Emily VanCamp Takes Captain America 2 Female Lead

February 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Emily-VanCampOver the last few weeks it’s been known that Marvel has been on the lookout for the female lead of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Now the role has been cast and Deadline reports that Revenge star Emily VanCamp is in talks to play it.

It isn’t known what character VanCamp will play, although there is speculation that she may be Sharon Carter, the niece of Peggy Carter, who was portrayed by Hayley Atwell in Captain America: The First Avenger (Atwell won’t be back). In the comics, Sharon joined the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization, inspired by the stories she was told about her aunt and Captain America. Eventually, Sharon and Captain America ended up falling in love, although her work at S.H.I.E.L.D. put a strain on their relationship.

However this is all speculation at the moment and VanCamp could be playing somebody completely different.

The actress joins a cast that already includes Chris Evans as Captain America, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Anthony Mackie as Falcon, Frank Grillo as Crossbones, Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill, and Toby Jones as Arnim Zola. Anthony Russo and Joe Russo are directing from a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. It isn’t known when production will begin at this time.

Toby Jones Back For Captain America: The Winter Soldier

January 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Toby-JonesChris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, and Sebastian Stan are all set to return to the world of Captain America for The Winter Soldier, and now it appears at least one more actor from the first film will be back.

The Girl and Hunger Games star Toby Jones has said that he’s like to return to his role as Armin Zola, very briefly telling HeyUGuys, “It looks like I will be (returning), yeah.”

Unfortunately there’s no news on how he will fit into the plot. It will be interesting to see, as this adventure is set in the modern day, so either Zola is going to be very old or we’ll be getting some sort of flashback to the World War II setting on the first movie.

Avengers stars Scarlett Johansson and Cobie Smulders are also likely to return as The Black Widow and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill in The Winter Soldier. Anthony Mackie and Frank Grillo are new additions to the cast, portraying Falcon and Crossbones.

Anthony Russo and Joe Russo are directing from a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders & Scarlett Johannson On For Captain America 2

October 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Yesterday, it was confirmed that Frank Grillo will play Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Now there’s some more casting news, which lets us know some familiar faces will be back for the film, as Variety reports that The Avengers stars Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, and Cobie Smulders will reprise their roles for this stand-alone sequel.

Captain America: The First Avenger star Sebastian Stan will also be back as Bucky Barnes, who turns into The Winter Soldier. You may be wondering how that’s possible if you’ve seen the first movie, but his return in a new form is one of the main aspects of the plot.

It isn’t known how integral the return of the S.H.I.E.L.D agents will be, or indeed if with a S.H.I.E.L.D TV show be planned, they will try and tie the events in the movie into that series.

Marvel has also issued a casting call for actors in Los Angeles and Cleveland, for both principal and extra roles. Production begins March 1, 2013, with shooting to take place in Los Angeles, Cleveland, and Washington D.C.

Frank Grillo Confirmed As Crossbones In Captain America 2

October 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of weeks ago, rumours surface that The Grey and Warrior actor Frank Grillo was in the running for a role in Captain America 2, with speculation that he would play villain Crossbones. Now Variety has confirmed the news, and while many wondered if Crossbones would be the henchman to someone else, it appear he’s the key main villain in the movie.

The character started out in Marvel comics in 1989 as Brock Rumlow, the leader of the Savage Crims gang in New York. He later went on to serve as a henchman of Red Skull under the code name Crossbones (hence why some wondered whether he’d be the main bad guy in the film or not).

The actor joins Chris Evans and Samuel L. Jackson, who return as Steve Rogers and Nick Fury, along with Anthony Mackie as Falcon. Anthony Russo and Joe Russo are directing from a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Production will start next spring.

Emilia Clarke & Jessica Brown Findlay Eyed For Captain America 2

October 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Once production wraps on Thor 2 and Iron Man 3, they’re quickly moving on to Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Before then they need to get the new cast members sorted. Marvel and directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo are currently eyeing their leading lady, with Deadline reporting numerous actresses are testing for the role.

On the shortlist is Emilia Clarke (who’s worked with the Russos on Game of Thrones), Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey), Imogen Poots (Fright Night) and Alison Brie (Community). The character they would be playing has not been announced, but it will be a modern day love interest for Steve Rogers. Some suggest the female lead will be somehow related to Peggy Carter, and it’s interesting that as with Hayley Atwell in the first film, they’re mainly looking at English actresses for the part.

It is also being reported that Scarlett Johansson will be making a cameo as Black Widow in the movie, ensuring the continuation of the broad Marvel Universe. Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be released April 4th, 2014.

Anna Kendrick Leads Shortlist For Captain America 2 Female Lead

August 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Marvel Studios is gearing up for the superhero sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which goes into production after Thor: The Dark World wraps later this year. As a result, the studio is currently searching for the female lead, with Anna Kendrick (Up In The Air), Felicity Jones (Like Crazy), and Imogen Poots (Fright Night) considered the front runners, according to The New York Post.

It isn’t officially known which character one of these actresses might play, although the speculation is that it’ll be Sharon Carter, who’s the niece of Peggy Carter, played by Hayley Atwell in the first film, and who is the Cap’s love interest in The Winter Soldier comic book arc.

Chris Evans is slated to return as Steve Rogers/Captain America, with Anthony Mackie signing on earlier this month to star as The Falcon. Samuel L. Jackson is expected to return as Nick Fury, while Sebastian Stan be back as Bucky Barnes, who transforms into the title villain, The Winter Soldier.

Anthony Russo and Joe Russo are directing from a screenplay by Captain America: The First Avenger scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. It’s due for release on April 4th, 2014.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Adds Anthony Mackie As Falcon

July 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you need some solid support in a movie, Anthony Mackie is the go to guy at the moment, having popped up in films such as Adjustment Bureau, Real Steel, Man On A Ledge and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Now THR reports Mackie is in talks to play Sam Wilson, a.k.a. The Falcon, in the newly fully titled Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Falcon was first introduced in 1969 and is one of the first African-American superheroes (Marvel’s Black Panther debuted before Falcon, although he hailed from the fictional African country of Wakanda). The character’s power comes from a suit that gives him super strength and allows him to fly, along with the telepathic ability to communicate with birds. It’ll be interesting to see if this is an attempt to ignite interest in Falcon, so that Marvel can add him to their movie pantheon with his own films.

The new title also hints that Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes will be brought back to life as The Winter Soldier, with some reports suggesting Stan is already onboard.

Joe and Anthony Russo are directing from a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Shooting will commence after production wraps on Thor: The Dark World later this year.

Captain America & Thor Sequel Titles & Logos Revealed

July 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Marvel always goes big at Comic-Con and this year they certainly delivered, including revealing the titles for the sequels to Captain America and Thor, which will hit cinemas under the name Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Thor: The Dark World. Neither is exactly the most brilliant title we’ve ever heard, but they are suitably comic book-y.

The studio also released the title treatments for the films, which you can see above and below, as well as one for Iron Man 3. With that latter movie, Marvel also confirmed that Ben Kingsley will play the villainous Mandarin in the movie.

Thor: The Dark World hits cinemas November 8th, 2013, while Captain America: The Winter Soldier comes to theatres April 4th, 2014. Oh, and Iron Man 3 will be before both of those, on May 3rd, 2013.

Russo Brothers In Talks To Direct Captain America 2

June 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With Joe Johnston having moved on, it’s been revealed that Anthony Russo and Joe Russo are in final talks to direct Captain America 2 for Marvel, according to THR. Back in March the brothers were considered top contenders for the directorial job, along with F. Gary Gray and George Nolfi, but now they’ve got the job.

The Russo’s only have two features under their belts, neither of which are exactly big budget, effects filled flicks. They’ve made the comedies Welcome To Collinwood and You, Me and Dupree. They are best known for their work on the small screen, producing and directing episodes of Community, Happy Endings, and Arrested Development.

Captain America: The First Avenger scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have written the sequel screenplay. Chris Evans will be back as the title character, with Samuel L. Jackson returning as Nick Fury. No other cast members have been confirmed yet.

Shooting is set to commence after Marvel wraps on Thor 2 later this year, for release April 4th, 2014.

Captain America 2 Set For April 2014

April 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Marvel’s interconnected universe of superheroes doesn’t end with The Avengers. In fact it’s only the beginning, as Iron Man 3 is already set for May 3rd, 2013, then on November 15th, 2013 it’s time for Thor 2. Now Marvel has announced that April 4th, 2014 is the day we’ll be getting Captain America 2.

Marvel/Disney issued a brief press release, saying, ‘The Walt Disney Studios has announced a release date for Marvel Studios’ sequel to the blockbuster Captain America: The First Avenger on April 4, 2014. The second installment will pick-up where the highly anticipated Marvel’s The Avengers (May 4, 2012) leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world.’

It would appear therefore that we can expect both Chris Evans and Samuel L. Jackson in the movie, and with the likes of Cobie Smulders (who plays S.H.I.E.L.D’s Maria Hill in Avengers Assembled) having signed lengthy contracts covering a lot of Marvel movies, we can probably expect more continuing characters too.

Incidentally there’s still a May 16th, 2014, release date held aside for another Marvel movie, although as yet it’s not been been announced what it will be.
