysium. The film hits cinemas this summer.

The Hangover Part III meanwhile sees the Wolf Pack returning to Las Vegas. This time there’s no bachelor party of wedding, but mayhem inevitably ensues as the boys go for one final blowout. It’s out May 24th.

The Lone Ranger has released two character posters featuring Armie Hammer as the title character and Johnny Depp as Tonto. The mega-budget take on the classic character is out in July.

New Lone Ranger Photo Gets Fiery

April 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lone-ranger-preview-pic8
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has released a new photo from The Lone ranger on his Twitter page, showing Armie Hammer and William Fichtner walking away from two massive fires. It’s a classic shot as the heroes walk away as everything burns behind them, but unfortunately there’s no info on exactly how this fits into the film.

The movie hits cinemas in July.

The Lone Ranger International Trailer – Exploding even bigger in Japanese

March 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The voiceover and text in this new international trailer might be in Japanese, but you don’t really need to translate special effects and explosions, so it’s definitely worth taking a look.

There’s plenty of new footage to give us a taste of the big budget take on the classic western.

The film hits cinema on August 9th 2013.
