Rocketman Trailer – Taron Egerton is a fantastical version of a young Elton John

October 2, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Director Dexter Fletcher has certainly thrown himself into biopic of gay music legends recently, even if it was partially by accident. He ended up taking over direction of the Queen/Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, and he’s also behind the lens for the long-gestating fantastical look at a young Elton John, Rocketman.

Here’s the brief synopsis: #ROCKETMAN is an epic musical fantasy about the uncensored human story of Sir Elton John’s breakthrough years, starring Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell, Richard Madden and Bryce Dallas Howard.’ As you’d expect from Elton, this is not your typical biopic, with the whole thing taking place in a larger than life universe.

The film’s due in cinemas May 2019. Take a look at the first teaser trailer for the movie below. [Read more…]

Taron Egerton Set To Play Elton John In Rocketman Biopic

April 22, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For the past few years Elton John and his hubby David Furnish have been working on a musical movie biopic of the singer’s life. Initially they had Ton Hardy on board for the central, but now he’s out and Taron Egerton is in, according to Variety.

John must have been impressed by the young star when they worked together on Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

There’s also been a change in the directors chair, with Dexter Fletcher (who’s just replaced Bryan Singer on the Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody) taking over from the previously attached Michael Gracey. It’s previously been reported that Lee Hall’s script will follow Elton John’s journey from 5-year old musical prodigy who by age 11 won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, to a young man who rebelled against his strict upbringing, wore outrageous costumes and became a global icon who teamed with songwriter Bernie Taupin to sell more records that just about any musical artist of his era. It will also feature some fantastical elements and plenty of the singer’s music, in keeping with John’s larger than life personality. It’ll shoot this summer.

Tom Hardy Is Looking Cute On The Arm Of Elton John As They Sell Rocketman Biopic

November 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

elton-john-tom-hardy
I hope David Furnish isn’t the jealous type, as Tom Hardy and Elton John have hooked up on the eve of the American Film Market, and we have to say they make a surprisingly cute couple.

When we say ‘hooked up’, we do of course mean that they teamed up to meet potentials buyers of the upcoming Elton biopic, Rocketman, which Tom signed up to star in last week. With AFM kicking off tomorrow, Tom and Elton headed to Santa Monica to help sell the movie.

To be honest, we’re not noticing too much of a resemblance between the two, so it’ll be interesting to see what sort of transformation Tom has to go under to becoming a younger version of Elton. Or perhaps he’s just gonna be hot Elton, as he’s certainly looking good here!

Michael Gracey will direct Rocketman from a screenplay by Lee Hall. It’s previously been reported that the movie will follow Elton John’s journey from 5-year old musical prodigy who by age 11 won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, to a young man who rebelled against his strict upbringing, wore outrageous costumes and became a global icon who teamed with songwriter Bernie Taupin to sell more records that just about any musical artist of his era. It will also feature some fantastical elements and plenty of the singer’s music, in keeping with John’s larger than life personality. It’ll shoot next year.

Tom Hardy Confirmed For Elton John Biopic, Rocketman

October 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tom Hardy in WarriorBack in May, Tom Hardy was rumoured to be circling the lead in the planned biopic of Elton John, Rocketman. Now ScreenDaily confirms the news, as Focus Features has just picked up the movie and says that Hardy is indeed set to star.

Michael Gracey will direct from a screenplay by Lee Hall. It will also feature some more fantastical elements and plenty of the singer’s music, in keeping with John’s larger than life personality.

Steve Hamilton Shaw of Elton’s Rocket Pictures comments, “Tom is a stellar talent who will add extraordinary depth and nuance in bringing Elton’s story to life,” said Shaw. “We are excited to have such a gifted actor on board, and equally excited to be in the hands of Peter Schlessel and the entire Focus Features team.”

Hardy is certainly an interesting choice, and hopefully it’ll allow him to show off the more playful slightly camp side that’s sometimes on display in interviews, rather than the hard man we normally see on screen.

The film will shoot during autumn 2014.

FilmNation & Icon Sign Up To Back Elton John Biopic Rocketman

June 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Elton-JohnA few days ago we reported that Tom Hardy was being eyed to play the lead role in the Elton John biopic, Rocketman. While there’s still no news on whether he’ll take the role, the film has moved a little further towards the big screen, as Empire reports that FilmDistrict has signed up to distribute the film in the US. That comes hot on the heels of a Cannes deal, where Icon’s production arm AI agreed to co-finance the movie.

It’s still early days though, so don’t expect it for a while yet. When it does appear though it should follow Elton’s journey from 5-year old musical prodigy who by age 11 won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, to a young man who rebelled against his strict upbringing, wore outrageous costumes and became a global icon who teamed with songwriter Bernie Taupin to sell more records that just about any musical artist of his era. It will also feature some more fantastical elements and plenty of the singer’s music, in keeping with John’s larger than life personality.

Music video helmer Michael Gracey is set to direct. Hopefully it won’t take too much longer until it goes in front of the cameras.

Elton John Biopic, Rocketman, Gets Director Michael Gracey

March 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Elton-JohnFor the last year or so, Elton John and David Furnish have been working a biopic of the music star called Rocketman. Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) has been working on the script, and now they’ve found a director, in the form of commercials and FX man Michael Gracey.

Deadline reports that the film, ‘follows John’s journey from 5-year old musical prodigy who by age 11 won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, to a young man who rebelled against his strict upbringing, wore outrageous costumes and became a global icon who teamed with songwriter Bernie Taupin to sell more records that just about any musical artist of his era’. It’s previously been said it will also include some more fantastical elements and plenty of the singer’s music, in keeping with John’s larger than life personality.

It will be Gracey’s first film as a director (unless he makes The Greatest Showman On Earth with Hugh Jackman first, which he’s also attached to), although he’s well known for both his work in visual effects and for his commercials, which often feature elaborate dance routines, making him a good choice for Rocketman.

The director commented “Everyone knows and loves Elton John’s music, but the true story of his life is so incredible that it can only be described as a fantasy. His journey from impossible dreamer to stardom and uncontrollable excess is something only a musical film can capture, and I’m so excited to be the one to tell his story.”

Casting is already underway to find someone to play Elton has a child (when he was simply Reg Dwight), and there’s no word on who might play him as an adult. Previous rumours suggested Justin Timberlake might take the role, but that was revealed to be more speculation than fact.

Elton John Wants Justin Timberlake To Play Him In Biopic

January 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Several months ago it was revealed that Elton John was working on a film biopic of his life and had hired Billy Elliot screenwriter Lee Hall to come up with the script. Not much has been heard about it since then, but now the 64-year-old singer has been talking to the LA Times and confirmed the project is still very much in the works.

Elton has confirmed that he’ll co-produce the film with his civil partner, David Furnish, and that it’ll be a, “surreal look at my life, and not just a factual look at my life, more in the manner of a Moulin Rouge”. The singer, who’s never been averse to a bit of flamboyance, added that a “normal biopic” would be innappropriate “because my life hasn’t been like that”.

It’ll be interesting to see how the film handles his getting married, divorced and then coming out – espeically if it’ll all going to be done in a surreal, ott fashion.

Elton’s also talke about who he’d like to play him in the movie, saying, “I’ve got a wish list of people. Number one on my wishlist is Justin Timberlake, because he played me before in a David LaChapelle video of Rocket Man and he was superb.” Whether Timberlake would have any interest in the role isn’t known, but Elton is good at getting what he wants, so don’t be surprised if it turns out Justin will play him.

A director is attached to the film, although it isn’t known who it is. It’s believed the singer initially wanted Moulin Rouge helmer Baz Luhrmann to direct, but on that occassion he didn’t get his way, as Baz is too busy working on his 3D version of The Great Gatsby. At the moment there’s no info on when the movie might actually shoot.
