Kick-Ass 2 (DVD)

December 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Chloe Moretz, Jim Carrey, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Aaron Taylor-Johnson
Director: Jeff Wadlow
Running Time: 103 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 9th 2013

2010’s Kick-Ass gained a lot of fans who loved its blend of heart, humour and over-the-top comic book violence. Now we get the follow-up, which sees Jeff Wadlow take over from Matthew Vaughn in the director’s chair. While it’s an okay effort, it’s difficult not to wish Vaughn had stuck around.

Picking up some time after the first movie, Dave Lizewski (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) has left his Kick-Ass superhero alter-ego behind and is now attending high school along Mindy McCready (Chloe Moretz), the former Hit Girl. While they may not be trying to fight the bad guys, Kick-Ass has inspired others to take up the costumed vigilante cause. [Read more…]

The Butler Tops The US Box Office Again, Beating Mortal Instruments & The World’s End

August 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

butler-poster1Despite what many had thought would be some strong competition, in the end The Butler topped the US box office for a second week with $17 million, with We’re The Millers coming second once more with $13.5 million.

That was enough to beat newcomer The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones, which despite suggestion early on its marketing that it was on track to be the new Twilight (and resulted in a sequel already being in the works), took $9.3 million over the weekend and $14 million since it opened last Wednesday. As young adult adaptations tend to be quite front loaded and then drop off, it doesn’t suggest this will become a hit in the long run (and certainly doesn’t bode well for the sequel).

The World’s End came in at number 4 on its US debut with $8.94 million. That’s more than either Hot Fuzz or Shaun Of The Dead, although those film got more limited releases. It’s not too bad though, especially as few expected it to do that brilliantly in America.

The horror film You’re Next took seventh spot on the chart with $7 million. It’s one of the weakest starts of the year for a nationwide horror release, but as it cost little to make, it’ll probably still end up turning a profit.

Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine expanded onto more screens in its fifth weekend at cinemas and made its first appearance in the top 10 with $4.3 million. It continues Allen’s run of decent earners after years when his movies barely made a cent.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for weekend of August 23rd-25th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Lee Daniels’ The Butler $17.0 $52.2
2 We’re The Millers $13.5 $91.7
3 The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones $9.3 $14.0
4 The World’s End $8.9 $8.9
5 Planes $8.5 $59.5
6 Elysium $7.1 $69.0
7 You’re Next $7.0 $7.0

The Butler Tops The US Box Office, With Kick-Ass 2 Faltering

August 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

butler-poster1Going into the weekend, most box office watchers were predicting that Kick-Ass 2 would win the weekend, with Lee Daniels’ The Butler coming second. In the end The Butler did better than expected and took the top spot, with Kick-Ass 2 faltering and only managing fourth place on the chart.

The Butler took $25 million to take the top spot, about on par with The Help, which opened August 2011. It did a lot better than expected, with Hollywood once more underestimating the African American audience, who turned out in large numbers to support the civil rights themed movie. With good word of mouth building, some are saying it could end up taking $100 million.

Kick-Ass 2 ended up fourth with a comparatively dismal $13.5 million, about half what some had expected and six million below the first film’s opening weekend take. However the Kick-Ass only really became a hit on DVD, so the sequel will now have to hope it can do the same.

The only other new movie in the top 10 is Jobs, which took $6.7 million. It’s not a great start but about in line with expectations. It seems that mixed reviews didn’t help a movie that never managed to really sell why you should want to see a film about Steve Jobs.

At least it did better than Paranoia, as despite the presence of Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman and Liam Hemsworth, it only took $3.5 million for a 13th place finish. Many expect it to become the lowest grossing movie Ford’s ever starred in.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of August 16th-18th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Lee Daniels’ The Butler $25.0 $25.0
2 We’re The Millers $17,7 $69.5
3 Elysium $13.6 $55.9
4 Kick-Ass 2 $13.5 $13.5
5 Planes $13.1 $45.0
6 Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters $8.3 $38.9
7 Jobs $6.7 $6.7
8 2 Guns $5.5 $59.2
9 The Smurfs 2 $4.6 $56.9
10 The Wolverine $4.4 $120.4

New Kick-Ass 2 Character Pics Take A Look At Aaron Taylor-Johnson & More

August 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kick-ass-2-character-pic1 Kick-Ass 2 hits UK cinemas on August 14th (and the 16th in the US), and so ahead of that Universal has revealed a septet of character images, giving us an up-close look at Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Night Bitch, as well as villains The Motherf*ucker, Black Death, Genghis Carnage and Mother Russia.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When we last saw junior assassin Hit Girl and young vigilante Kick-Ass, they were trying to live as normal teenagers Mindy and Dave.  With graduation looming and uncertain what to do, Dave decides to start the world’s first superhero team with Mindy.  Unfortunately, when Mindy is busted for sneaking out as Hit Girl, she’s forced to retire—leaving her to navigate the terrifying world of high-school mean girls on her own.  With no one left to turn to, Dave joins forces with Justice Forever, run by a born-again ex-mobster named Colonel Stars and Stripes.

‘Just as they start to make a real difference on the streets,  the world’s first super villain, The Mother F%&*^r, assembles his own evil league and puts a plan in motion to make Kick-Ass and Hit Girl pay for what they did to his dad.  But there’s only one problem with his scheme: If you mess with one member of Justice Forever, you mess with them all.’

Kick-Ass 2 Extended Red-Band Trailer – Aaron Taylor Johnson & Chloe Moretz are back

July 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I think it’s safe to say that they haven’t decided to sanitise Kick-Ass 2 to get a lower rating, as this new extended red-band trailer – released to coincide with the film’s appearance at Comic-Con – is certainly keen to show that the language and violence is very much intact. And it’s also looking a whole lot of fun.

It also gives us out best look yet at Jim Carrey’s Colonel Stars & Stripes, as well as Christoph Mintz-Plasse’s return as the rather S&M The Motherf**ka.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to 2010’s irreverent global hit: Kick-Ass 2.  After Kick-Ass’ (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol.  When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation.

Two More Kick-Ass 2 Character Posters Arrive – Kick-Ass and The Motherf**ker

April 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kick-ass-2-character-poster9
Last week we had character posters for Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz) and Colonel Stars & Stripes (Jim Carrey), and now it’s the turn of Kick-Ass himself (Aaron Johnson) and the evil The Motherf**ker (Christopher Mintz-Plasse).

New Kick-Ass 2 Character Posters Revealed

March 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A great new international trailer for Kick-Ass 2 arrived yesterday, and now to back that up, two new character posters have been released, featuring Colonel Stars and Stripes poster (Jim Carrey) and Hit-Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz).

Kick-Ass 2 International Trailer – More fun from the masked vigilantes

March 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The recently released US trailer for Kick-Ass 2 concentrated on the manic action and masked vigilante insanity of the movie, but this new UK promo is a little quieter, with a bit more plot and a bigger emphasis on Hit Girl’s story in the film, where she has to deal with trying to be a normal teen, despite having been brought up an ass-kicking superhero.
