J. Edgar is a movie that’s perhaps better off on DVD and Blu-ray than it was in cinemas. The reason for that is that it’s a rather narratively complex beast and so takes at least a couple of viewing to properly unravel. Its problem is that the first viewing is likely to seem rather dull to many, so they’re less likely to want to revisit it.
Leonardo DiCaprio plays J. Edgar Hoover, who for nearly half a century oversaw the FBI from when it was a fledgling organisation, though the depression and era of the gangster, onto the red scare and beyond. The film sees Hoover as an old man dictating his memoirs, while in flashback we see his earlier days and how he quickly climbed to the top of the Bureau Of Investigation (as it was initially known) and used the likes of the Lindbergh Baby kidnapping to increase the power of the organisation. The movie awards season is open, with the first gongs being handed out as the film industry starts the long run-up to the Oscars in February. LGBT films are already off to a great start, with the 21st annual Gotham Independent Awards making the surprise choice of handing the Best Picture award to Beginners, in a tie with The Tree Of Life.
The question this weekend wasn’t whether Twilight: Breaking Dawn would have a good opening, it was just how big it would be. That question has now been answered with the latest in the series taking $139 million in its first three days in the US, and $283.5 million around the world. It’s the fifth biggest North American opening in history, but didn’t quite take the franchise record, which is still held by New Moon’s $142.8 million. It also scored the third biggest opening day gross ever, after the final Harry Potter and New Moon, taking $72 million in America on Friday.
Despite some rather stinging reviews, Immortals has gotten off to a pretty good start at the US box office with $32 million dollars. That may not be as much as the likes of 300 and Clash of The Titans, but still marks the biggest opening for a film not released by one of the six major studios since The Expendables.
