Blue Jasmine (Blu-ray)

February 16, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Cate Blanchett, Sally Hawkins, Alex Baldwin, Andrew Dice Clay, Bobby Cannavale
Director: Woody Allen
Running Time: 98 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: February 17th 2014

A couple of weeks ago Cate Blanchett looked like a shoe-in for the Best Actress Oscar, although that’s been thrown in the air in the fallout from Dylan Farrow’s renewed accusations against Woody Allen, which specifically called out Blanchett for working with him. However while the Allen issues are troubling, Cate’s performance is magnificent and deserving of an Academy Award.

She is the Jasmine of the title (who’s actually Jeanette, but has renamed herself) who is newly arrived in San Francisco to stay with her sister, Ginger (Sally Hawkins). She’s not there because she wants to be, but because following her husband’s (Alex Baldwin) imprisonment for fraud and subsequent suicide, the government has taken every penny she had. [Read more…]

The Butler Tops The US Box Office Again, Beating Mortal Instruments & The World’s End

August 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

butler-poster1Despite what many had thought would be some strong competition, in the end The Butler topped the US box office for a second week with $17 million, with We’re The Millers coming second once more with $13.5 million.

That was enough to beat newcomer The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones, which despite suggestion early on its marketing that it was on track to be the new Twilight (and resulted in a sequel already being in the works), took $9.3 million over the weekend and $14 million since it opened last Wednesday. As young adult adaptations tend to be quite front loaded and then drop off, it doesn’t suggest this will become a hit in the long run (and certainly doesn’t bode well for the sequel).

The World’s End came in at number 4 on its US debut with $8.94 million. That’s more than either Hot Fuzz or Shaun Of The Dead, although those film got more limited releases. It’s not too bad though, especially as few expected it to do that brilliantly in America.

The horror film You’re Next took seventh spot on the chart with $7 million. It’s one of the weakest starts of the year for a nationwide horror release, but as it cost little to make, it’ll probably still end up turning a profit.

Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine expanded onto more screens in its fifth weekend at cinemas and made its first appearance in the top 10 with $4.3 million. It continues Allen’s run of decent earners after years when his movies barely made a cent.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for weekend of August 23rd-25th.

1 Lee Daniels’ The Butler $17.0 $52.2
2 We’re The Millers $13.5 $91.7

4 The World’s End $8.9 $8.9

7 You’re Next $7.0 $7.0

Blue Jasmine Trailer – First look at Cate Blanchett in Woody Allen’s latest

June 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As is the way with Woody Allen movies, we’ve heard little about the plot of Blue Jasmine, meaning that trailer is our first proper chance to see what the movie is all about.

The only earlier info was that it follows ‘the final stages of an acute crisis and a life of a fashionable New York housewife (Cate Blanchett)’. The actress’ character, Jasmine, is used to wealth and privilege, thanks to her husband (Alec Baldwin). However, when everything falls apart and Jasmine starts to have a nervous breakdown, she moves to San Francisco where she can stay with her sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins).

Louis C.K., Bobby Cannavale, Andrew Dice Clay, Peter Sarsgaard and Michael Stuhlbarg also star. It hits US cinemas on July 26th, with a September 20th UK date seblue-jasmine-poster1t. [Read more…]
