Think Like A Man Tops The US Box Office

April 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hollywood has never quite gotten to grips with the African American audience, so that every time a film with a largely black cast does well, it’s treated as a massive surprise. That’s certainly the case with Think Like A Man, which was barely on most people’s radar but scored a huge $33 million opening to top the box office chart.

The film knocked the movie many had expected to top the chart, The Lucky One, into second spot with $22 million. It’s certainly not a bad start for a romantic drama and marks a rare weekend when two female-focussed movies have opened strong against one another.

Disneynature’s Chimpanzee opened in fourth spot with $10.3 million, which is the biggest opening ever for a nature documentary. Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of April 20th-22nd.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Think Like A Man $33.0 $33.0
2 The Lucky One $22.8 $22.8
3 The Hunger Games $14.5 $356.9

Hunger Games Tops US Box Office For The Fourth Week

April 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although it held the top spot more due to a lack of new breakout hits than anything else, The Hunger Games is now the first film since Avatar to stay at number 1 on the US box office chart for four weeks running. It added another $21.5 million to take its total to an impressive $337 million.

That meant the weekend’s main new releases had to settle for second and third spot, with The Three Stooges doing the best, taking $17.1 million. It’s reported that the audiences largely consisted of under-25s, the group who know least about the real Stooges, but who do like the Farrelly Brothers’ brand of comedy.

Cabin In The Woods took third spot with an okay but not particularly great $14.8 million. Despite great reviews, it appears the general audience didn’t take to it, with reports that many disliked it due to the fact it wasn’t the generic splatter horror movie they thought they were getting (and films do tend to get pilloried in the word of mouth stakes if they aren’t exactly what they appear to be from the marketing).

The only other new entry in the top 10 was Lockout, which took a rather disappointing $6.2 million to finish in 9th place. It’s off from most other recent Luc Besson produced action, and suggests audiences didn’t take to its ‘Escape From New York but in space’ premise.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of April 13th-15th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Hunger Games $21.5 £337
2 The Three Stooges $17.1 $17.1

5 American Reunion $10.7 $39.9
6 Mirror Mirror $7.0 $49.4
7 Wrath Of The Titans $6.9 $71.2

Hunger Games Stays Atop The US Box Office

April 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Hunger Games has cemented its position as a true movie powerhouse, managing the increasingly rare feat of staying top of the US box office for three weeks, passing through the $300 million mark as it did so. That puts it ahead of all the Twilight movies’ final tallies, suggesting Lionsgate has something truly exceptional on its hands.

However the real battle of the weekend was between Titanic and American Reunion, with many questioning which would end up in the second spot at the US bo office. In the end it was American Reunion with $21.5 million that won out, which was a long way off the last two theatrical Pie movies, but that’s perhaps not unexpected for a franchise that’s been out of cinemas for a decade.

Titanic came third with $17.3 million over the weekend and $25 million since it opened last Wednesday. It’s not an amazing box office take, but with the Titanic anniversary still to come and overseas reporting healthy business, it’s still likely to be viewed as a success by the end of its run.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of April 6th-8th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Hunger Games $33.5 $302.8
2 American Reunion $21.5 $21.5
3 Titanic 3D $17.3 $25.7

5 Mirror Mirror $11.0 $36.4
6 21 Jump Street $10.2 $109.5
7 Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax $5.0 $198.2

Hunger Games Tops The US Box Office Again

April 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While it dropped nearly 60% from its record-breaking opening, The Hunger Games easily topped the US box office for a second weekend with $61.1 million, marking the seventh highest second-weekend ever.

It handily beat Wrath Of The Titans, which came in second with $34.2 million. That probably won’t bring massive amounts of cheer to Warner Bros. as it’s only half what the film of the Greek fantasy films took on its opening, although that film came out at the heights of excitement over 3D films.

Tarsem’s family fantasy take on Snow White, Mirror Mirror, came in third with $19 million. That’s considering a slight underperformance, as while it seems to have attracted young girls, teens and older women are still more interested in The Hunger Games. The hope is that with Easter coming this week, it will be able to continue making cash over the next couple of weeks.

Also making its first appearance in the top 10 was Salmon Fishing Of The Yemen, which added 350 screens and went from 16 to number 7 on the chart, with $1.2 million.

Take a look below for the US top 10 for March 30th to April 1st.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Hunger Games $61.1 $251.0
2 Wrath Of The Titans $32.2 $32.2

The Hunger Games Breaks Box Office Records

March 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There was no doubt The Hunger Games was going to be big, the only question was how big. Many were surprised last week when tracking said the film could open as high as $130 million in the US, but in the end even that turned out to be too conservative, as it ended up taking $155 million in its first three days in North America.

That’s the third biggest three-day opening ever, behind the final Harry Potter movie and The Dark Knight. The film also had the fifth biggest opening day ever, taking $68 million on Friday, and perhaps most surprisingly, by Saturday it had already become Lionsgate’s highest grossing movie ever. Worldwide the film took $214 million, a particularly impressive figure considering Suzanne Collins’ books are barely known in many countries.

It’s a hugely impressive start and has stunned many who had assumed this sort of opening was impossible for a non-sequel, but the film film lit the imagine of young people, most particularly young women, who are becoming an increasingly important demographic, having been largely igrnoed by Hollywood for years.

The only other new entry in the US top 10 was October Baby, a film that’s aimed squarely at conservative Christian viewers and which has an anti-abortion message. It took $1.7 million to place eighth.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of 23rd-25th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Hunger Games $155.0 $155.0
2 21 Jump Street $21.3 $71.0
3 Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax $13.1 $177.3
4 John Carter $5.0 $62.3
5 Act Of Valor $2.0 $65.9
6 Project X $1.9 $51.7
7 A Thousand Words $1.9 $14.9

21 Jump Street Sequel Already In The Works

March 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jonah Hill must be feeling pretty pleased with himself today. It was his idea to turn the 80s TV show 21 Jump Street into a modern buddy cop comedy, which has turned out to be a great success.

Even before the weekend numbers were in, Sony seemed confident they had a hit, as Variety reports they’re already working on a sequel, with Hill once more producing and working on the story, and Michael Bacall writing the screenplay. Bacall worked on the first 21 Jump Street film, as well as Project X and Scott Pilgrim.

There’s no info on what the follow-up may be about, or when we might see it, although with the box office numbers for 21 Jump Street already racking up, Sony is likely to want to get it in cinemas as soon as possible!

At the moment it’s very early days, so it’s not known whether directing duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller will return, and it isn’t thought Channing Tatum is currently signed for sequel, so they’ll need to bring him onboard too.

21 Jump Street Tops The US Box Office

March 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Thanks to great reviews and strong word of mouth (as well as a lack of other major new openers), 21 Jump Street got off to a great start at the US box office with $35 million, which is one of the biggest openings ever for an R-rated comedy and Jonah Hill’s career best start.

If Disney had been hoping that John Carter would have long legs at the box office after a weak start, they’re going to be disappointed. The movie dropped 55% in its second outing to $15 million. The House Of Mouse is now going to have to cross its fingers that the international box office can make up for its weak US showing.

The only other new entry in the top 10 was Will Ferrell’s Spanish-language outing, Casa De Mi Padre. It opened on 382 screens, but only managed a relatively soft per-screen average, making $2.2 million. That would suggest it won’t see much of an expansion over the coming weeks.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of March 16th-18th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 21 Jump Street $35.0 $25.0

New Posters: 21 Jump Street

December 20, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

New posters have popped up online for some of next year’s movie, so take a look above and below for new shots from 21 Jump Street, Mirror Mirror and Cosmopolis.

Although 21 Jump Street is loosely based on the 1980s Johnny Depp TV series of the same name, it’s a far more comic take on concept. It sees Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as a pair of underachieving cops who are sent back to a local high school to blend in and bring down a drug ring. The poster above is fairly generic, but it ain’t bad. The film’s out March 16th. (Image via Moviefone)

The trailer for Mirror Mirror was pretty dreadful, but these two posters aren’t bad. Directed by Tarsem, the film is a comic take on the Snow White legend starring Lily Collins, Julia Roberts, Armie Hammer and Nathan Lane. It’s due to his cinemas on March 16th.

Finally, this rather brooding poster for Cosmopolis has appeared over at CosmopolisFilm.com. David Cronenberg’s take on Don De Lillo’s novel stars Robert Pattinson as young billionaire Eric Packer (Pattinson) who starts out just wanting to get a haircut, but as the day progresses, he must deal with the fallout from the decisions he’s made in his life. The film’s out in 2012.
